This paper aims to present the data concerning Campanian ware from Mesas do Castelinho (fig. 1) from the vast collection of archaeological material recovered over 23 excavation campaigns (1989–2012) directed by Carlos Fabião and Amílcar Guerra. The ensemble is one of the most significant in what is now Portuguese territory, at least of those already published2 , and raises several issues, such as the presence of rare or unique forms or makes, but perhaps most importantly, the observation of stratigraphic sequences which allow us to establish a connection with the Romanization of the settlement, its the relations with the surrounding territory and its integration in trade routes connected to the Mediterranean.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The circulation of South Gaulish sigillata in southern Lusitania: Alentejo region and the Algarve (Portugal)

Research carried out recently in different contexts at Roman sites in the Algarve and Alentejo has defined distinct sets of South Gaulish sigillata, so elucidating an understanding of the main consumption trends in that region. In this work, recent and older sets of data concerning this category of tableware imported from La Graufesenque are revisited, presented and discussed. The plain and decorated forms are analyzed, as well as the potter’s stamps from sites in southern areas of the present Portuguese territory, which in Roman times corresponded to the province of Lusitania. Even in the case of samples with very unequal compositions, we have identified different consumption patterns between the Alentejo and the Algarve sites, and have compared them with each other and with sets from other regions of Lusitania and Baetica.

Enabling supernova cosmology with large time-domain surveys

It was recently discovered that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) were crucial for this discovery and to constrain cosmological parameters. Current and upcoming large time-domain surveys will revolutionise the field by discovering at least one order of magnitude more SNe than the currently available datasets, which will lead to tighter cosmological parameter constraints. However, these surveys will also bring challenges due to the volume of data they observe. Thus, we require new methods to analyse, understand, and extract cosmological constraints from the data. In particular, the upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) must rely on photometric classification to identify the observed SNe, instead of the traditional spectroscopic confirmation. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to perform this photometric classification based on dataset augmentation, wavelet features, and a machine learning classifier. Specifically, we find that augmenting the training set to make its features similar to the dataset we want to classify is crucial. Next, we use our methodology to measure the impact of the LSST observing strategy in photometric classification; this work contributes towards the community-focused optimisation of the observing strategy. Since the above work used simulated data, we next set a benchmark for the classification performance of our approach using the Zwicky Transient Facility real data; this is a precursor survey to LSST. Finally, we present a proof-of-concept of a neural network to predict lensed SN Ia parameters from light curves and images of those events

Predicting consumer purchase intention and purchase behaviour of fashion items made from recycled plastic using the theory of planned behaviour

Fashion produced from recycled plastic offers considerable promise as an innovation that could simultaneously minimize the impacts of the fashion industry, while also recycling plastic that would otherwise go to waste, ending up in landfills for centuries or polluting oceans. As the fast fashion industry grows exponentially, creating negative impacts on people and the planet, fashion produced from recycled plastic is often mentioned as an alternative to minimize the impacts of fast fashion. This dissertation aims to explore consumer purchase intention and consumer purchase behaviour of fashion items produced from recycled plastic. This research applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour as a foundation to predict consumer purchase intention, as well as consumer purchase behaviour, testing the model through multiple linear regressions. An online questionnaire was applied and 277 valid answers were included in the analysis. Overall, findings demonstrate that attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control are significant predictors of purchase intention. Moreover, perceived behavioural control and purchase intention are also considered good predictors of purchase behaviour. Awareness of the negative impacts of fast fashion, however, was not established as a predictor of purchase intention of fashion produced from recycled plastic. This dissertation enriches knowledge on recycled fashion, particularly in the Portuguese context and draws new insights on consumer purchase intention and consumer purchase behaviour. Managerial contributions go beyond encouraging companies to adopt recycled plastic fashion in their processes, promoting the mindset of using wasted resources to produce value, proving that one man’s trash is another men’s treasure.

Sectoral and regional impacts of the European Carbon Market in Portugal

Across Europe, CO2 emission permits represent one of the main policy instruments to comply with the limits established by the European Commission to achieve the goals of the Kyoto Protocol. In this paper we use microdata to address two issues regarding the impact of the European Carbon Market (EU ETS). On the one hand, we analyse the sectoral effects of the EU ETS in Portugal. The main goal is to study the outcomes of this policy in terms of the transactions carried out between sectors, as well as the distributive consequences. On the other hand, we also look at the regional impact. The pre-existing specialization of different regions in the production of different goods and services might lead to an uneven economic impact of the new permit market. In particular, Portuguese data indicate a distribution of revenue from low income to high income regions, or rather, between installations located in those regions. We focus on the first two years of operation of the EU ETS, using data for each one of the 244 Portuguese installations regulated by this market as well as financial data for 80% of these installationsRegional impact, sectoral impact, tradable CO2 permits, European Carbon Market.
