    Constraining Elko Dark Matter at the LHC with Monophoton Events

    A mass dimension one fermion, also known as Elko, constitutes a dark matter candidate which might interact with photons at the tree level in a specific fashion. In this work, we investigate the constraints imposed by unitarity and LHC data on this type of interactions using the search for new physics in monophoton events. We found that Elkos which can explain the dark matter relic abundance mainly through electromagnetic interactions are excluded at the 95\%CL by the 8 TeV LHC data for masses up to 1 TeV.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Jerusalem artichoke as low-cost fructose-rich feedstock for fossil fuels desulphurization by a fructophilic bacterium

    Aims: Through biodesulphurization (BDS) is possible to remove the sulphur present in fossil fuels to carry out the very strict legislation. However, this biological process is limited by the cost of the culture medium, and thus, it is important to explore cheaper alternative carbon sources, such as Jerusalem artichoke (JA). These carbon sources usually contain sulphates which interfere with the BDS process. The goal of this work was to remove the sulphates from Jerusalem artichoke juice (JAJ) through BaCl2 precipitation viewing the optimization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) desulphurization by Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B. Methods and Results: Using a statistical design (Doehlert distribution), the effect of BaCl2 concentration (0·125–0·625%) and pH (5–9) was studied on sulphate concentration in hydrolysed JAJ. A validated surface response derived from data indicated that zero sulphates can be achieved with 0·5–0·55% (w/v) BaCl2 at pH 7; however, parallel BDS assays showed that the highest desulphurization was obtained with the juice treated with 0·5% (w/v) BaCl2 at pH 8·73. Further assays demonstrated that enhanced DBT desulphurization was achieved using hydrolysed JAJ treated in these optimal conditions. A total conversion of 400 µmol l-1 DBT into 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) in <90 h was observed, attaining a 2-HBP maximum production rate of 28·2 µmol l-1 h-1 and a specific production rate of 5·06 µmol-1 g-1(DCW) h-1. Conclusions: These results highlight the efficacy of the treatment applied to JAJ in making this agromaterial a promising low-cost renewable feedstock for improved BDS by the fructophilic strain 1B.     Fisher matrix forecasts for astrophysical tests of the stability of the fine-structure constant

    We use Fisher Matrix analysis techniques to forecast the cosmological impact of astrophysical tests of the stability of the fine-structure constant to be carried out by the forthcoming ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT (due for commissioning in late 2017), as well by the planned high-resolution spectrograph (currently in Phase A) for the European Extremely Large Telescope. Assuming a fiducial model without α\alpha variations, we show that ESPRESSO can improve current bounds on the E\"{o}tv\"{o}s parameter---which quantifies Weak Equivalence Principle violations---by up to two orders of magnitude, leading to stronger bounds than those expected from the ongoing tests with the MICROSCOPE satellite, while constraints from the E-ELT should be competitive with those of the proposed STEP satellite. Should an α\alpha variation be detected, these measurements will further constrain cosmological parameters, being particularly sensitive to the dynamics of dark energy.Comment: Phys. Lett.     Remote experimentation: integrating research, education, and industrial application

    This paper presents a low-cost scaled model of a silo for drying and airing cereal grains. It allows the control and monitor of several parameters associated to the silo's operation, through a remote accessible infrastructure. The scaled model consists of a 2.50 m wide × 2.10 m long plant with all control and monitor capacities provided by micro-Web servers. An application running on the micro-Web servers enables storing all parameters in a data basis for later analysis. The implemented model aims to support a remote experimentation facility for technological education, research-oriented tutorials, and industrial applications. Given the low-cost requirement, this remote facility can be easily replicated in other institutions to support a network of remote labs, which encompasses the concurrent access of several users (e.g. students)

    From cheating to teaching: a path for conversion of illegal gambling machines

    Video poker machines, a former symbol of fraud and gambling in Brazil, are now being converted into computer-based educational tools for Brazilian public primary schools and also for governmental and non-governmental institutions dealing with communities of poverty and social exclusion, in an attempt to reduce poverty risks (decrease money spent on gambling) and promote social inclusion (increase access and motivation to education). Thousands of illegal gambling machines are seized by federal authorities, in Brazil, every year, and usually destroyed at the end of the criminal apprehension process. This paper describes a project developed by the University of Southern Santa Catarina, Brazil, responsible for the conversion process of gambling machines, and the social inclusion opportunities derived from it. All project members worked on a volunteer basis, seeking to promote social inclusion of Brazilian young boys and girls, namely through digital inclusion. So far, the project has been able to convert over 200 gambling machines and install them in over 40 public primary schools, thus directly benefiting more than 12,000 schoolchildren. The initial motivation behind this project was technology based, however the different options arising from the conversion process of the gambling machines have also motivated a rather innovative and unique experience in allowing schoolchildren and young people with special (educational) needs to access to computer-based pedagogical applications. The availability of these converted machines also helps to place Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the very daily educational environment of these children and youngsters, thus serving social and cultural inclusion aspects, by establishing a dialogue with the community and their technological expectations, and also directly contributing to their digital literacy

    Physical activity levels in physiotherapy bachelor students

    Background: Physical activity is one of the best ways to promote health. University students are exposed to a series of obstacles to the practice of physical activity. Health professionals, more than prescribing physical exercise, and in particular physiotherapists, should be examples of healthy lifestyles and exercise practice, it is therefore important to have an estimate of the level of activity physical activity in students, in order to identify means of promoting it in Physiotherapy students. Objective: Describe the level of physical activity of students enrolled in the Physiotherapy Bachelor degree at the Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão (ESSA) in the 4 years of the course. Methods: During 2018 the level of physical activity of 99 students was evaluated, using the short version of the International Questionnaire of Physical Activity (IPAQ), distributed to the students of the 4 years of the Physiotherapy Bachelor degree using an online survey. Results: In relation to the number of days of physical activity (59.8%) of the students answered that they practice physical activity every day of the week and only (4.1%) of the individuals answered that they do not practice any day, being that in men the level of moderate activity predominates, whereas in women there is a dispersion through the three levels of activity. The first year is what reveals a higher percentage in the activity level low (46.2%) and lower in the high activity level (38.5%) compared with other school years. Discussion: Based on the results obtained in this study, health professionals should note that the transition to higher education is a critical time to promote physical activity and implement new programs of physical activity mainly among women and in the first year of the course where to be observed a lower level of physical activity. Conclusion: In addition to having skills, for the prescription and monitoring of physical exercise, physiotherapists should be an example of a healthy lifestyle and regular practice of physical activity.N/
