The transition to adulthood is known to be a challenging period, particularly for care leavers who have been known to achieve poor outcomes. This study aimed to examine the Throughcare experience and outcomes achieved by young people who are simultaneously leaving care and experiencing depression. This study also adopted a multi-theoretical approach which accommodates both inner and external factors as potential elements which influence care leavers’ transitions. This theoretical position offered a useful approach for studying the multi-dimensional and complex reality of care leavers who suffer from depression. A qualitative methodological approach based on the constructivist paradigm was adopted for this study. Twenty seven young people who suffer from depression were interviewed and their data was complemented by information collected from seventeen key informants and a small group of young people leaving care who were not suffering from depression. The data was inductively analysed. The study found that some young people develop a material meaning of independence which leads them to disregard their mental health. This contributes to their inability to deal with problems and the difficult transitions they experience, where self-harm and suicide are often perceived as viable solutions for their problems. Poor mental health was also found to negatively impact on educational and work performance, school attendance, finding work, ability to maintain a job and perceptions of education and work. Other factors which impacted on education and work were attachment problems, inability to deal with simultaneous challenging problems, peer pressure, and the lack of appropriate formal and informal support. These young people also experienced poor housing outcomes, including the inability to sustain a tenancy, poor gate keeping, problems with neighbours and eviction leading to homelessness. Overall, the study concluded that care leavers with depression have specific vulnerabilities that contribute to difficult transitions to independent living. More attention needs to be paid to supporting these young people through strategic planning and policy, and investment in adequate resources to enable them to make successful transitions

Care leavers' engagement with services : motivational factors which sustain a positive relationship

    Get PDF
According to Mitchell (1982), motivation refers to 'psychological processes that cause the arousal, direction and persistence of voluntary actions that are goal directed' (Mitchell 1982, p. 81). Thus, motivation is an individual process which might be influenced by extrinsic and intrinsic factors to the individuals. The former refers to the external factors experienced which make us self-determined to accomplish a certain task (for example, rewards such as money or a work promotion). The latter refers to the self-interest and enjoyment that a person experiences from doing an activity (for example, voluntary work)

Among the most targeted species for obtaining palm hearts, Euterpe edulis, popularly known as juçara palm hearts, stands out and is threatened with extinction. The rational use of other palm trees for the production of palm hearts has been one of the alternatives to reduce the pressure of exploitation on the juçara palm: Archontophoenix alexandrae, Bactris gasipaes, Euterpe oleracea. This narrative literature review aims to discuss the four main palm tree species in Brazil. It is noted that despite the risk of extinction, there is still illegal and clandestine extraction of the Euterpe edulis species. The species of the same genus, E. oleracea, has a significant cultivation in the northern region, but mainly due to the use of the fruit. Archontophoenix alexandrae is an exotic species that has adapted well to Brazil and I offer a quality palm heart in the Brazilian market. The most cultivated species today is peach palm, it has advantages such as high tillering and shorter cultivation time. This study investigates the effects of State action on health in Brazil, considering social determinants of health. As a benchmark for population health outcomes, we adopted the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). The research method is quantitative, with a quasi-experimental design. It is an ecological study using the 438 Brazilian health regions as unit of analysis. The data were collected from official government sources. The main statistical technique adopted was multiple logistic regression analysis. An outstanding aspect drawn from the results is that all the dimensions that measure state action used in this study presented statistically significant effects in decreasing the chances of a region being in a high IMR group, depending on the control variables included in the model. The only variable that presented a significant effect, considering all other factors of control, was the prenatal coverage indicator. Another important result was that the socioeconomic situation of the region had a substantial and significant effect on all models tested when the highest income level was compared to the lowest. Thus, for a possible reduction of health inequalities, the very determinants of social inequalities should be taken into account in addition to determinant or associated health factors. However, it should be noted that state action alone in the health area has the potential to act in determining the health conditions of the circumscribed population in each health region, even when considering the unequal distribution of socioeconomic factors in these territories

Metabolismo de lipídeos na reprodução de carrapatos

    Get PDF
Ticks are parasitic arthropods and vectors of human and animal health-threatening pathogens. Among the tick species of worldwide economic importance, Rhipicephalus microplus is noticeable. In Brazil, annual losses related to this tick are estimated to be 3.4 billion dollars. Chemical acaricides are the main and globally used tool to control this tick. However, the selection of populations resistant to most of these drugs, and the possibility of acaricide residues persistence in animal products encourage research for new control methods. So, one strategy relies on the identification of components with a role in physiological pathways that are crucial to parasite life, and that could be useful to develop control methods. Thus, this thesis has two aims, (i) to elucidate the Gené's organ (GO) role in tick reproduction, and (ii) to prevent tick reproduction by interfering in lipids metabolism, precisely in cholesterol metabolism. GO is a particular structure of ticks and is elementary for the egg laying process, since it secretes the protective wax that covers the eggshell. In Chapter 1, the GO lipid metabolism was analyzed before and during oviposition, through "omics" tools. These data confirm the indispensable role of this organ for tick reproduction, either by synthesizing lipids or secreting the wax. GO presents machineries to synthesize, elongate, modify, oxidize and secrete fatty acids, as well as modify, degrade and secrete steroids. Since ticks do not synthesize cholesterol, the hypothesis is that components of a fundamental and not redundant pathway could be an approach in order to interfere in tick viability and be used as the basis for a new control method. Therefore, Chapter 2 shows that administrating inhibitors (ezetimibe and avasimibe) of proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism reduces the reproductive capacity of females, impairs egg development and make them more susceptible to bacterial colonization. Results presented in this thesis show that cholesterol metabolism a pathway is suitable to be used as target for tick control
