Cellulosic materials as natural fillers in starch-containing matrix-based films: a review

In this work, the different cellulosic materials, namely cellulose and lignin are analyzed. In addition, the starch-containing matrices (isolated starch and flour) reinforced with cellulosic materials to be used in packaging applications are described. Many efforts have been exerted to develop biopackaging based on renewable polymers, since these could reduce the environmental impact caused by petrochemical resources. Special attention has had the starch as macromolecule for forming biodegradable packaging. For these reasons, shall also be subject of this review the effect of each type of cellulosic material on the starch-containing matrix-based thermoplastic materials. In this manner, this review contains a description of films based on starch-containing matrices and biocomposites, and then has a review of cellulosic material-based fillers. In the same way, this review contains an analysis of the works carried out on starch-containing matrices reinforced with cellulose and lignin. Finally, the manufacturing processes of starch/cellulose composites are provided as well as the conclusions and the outlook for future works.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. ANALYSIS OF GENDER RELATIONS IN THE INDUSTRIAL COMMUNITY OF AGUIRRE, PUERTO RICO

This thesis is a study of the gender relations of the residents of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, between 1940 and 1991. The primary goal of the project was to explore how gender roles and relations in the Aguirre community were impacted by the social class system introduced by the Aguirre Sugar Company. This project was based on the interpretation of the past and present situation of the Aguirre community using oral history, by conducting a series of interviews among its residents. The interviews resulted in three main themes. First, the concepts of `normal and natural\u27 were used to distinguish gender roles. Second, Aguirreños identified `family as community\u27, since through the family individuals built their gender identity and learned the basic rules of coexistence within the social hierarchy of the community. Third, although the gender and class roles were clear in the community, `resistance and negotiation\u27 occurred in the home and at the Company between those of different gender and social classes. The Aguirre Sugar Company was one of the principal influences on the construction of the Aguirreños identity, and left a mark on the past, present and future generations

Los problemas científicos y el progreso en la ciencia

El presente trabajo propone un análisis del papel que juegan los problemas científicos dentro del modelo de progreso científico presentado por Philip Kitcher en El avance de la ciencia. El modelo de progreso de Philip Kitcher incluye no sólo la resolución de problemas sino también la formulación de problemas que él llamó progreso erotético. En este trabajo se tratará de aplicar su modelo de progreso erotético a dos ejemplos tomados de la teoría evolutiva darwiniana, teoría que el propio Kitcher considera uno de los grandes logros de la ciencia.In this paper I propose to analyze the role of scientific problems within the scientific model presented by Philip Kitcher in The Advancement of Science. The progress model Philip Kitcher includes not only problem solving but also problems formulation what he called erotetic progress. Nuevas voces y especios en los relatos cortos de Ambai

Literatura is an important tool to understand how cultures and identities represent themselves. Images are enclosed within words creating illusions of presence, metonyms and signs of identities’ absence and loss. If repetition is the language the dominant discourse uses to create a “ripple-like pattern”, Ambai, one of the fi nest contemporary short-story writers in Tamil, makes use of that mimesis to strategically compel already made stereotypical images that, arduously re-written, attempt to its own deconstruction. This paper aims to analyze the “equipment of living” given by a dominant discourse and how Ambai twists it in order to give voice to the Other of the Other. La literatura es una herramiento necesaria para comprender cómo las identidades y los espacios han sido y son representados. Ambai, autora Tamil de narrativa breve, crea imágenes a través de sus palabras inscribiendo signos identitarios y el por qué de la ausencia de una autenticidad propia de los mismos en las mujeres. A través de una estrategia mimética, la autora reinscribe situaciones estereotípicas que acabn siendo deconstruidas a lo largo de su obra.
