Correlates of eye colour and pattern in mantellid frogs
With more than 250 species, the Mantellidae is the most species-rich family of frogs in Madagascar. These frogs are highly diversified in morphology, ecology and natural history. Based on a molecular phylogeny of 248 mantellids, we here examine the distribution of three characters reflecting the diversity of eye colouration and two characters of head colouration along the mantellid tree, and their correlation with the general ecology and habitat use of these frogs. We use Bayesian stochastic character mapping, character association tests and concentrated changes tests of correlated evolution of these variables. We confirm previously formulated hypotheses of eye colour pattern being significantly correlated with ecology and habits, with three main character associations: many tree frogs of the genus Boophis have a bright coloured iris, often with annular elements and a blue-coloured iris periphery (sclera); terrestrial leaf-litter dwellers have an iris horizontally divided into an upper light and lower dark part; and diurnal, terrestrial and aposematic Mantella frogs have a uniformly black iris. Furthermore, the presence of a frenal streak and a dark tympanic patch were associated with each other, with horizontally divided iris colour, and with terrestrial habits. Our study is restricted to the mantellid radiation, and the performed tests detect the simultaneous distribution of independent character states in a tree, rather than providing a measure for phylogenetic independent correlation of these character states. The concentrated changes tests suggest that the evolutionary origin of a bright iris might indeed be correlated to arboreal habits. Yet, rather than testing hypotheses of adaptive evolution of eye colour in anurans, our study serves to formulate hypotheses of convergence more precisely and thus to open perspectives for their further testing in a comparative framework along the anuran tree of life. For instance, a brightly coloured iris and sclera might serve mate recognition or as aposematic defensive strategy especially in tree frogs, and a horizontally divided iris colour might constitute a disruptive defensive strategy in frogs inhabiting the leaf litter stratum
Effect of Solution Concentration and Anodizing Coating Time on Hardness and Thickness Coating Of 7075-O Aluminum Alloy
One of the materials used in ship propellers is aluminum alloy. The advantages of aluminum are that it is easy to cast and relatively resistant to corrosion. This research aims to determine the effect of heat treatment and the effect of variations in the concentration of H2SO4 and immersion time in optimal of the anodizing process on the hardness value of 7075-O aluminum alloy (as-cast aluminum alloy). The method used is solution heat treatment at a temperature of 490ºC with a holding time of 6 hours, quenching using water or oil, with artificial aging at a temperature of 120ºC with a holding time of 24 hours. In the anodizing process, a sulfuric acid solution with various concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% with variations in immersion time of 10, 15, and 20 minutes. The results of vickers hardness test on heat-treated specimens with water quenching accompanied by artificial aging is 137.54 HV, it is increased by 47.44%. While the results of the vickers hardness test after anodizing is 213.09 HV, it is increased by 128.42%. Where the optimum hardness value was achieved at a concentration of 15% H2SO4 and an immersion time of 20 minutes. The coating thickness is equal to 25.79 µm
Evidence of tail autotomy in the European plethodontid Hydromantes (Atylodes) genei (Temmick and Schlegel, 1838) (Amphibia: Urodela: Plethodontidae)
Caudal autotomy is a defensive mechanism widely adopted by lungless salamanders (Plethodontidae) from the New World. In contrast, in Europe, this mechanism was not described until very recently for just one Sardinian species, Hydromantes (Speleomantes) sarrabusensis. We report on tail autotomy observed in another species from the same island, Hydromantes (Atylodes) genei. In Europe, self-amputation of the tail seems to be restricted to some plethodontids inhabiting Sardinia, while continental species do not exhibit analogous antipredator strategies
Transcriptomic and macroevolutionary evidence for phenotypic uncoupling between frog life history phases

Nature Communications. 2017;8(1): 15213.Anuran amphibians undergo major morphological transitions during development, but the contribution of their markedly different life-history phases to macroevolution has rarely been analysed. Here we generate testable predictions for coupling versus uncoupling of phenotypic evolution of tadpole and adult life-history phases, and for the underlying expression of genes related to morphological feature formation. We test these predictions by combining evidence from gene expression in two distantly related frogs, Xenopus laevis and Mantidactylus betsi-leanus, with patterns of morphological evolution in the entire radiation of Madagascan mantellid frogs. Genes linked to morphological structure formation are expressed in a highly phase-specific pattern, suggesting uncoupling of phenotypic evolution across life-history phases. This gene expression pattern agrees with uncoupled rates of trait evolution among life-history phases in the mantellids, which we show to have undergone an adaptive radiation. Our results validate a prevalence of uncoupling in the evolution of tadpole and adult phenotypes of frogs
Transapical mitral valve implantation for treatment of symptomatic mitral valve disease: a real-world multicentre experience.
AIMS
Transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) is a new treatment option for patients with symptomatic mitral valve (MV) disease. Real-world data have not yet been reported. This study aimed to assess procedural and 30-day outcomes of TMVI in a real-world patient cohort.
METHOD AND RESULTS
All consecutive patients undergoing implantation of a transapically delivered self-expanding valve at 26 European centres from January 2020 to April 2021 were included in this retrospective observational registry. Among 108 surgical high-risk patients included (43% female, mean age 75 ± 7 years, mean STS-PROM 7.2 ± 5.3%), 25% was treated for an off-label indication (e.g. previous MV intervention or surgery, mitral stenosis, mitral annular calcification). Patients were highly symptomatic (New York Heart Association [NYHA] functional class III/IV in 86%) and mitral regurgitation (MR) was graded 3+/4+ in 95% (38% primary, 37% secondary, and 25% mixed aetiology). Technical success rate was 96%, and MR reduction to ≤1+ was achieved in all patients with successful implantation. There were two procedural deaths and 30-day all-cause mortality was 12%. At early clinical follow-up, MR reduction was sustained and there were significant reductions of pulmonary pressure (systolic pulmonary artery pressure 52 vs. 42 mmHg, p < 0.001), and tricuspid regurgitation severity (p = 0.013). Heart failure symptoms improved significantly (73% in NYHA class I/II, p < 0.001). Procedural success rate according to MVARC criteria was 80% and was not different in patients treated for an off-label indication (74% vs. 81% for off- vs. on-label, p = 0.41).
CONCLUSION
In a real-world patient population, TMVI has a high technical and procedural success rate with efficient and durable MR reduction and symptomatic improvement
Predictors of pulmonary failure following severe trauma: a trauma registry-based analysis
Background: The incidence of pulmonary failure in trauma patients is considered to be influenced by several factors such as liver injury. We intended to assess the association of various potential predictors of pulmonary failure following thoracic trauma and liver injury.
Methods: Records of 12,585 trauma patients documented in the TraumaRegister DGU® of the German Trauma Society were analyzed regarding the potential impact of concomitant liver injury on the incidence of pulmonary failure using uni- and multivariate analyses. Pulmonary failure was defined as pulmonary failure of ≥ 3 SOFA-score points for at least two days. Patients were subdivided according to their injury pattern into four groups: group 1: AIS thorax < 3; AIS liver < 3; group 2: AIS thorax ≥ 3; AIS liver < 3; group 3: AIS thorax < 3; AIS liver ≥ 3 and group 4: AIS thorax ≥ 3; AIS liver ≥ 3.
Results: Overall, 2643 (21%) developed pulmonary failure, 12% (n= 642) in group 1, 26% (n= 697) in group 2, 16% (n= 30) in group 3, and 36% (n= 188) in group 4. Factors independently associated with pulmonary failure included relevant lung injury, pre-existing medical conditions (PMC), sex, transfusion of more than 10 units of packed red blood cells (PRBC), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) ≤ 8, and the ISS. However, liver injury was not associated with an increased risk of pulmonary failure following severe trauma in our setting.
Conclusions: Specific factors, but not liver injury, were associated with an increased risk of pulmonary failure following trauma. Trauma surgeons should be aware of these factors for optimized intensive care treatment
