ML4IoT: A Framework to Orchestrate Machine Learning Workflows on Internet of Things Data
Internet of Things (IoT) applications generate vast amounts of real-time data. Temporal analysis of these data series to discover behavioural patterns may lead to qualified knowledge affecting a broad range of industries. Hence, the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms over IoT data has the potential to improve safety, economy, and performance in critical processes. However, creating ML workflows at scale is a challenging task that depends upon both production and specialized skills. Such tasks require investigation, understanding, selection, and implementation of specific ML workflows, which often lead to bottlenecks, production issues, and code management complexity and even then may not have a final desirable outcome. This paper proposes the Machine Learning Framework for IoT data (ML4IoT), which is designed to orchestrate ML workflows, particularly on large volumes of data series. The ML4IoT framework enables the implementation of several types of ML models, each one with a different workflow. These models can be easily configured and used through a simple pipeline. ML4IoT has been designed to use container-based components to enable training and deployment of various ML models in parallel. The results obtained suggest that the proposed framework can manage real-world IoT heterogeneous data by providing elasticity, robustness, and performance
Light Art : light as matter in artistic work
This research has as its theme light as material to artistic making, and its objective is to analyze and understand how luminous objects are transformed into artworks. Therefore, we make a brief explanation about how we can understand what light is, from the perspective of philosophy and the sciences. Then we present the History of three-dimensional use of light in the visual arts, to the advent of Light Art. We do an analysis of the construction of space by light in the works of Dan Flavin. A transposição poética.

Seismic response analysis of concrete block masonry buildings: an experimental study using shaking table
The combination of a series of structural and economic advantages like the high capacity to resist compressive loads, the simple and easy method of construction, comfort properties and structural performance given for the new masonry structures makes the implementation of masonry as a profitable solution for the increased residential houses demand. An innovative solution for the construction of low to medium residential masonry buildings is here analysed. The assessment of the earthquake resistance capacity of this system is evaluated aiming at providing further guidelines for its design and construction. This paper presents a step in this process related to the experimental mechanical validation of the constructive system based on concrete block masonry buildings under seismic loading
Behavioural Ecology Traits of Elusive Deep-Diver Whales Unravel a Complex Social Structure Influenced by Female Philopatry and Defence Polygyny
Knowledge of the role of individual associations has provided an insightful understanding of the structures of animal societies, especially in highly social mammals such as primates. Yet, this is unbalanced towards marine mammals, particularly to beaked whales, due to their elusive nature. In addition, information on the fundamental drivers of the social structure of these deep-diving animals is still scarce. Here, the hypothesis of female defence polygyny was tested in Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) and discussed within the context of marine and terrestrial organisms displaying similar patterns, by (i) estimating residency times to obtain information on the movements into and out of the area, (ii) analysing social networks to assess individual association metrics, (iii) measuring the strength of the associations to assess the existence of preferred or avoided relationships among individuals, and (iv) modelling different social structures to address temporal patterns in social relationships. Using a 9-year photographic dataset derived from the pelagic habitat, individual associations were inferred based on likelihood techniques. This approach allowed to infer on the species’ social structure in relation to age class, sex, residency status, and spatio-temporal patterns, which can be a good practice to be applied for other taxa. Heterogeneity in capture probability and residency times was observed between age-sex classes, with adult females exhibiting long-term site fidelity. This suggests different habitat roles and spatial structuring within this social organisation. Strong and long dyadic associations occurred between adult females and immatures, contrarily to between males, and the best-fitting models of the temporal patterns suggested long-lasting and temporary associations. The present findings unravel a complex social structure stratified by age-sex class and influenced by female philopatry and defence polygyny, like an unimale group mating system, which varies from other beaked whales but is similar to some birds, pinnipeds, or non-human primates.FUNDING: The Oceanic Observatory of Madeira and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) throughout the strategic projects M1420-01-0142-FEDER-000001 and UIDB/04292/2020, respectively. Global gene expression of Poncirus trifoliata, Citrus sunki and their hybrids under infection of Phytophthora parasitica
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gummosis and root rot caused by <it>Phytophthora </it>are among the most economically important diseases in citrus. Four F1 resistant hybrids (Pool R), and four F1 susceptible hybrids (Pool S) to <it>P. parasitica</it>, were selected from a cross between susceptible <it>Citrus sunki </it>and resistant <it>Poncirus trifoliata </it>cv. Rubidoux. We investigated gene expression in pools of four resistant and four susceptible hybrids in comparison with their parents 48 hours after <it>P. parasitica </it>inoculation. We proposed that genes differentially expressed between resistant and susceptible parents and between their resistant and susceptible hybrids provide promising candidates for identifying transcripts involved in disease resistance. A microarray containing 62,876 UniGene transcripts selected from the CitEST database and prepared by NimbleGen Systems was used for analyzing global gene expression 48 hours after infection with <it>P. parasitica</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Three pairs of data comparisons (<it>P. trifoliata</it>/<it>C. sunki</it>, Pool R/<it>C. sunki </it>and Pool R/Pool S) were performed. With a filter of false-discovery rate less than 0.05 and fold change greater than 3.0, 21 UniGene transcripts common to the three pairwise comparative were found to be up-regulated, and 3 UniGene transcripts were down-regulated. Among them, our results indicated that the selected transcripts were probably involved in the whole process of plant defense responses to pathogen attack, including transcriptional regulation, signaling, activation of defense genes participating in HR, single dominant genes (<it>R gene</it>) such as TIR-NBS-LRR and RPS4 and switch of defense-related metabolism pathway. Differentially expressed genes were validated by RT-qPCR in susceptible and resistant plants and between inoculated and uninoculated control plants</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Twenty four UniGene transcripts were identified as candidate genes for <it>Citrus </it>response to <it>P. parasitica</it>. UniGene transcripts were likely to be involved in disease resistance, such as genes potentially involved in secondary metabolite synthesis, intracellular osmotic adjustment, signal transduction pathways of cell death, oxidative burst and defense gene expression. Furthermore, our microarray data suggest another type of resistance in <it>Citrus</it>-<it>Phytophthora </it>interaction conferred by single dominant genes (<it>R gene</it>) since we encountered two previously reported <it>R genes </it>(TIR-NBS-LRR and RPS4) upregulated in the resistant genotypes relative to susceptible. We identified 7 transcripts with homology in other plants but yet unclear functional characterization which are an interesting pool for further analyses and 3 transcripts where no significant similarity was found. This is the first microarray study addressing an evaluation of transcriptional changes in response to <it>P. parasitica </it>in <it>Citrus</it>.</p
