Role of Plasma Surface Treatments on Wetting and Adhesion

    No full text
There are many current and emerging wetting and adhesion issues which require an additional surface processing to enhance interfacial surface properties. Materials which are non-polar, such as polymers, have low surface energy and therefore typically require surface treatment to promote wetting of inks and coating. One way of increasing surface energy and reactivity is to bombard a polymer surface with atmospheric plasma. When the ionized gas is discharged on the polymer, effects of ablation, crosslinking and activation are produced on its surface. In this paper we will analyse the role of plasma and its use in increasing the surface energy to achieve wettability and improve adhesion of polymeric surface

Electric Momentum: Dynamics of Transportation Electrification and Stories from the Road

The climate is undeniably changing. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published yet another report this year outlining how extreme weather, brought on by our use of Earth\u27s resources, causes loss of nature and human life around the world. The summer of 2023 broke records for high ocean temperatures and melting polar ice, and abnormally potent floods and fires touched all corners of the Earth. Industrial production of goods, and the personal choices that purchase them, are responsible for massive amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG), including carbon dioxide and methane. GHG emissions thicken the Earth\u27s atmosphere and continue the destabilization of the climate. It\u27s an all-encompassing phenomenon that asks us to reevaluate our relationship with the world: how we extract, consume, and dispose of renewable and non-renewable resources. The United States ranks second in the world for GHG emissions. Transportation is the most significant GHG-emitting sector of the US economy. Passenger vehicles contribute more than half of all transportation emissions. Electric vehicles may be one useful solution to reducing GHG emissions in this country. Rural schools and households have a unique opportunity to benefit from transportation electrification, if government subsidies and public charging infrastructure is in place. This portfolio of journalistic work explores the dynamics of emerging EV technology and to what extent the efficiency and reliability of these vehicles may reduce our climate impacts

The time course of attentional and oculomotor capture reveals a common cause

    Get PDF
Eye movements are often misdirected toward a distractor when it appears abruptly, an effect known as oculomotor capture. Fundamental differences between eye movements and attention have led to questions about the relationship of oculomotor capture to the more general effect of sudden onsets on performance, known as attentional capture. This study explores that issue by examining the time course of eye movements and manual localization responses to targets in the presence of sudden-onset distractors. The results demonstrate that for both response types, the proportion of trials on which responses are erroneously directed to sudden onsets reflects the quality of information about the visual display at a given point in time. Oculomotor capture appears to be a specific instance of a more general attentional capture effect. Differences and similarities between the two types of capture can be explained by the critical idea that the quality of information about a visual display changes over time and that different response systems tend to access this information at different moments in time

Data for the paper on "Early school failure predicts teenage pregnancy and marriage: a large population-based cohort study in Northern Malawi"

    Get PDF
The data originate from a demographic surveillance site (DSS) in Karonga district in northern Malawi covering a population of >35,000 individuals from approx. 8000 households since 2002. This is run by MEIRU (Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit). Annual individual and household-level socio-demographic and schooling data were combined with data on participants’ sexual behaviour, including age at sexual debut, pregnancy and marriage to examine the relationship between school progression (drop-out and age-for-grade) and sexual debut, pregnancy and marriage

Analysis of Chemical Laboratory Management at SMAN 55 Jakarta

An understanding of laboratory management is highly important to be owned by parties related to the laboratory, both directly and indirectly. Laboratories must be managed and utilized properly, because chemical laboratories are one type of laboratory that is considered quite dangerous in the context of carrying out education, research, and / or community service. This study aims to describe the management of a chemical laboratory using qualitative descriptive research methods. Research subjects were the principal, vice chairman of the curriculum, chair of the laboratory, and teachers in the field of chemistry studies. Data collection techniques are observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the research are: 1) Planning of chemical laboratory work program has been prepared and standardized by the head of the laboratory, 2) Organizing the laboratory structurally already exists, 3) Organizing by the principal involving all those involved in laboratory management, 4) The implementation of the program is suitable with the plan of the work program, 5) Supervision and evaluation of the principal must still be carried out intensively. In other words, laboratory management at SMA 55 Jakarta has been well organized

There have been many who, encouraged by the Horace’s well known words ut pictura poesis, initiated a comparison between painting and poetry. This article intends to discover how painting and poetry suggest the movement sensation, how they translate it to their own way of expression. In order to do this, we will analyze the different ways in which the image has been built in painting and poetry to lead us to this notion of displacement. We will begin with some previous examples to reach and focus on Twentieth century, where the variety of the proposals got highly increased and enriched in both mediums
