Port Cities, Migration, and Control, 1890–1930 Port cities were gateways of globalization and nodes of mobility, particularly in the late 19th century. Several million migrants crossed ports like Hamburg on their way into the New World, contributing substantially to the rise of several shipping companies. Due to fears of migration and hygienic conceptions, port city councils enacted a strict regime of control, keeping certain ethnic groups like Eastern Jews and Chinese migrants under intense scrutiny. The article sketches and compares some cases of maritime migration control in Western Europe, North America, and Australia. Shipping and port cities, connecting the world, could be targeted as a threat of potential invasion in the western hemisphere

Perceptions and practices of rural Indian women in contraception, abortion, and sexual health: a cross sectional study

Background: Maternal mortality is an important target of health care policies, especially in India. While numerical indicators of maternal health improve, this can only be sustained with change in the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of women. Gender empowerment is a neglected aspect of health care policy, and there is a need to assess the perceptions of Indian women, the true torch-bearers of change. Methods: This was a hospital based cross sectional quasi-quantitative study in a sub-district hospital in the town of Ballabgarh, Haryana, India. Married women attending the outpatient clinic, antenatal clinic, labor ward, and primary health centres in the age group of 20 to 40 years were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire with both closed and open-ended questions. Health concerns were concurrently addressed. Results: Author interviewed 956 women. No form of modern contraception had ever been used by 58.36% of the women. Intra-uterine contraceptive devices were discontinued by 76.12% of the women who had used them. Emergency contraception was a concept known to 49.89% of the women, but fraught with misconceptions. Induced abortions was being used as a form of family planning, with nearly 90% of the women having taken over-the-counter abortifacients. Women were receptive to contraception, and many expressed an interest in long acting contraceptives other than IUCDs.Conclusions: This study provides insight into the thinking of Indian women regarding family planning. This may help guide family planning policies

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of communication on employee work productivity at the Pekanbaru Smart Fast Global Education Institute. The sample in this study were 34 employees of the Smart Fast Global Education Pekanbaru Institute. Analysis of the data used is the validity test, reliability test, normality test simple linear regression, coefficient of determination test and T test. The results of the research are the effect of communication on employee work productivity at the Smart Fast Global Education Pekanbaru Institute which has a significant effect with a determination coefficient value R2 of 0.398 . This means that the work productivity variable (Y) is influenced by the communication variable (X) by 39.8%, while the remaining 60.2% is explained by other factors not examined by the authors. The communication variable (X) has a positive influence on work productivity (Y) with a regression coefficient of 0.790 indicating that if communication increases by 1 unit, the employee productivity variable will increase by 0.311, which means that the higher the communication, the higher the work productivity. The results of the hypothesis test show that the value of t count > t table (4.604 > 1.693) with sig 0.000 < sig 0.05 which means Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. So it can be concluded that communication has a significant effect on employee work productivity at the Smart Fast Global Education Institute

    Hafenstädte in globaler Perspektive.: Einleitung

Port Cities in Global Perspective: An Introduction This volume examines the phenomena of mobility and migration in port cities at the height of the steamship era, ca. 1860-1930. The inherent contradiction that ports were the source of a city’s (or a country’s or an Empire’s) esteem in the world on the one hand and that on the other, the ports’ unwanted and uncontrollable processes prompted negative reactions, is the common thread of all articles. Our approach to the study of port cities focuses on the contact in ports between people of different origin. This contact situation has the potential to put into question one’s concept of the city, the nation, the religious community, civilization, or even time. By consequence, it can threaten existing power structures and has the capacity to alter or reaffirm urban and national identities

The Impact of Multistability on Hysteresis Arising in Linear and Nonlinear Systems

Hysteresis is typically depicted as a looping behaviour in a system's input-output graph. This looping behaviour relates to multiple stable equilibria (that is, multi-stability) in the system. This work examines some necessary stability conditions for linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations to exhibit hysteresis. Examples and simulations are presented supporting this. Additionally, the shape of hysteresis loops due to different types of multi-stability (e.g. continuum of equilibria or isolated equilibria) are described.Comment: 33 pages, 38 figures, submitted for peer revie

Kata kunci: Penelitian korelasi, Kemampuan pemahaman bacaan, Kemampuan menulis / This research was aimed to find out whether there was any significant correlation between seventh-grade students’ reading comprehension and their writing ability at SMPN 102 Jakarta. This research used the descriptive correlation method. To achieve the research objective, the reading comprehension test and descriptive writing test have been given to 100 students. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive and inferential using statistical analysis and non-parametric statistical analysis through SPSS 26 version. The results of this research concluded that H_0 was accepted and H_a was rejected. It can be concluded that there was no significant correlation between students’ reading comprehension and their writing ability, yet a negative and very weak correlation was found. It can be seen from the result of Spearman Product Moment Correlations between both variables (r = -0.107, ρ = 0.291 > Sig. 0.05). In other words, other factors were more influential towards the students' writing ability besides their reading comprehension at SMPN 102 Jakarta, which further studies were needed.
