Un ginandromorfo de <i>Xylocopa nigrocincta</i> Smith (Hymenoptera: Apidae)
We describe a mixed gynandromorph of Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) nigrocincta from a single specimen from Argentina. The specimen presents bilateral asymmetry, with the right half of its head displaying male characters and the left half displaying female characters; the mesosoma presents male characters mostly in the right half of the prothorax, pronotal lobe and distal half of the fore tibia and in the pubescence of tarsus; the rest of the mesosoma and the metasoma display female features.Se describe un ginandromorfo mixto de Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) nigrocincta de un ejemplar de Argentina. Distal Tumors Elicit Distinctive Gene Expression Changes in Mouse Brain, Different from Those Induced by Arthritis
Background: Tumor progression is characterized by high mutation rates, each mutation potentially generating an “alarm” signal. The brain is the main integrator of signals arising in the periphery from changes in homeostasis. We hypothesized that tumors growing at a distant site might be a stimulus strong enough to be molecularly sensed and integrated by the brain. Results: Transcriptome analysis of the mouse hypothalamus, midbrain, and pre-fontal cortex at different time points following administration at a distant site of mammary, lung and colon cancer cells evidenced cancer-type and brain-region specific changes in gene expression. On the contrary, no significant gene expression changes were detected in the liver. The hypothalamus was the region with the largest number of differentially expressed genes. On the array and off the array analysis of hypothalamic samples using real time PCR confirmed changes in genes associated with synaptic activity and sickness response, respectively. Gene clustering allowed the discrimination between each cancer model and between the cancer models and arthritis. Conclusions: The present data provides evidence of changes in gene expression in the brain during progression of distal tumors and arthritis highlighting a potential link between distal pathological processes and the brain.Fil: Alvarez, Mariano J.. SPARC Controls Melanoma Cell Plasticity through Rac1.
Cell transition to a more aggressive mesenchymal-like phenotype is a hallmark of cancer progression that involves different steps and requires tightly regulated cell plasticity. SPARC (Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine) is a matricellular protein that promotes this transition in various malignant cell types, including melanoma cells. We found that suppression of SPARC expression in human melanoma cells compromised cell migration, adhesion, cytoskeleton structure, and cell size. These changes involved the Akt/mTOR pathway. Re-expression of SPARC or protein addition restored all the cell features. Suppression of SPARC expression was associated with increased Rac1-GTP levels and its membrane localization. Expression of the dominant negative mutant of Rac1 counteracted almost all the changes observed in SPARC-deficient cells. Overall, these data suggest that most of the SPARC-mediated effects occurred mainly through the blockade of Rac1 activity.Fil: Salvatierra Colussi, Edgardo Enrique. SPARC endogenous level, rather than fibroblast-produced SPARC or stroma reorganization induced by SPARC, is responsible for melanoma cell growth
SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine) is a matricellular protein whose overexpression in malignant or tumor-stromal cells is often associated with increased aggressiveness and bad prognosis in a wide range of human cancer types, particularly melanoma. We established the impact that changes in the level of SPARC produced by malignant cells and neighboring stromal cells have on melanoma growth. Melanoma cell growth in monolayer was only slightly affected by changes in SPARC levels. However, melanoma growth in spheroids was strongly inhibited upon SPARC hyperexpression and conversely enhanced when SPARC expression was downregulated. Interestingly, SPARC overexpression in neighboring fibroblasts had no effect on spheroid growth irrespective of SPARC levels expressed by the melanoma cells, themselves. Downregulation of SPARC expression in melanoma cells induced their rejection in vivo through a mechanism mediated exclusively by host polymorphonuclear cells. On the other hand, SPARC hyperexpression enhanced vascular density, collagen deposition, and fibroblast recruitment in the surrounding stroma without affecting melanoma growth. In agreement with the in vitro data, overexpression of SPARC in co-injected fibroblasts did not affect melanoma growth in vivo. All the data indicate that melanoma growth is not subject to regulation by exogenous SPARC, nor by stromal organization, but only by SPARC levels produced by the malignant cells themselves.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

Seasonal cycle of precipitation variability in South America on intraseasonal timescales
The seasonal cycle of the intraseasonal (IS) variability of precipitation in South America is described through the analysis of bandpass filtered outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomalies. The analysis is discriminated between short (10--30 days) and long (30--90 days) intraseasonal timescales. The seasonal cycle of the 30--90-day IS variability can be well described by the activity of first leading pattern (EOF1) computed separately for the wet season (October--April) and the dry season (May--September). In agreement with previous works, the EOF1 spatial distribution during the wet season is that of a dipole with centers of actions in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and southeastern South America (SESA), while during the dry season, only the last center is discernible. In both seasons, the pattern is highly influenced by the activity of the Madden--Julian Oscillation (MJO). Moreover, EOF1 is related with a tropical zonal-wavenumber-1 structure superposed with coherent wave trains extended along the South Pacific during the wet season, while during the dry season the wavenumber-1 structure is not observed. The 10--30-day IS variability of OLR in South America can be well represented by the activity of the EOF1 computed through considering all seasons together, a dipole but with the stronger center located over SESA. While the convection activity at the tropical band does not seem to influence its activity, there are evidences that the atmospheric variability at subtropical-extratropical regions might have a role. Subpolar wavetrains are observed in the Pacific throughout the year and less intense during DJF, while a path of wave energy dispersion along a subtropical wavetrain also characterizes the other seasons. Further work is needed to identify the sources of the 10--30-day-IS variability in South America
Obtaining Communities with a Fitness Growth Process
The study of community structure has been a hot topic of research over the
last years. But, while successfully applied in several areas, the concept lacks
of a general and precise notion. Facts like the hierarchical structure and
heterogeneity of complex networks make it difficult to unify the idea of
community and its evaluation. The global functional known as modularity is
probably the most used technique in this area. Nevertheless, its limits have
been deeply studied. Local techniques as the ones by Lancichinetti et al. and
Palla et al. arose as an answer to the resolution limit and degeneracies that
modularity has.
Here we start from the algorithm by Lancichinetti et al. and propose a unique
growth process for a fitness function that, while being local, finds a
community partition that covers the whole network, updating the scale parameter
dynamically. We test the quality of our results by using a set of benchmarks of
heterogeneous graphs. We discuss alternative measures for evaluating the
community structure and, in the light of them, infer possible explanations for
the better performance of local methods compared to global ones in these cases
Dark Matter in split extended supersymmetry
We consider the split extended (N=2) supersymmetry scenario recently proposed
by Antoniadis et al. [hep-ph/0507192] as a realistic low energy framework
arising from intersecting brane models. While all scalar superpartners and
charged gauginos are naturally at a heavy scale, the model low energy spectrum
contains a Higgsino-like chargino and a neutralino sector made out of two
Higgsino and two Bino states. We show that the lightest neutralino is a viable
dark matter candidate, finding regions in the parameter space where its thermal
relic abundance matches the latest determination of the density of matter in
the
Universe by WMAP. We also discuss dark matter detection strategies within
this model: we point out that current data on cosmic-ray antimatter already
place significant constraints on the model, while direct detection is the most
promising technique for the future. Analogies and differences with respect to

Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine produced by human melanoma cells modulates polymorphonuclear leukocyte recruitment and antitumor cytotoxic capacity
The expression of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) has been associated with the malignant progression of different types of human cancer. SPARC was associated with tumor cell capacity to migrate and invade, although its precise role in tumor progression is still elusive. In the present study, we show that SPARC produced by melanoma cells modulates the antitumor activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). Administration to nude mice of human melanoma cells in which SPARC expression was transiently or stably knocked down by antisense RNA (SPARC-sup cells) promoted PMN recruitment and obliterated tumor growth even when SPARC-sup cells accounted for only 10% of injected malignant cells. In addition, SPARC-sup cells stimulated the in vitro migration and triggered the antimelanoma cytotoxic capacity of human PMN, an effect that was reverted in the presence of SPARC purified from melanoma cells or by reexpressing SPARC in SPARC-sup cells. Leukotrienes, interleukin 8, and growth-related oncogene, in combination with Fas ligand and interleukin 1, mediated SPARC effects. These data indicate that SPARC plays an essential role in tumor evasion from immune surveillance through the inhibition of the antitumor PMN activity.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria
