Studies that try to understand how mammals use the space are extremely important to
improve conservation decisions. Despite the high knowledge of mammals in the
Amazon forest, little is known about this group in the varzea forests. These forests are
located in the lowland inundated regions of the Amazon basin, and are seasonally
inundated by white-water rivers. Varzea forests were, and still are, intensively used by
humans, because of the easy access and the high fertility of it soils. Beyond that,
climatic changes and the actual Brazilian politics, which encourages constructions of
hydroelectric plants, are direct threats to the varzea and the animals that live there. The
goal of this study is understand how variations on the vegetation influence the
distribution of medium and large-sized mammals in the varzea forest. For this, we
executed two consecutive years of camera traps surveys during dry season in
Sustainable Development Reserves Amanã and Mamirauá, Central Amazonia.
Specifically, we compared the community composition of mammals between an upland
forest (Amanã) and a varzea forest (Mamirauá), and we tested the response of
mammal’s species to the vegetation variation in the varzea forest. The sampling grid in
each reserve consisted of up to 50 baited camera trap stations and an overall sampling
effort of 4075 camera trap*days. We used a pre-exist landscape mapping of Mamirauá
Reserve and from it we calculated the area (km2) of the habitats inside two different
scales (500 m and 1000 m) around each camera trap station. The comparison between
the mammal species of upland and varzea was made with an ordination by NMDS of
two dimensions and after that a Similarity Analysis (ANOSIM), both using Bray-Curtis
indice. To test the influence of the varzea vegetation’s in the mammal distribution we
used Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and, for the species with too many zeros, Zero-
Inflated Models (ZIP/ZINB) or Hurdle Models (ZAP/ZANB). During the study, we
recorded 21 medium and large-sized mammal species of 3443 records. Among this
species, seven are classified as ‘vulnerable’ globally or in Brazil. As expected the
community composition of mammals were different between upland and varzea forest.
At the varzea we recorded only six species, while upland recorded 20 species. The
mammal’s community of várzea forest presented a hierarchical subgroup pattern of the
upland community, and all the species registered in the várzea have semi-arboreal
habits. Tree species recorded in varzea forest were more represented there than in
upland forest, which could be related with biggest populations at this region. The varzea
vegetation’s were related with almost all species distributions, the exception was
Leopardus wiedii. The total number of records and the composition of species were
influenced by the habitat chavascal, such there were fewer records with chavascal area
increase. At the same way, Didelphis marsupialis e Nasua nasua avoided areas of
chavascal. N. nasua avoided too the open fields of herbaceous vegetation. The specie
Coendou prehensilis was positively influenced by constant water habitats and high
varzea forest, while Panthera onca avoided high varzea forest.
A partir do mapeamento espacial
A espécie Coendou prehensilis teve relação
A bovine, Bos indicus, with bilateral varicocele diagnosticed by palpation and ultrasound observation was observed during 24 months measuring scrotal circumference, semen quality, testosterone concentrations comparing with seasonal variation and other animals of the same species. The abnormal morphology of major defects and minor defects didn't change between the bull and the other animals, however, the total defects were higher during the summer in the bull with varicocele (49,9%±6,9) when compared with the other bulls (27,9%±2,9). The animal showed higher percentage of major defects during the summer, comparing with the other seasons of the year. For the animal with varicocele testosterone levels were significantly higher during the different season's of the year, whereas decreasing levels in the summer were seen in all Bos indicus. The clinical diagnostic was confirmed by necropsy. This pathology, characterized by a bilateral varicocele with thrombosis of the spermatic cord vessels, showed that the thermoregulation suffered establishing severe testicular degeneration. As seric testosterone increased suggesting lack of steroid retention at the testicle by the pampiniform plexus, the sperm production was abnormal
Nitrous oxide emission from excreta of different beef cattle breeds finished in feedlot
The objective of this work was to compare nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from urine and manure of Nellore and crossbred (Nellore x Angus) cattle finished in feedlot. Twenty Nellore and 20 crossbred bulls were fed a diet consisting of 75% concentrate and 25% roughage. Excreta were applied to the pens after 43 days of confinement, when N2O monitoring started through static chambers. The data were subjected to the analysis of variance, and averages were compared by Tukey’s test. The N2O fluxes from urine and manure were similar among the breeds, with important peaks after rain events. The cumulative emissions of N2O from urine per kilogram of body weight gain (BWG) and the total emissions from manure per kilogram of BWG were 22.7% and 24.4% higher in Nellore cattle. There is no breed effect on N2O flux and cumulative emissions by excreta from confined beef cattle; however, the crossbreed emits less per kilogram of BWG. There is a high correlation between rainfall volume and the N2O emissions of the next day, which indicates a period between rain occurrence and the increase in N2O emission

Eleven captive adult female African lions (Panthera leo) at the Fundação Parque Zoológico de São Paulo were blood sampled in order to assess the serum hormone levels (estradiol and progesterone) and their correlation with the vaginal citology. The morphological and stainning characteristics of vaginal cells were similar to those described for domestic cats. Based on hormonal profiles of estradiol and progesterone described for domestic cats, three different phases for the ovarian cycle of the lionesses were clearly described: diestrus, estrus and interestrus. The mean serum estradiol concentrations in the estrus (23,33 +/- 2,92 pg/ml) were significantly higher than in diestrus and interestrus. The mean serum progesterone values in diestrus (20,12 +/- 17,55 ng/ml) were significantly higher than in estrus and interestrus. There were correlations between progesterone values and the number of superficial cornified vaginal cells (r = - 0,603 and p = 0,0496) and between progesterone and intermediate cells (r = 0,637and p = 0,0350). There were also a strong negative correlation between the number of superficial cornified vaginal cells and intermediate cells (r = -0,979 e p < 0,0001). It concluded that the correlations between vaginal cells and the serum estradiol and progesterone levels allowed us to identify three different phases of the ovarian cycle in female African lion.
An investigation into the stability of an oregano essential oil emulsion for the preparation of microparticles using spray drying.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the viscosity, zeta potential and soluble and total solids of the emulsion and microparticles of oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare) using gum arabic as a coating agent and to analyze the morphology of the microparticles produced by the spray drying method. The rheological analysis showed a viscosity for emulsion of 36.23 ± 0.59 mPas and for microparticles of 20.13 ± 0.15 mPa.s. The zeta potential of the emulsion was - 6.67 ± 0.32 mV and of the oregano oil microparticles -16.47 ± 0.70 mV. Soluble solids showed Brix° of 8.44 ± 0.13 and 0.98 ± 0.36 and total solids 8.95 ± 0.42 and 1.03 ± 0.02 % for emulsion and microparticles, respectively. The morphology of the microparticles presented irregular spherical shapes and agglomeration
Successful xenogeneic germ cell transplantation from Jundia catfish (Rhamdia quelen) into adult Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) testes
Fish germ cell transplantation presents several important potential applications for aquaculture, including the preservation of germplasm from endangered fish species with high genetic and commercial values. Using this technique in studies developed in our laboratory with adult male Nile tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus), all the necessary procedures were successfully established, allowing the production of functional sperm and healthy progeny approximately 2 months after allogeneic transplantation. In the present study, we evaluated the viability of the adult Nile tilapia testis to generate sperm after xenogeneic transplant of germ cells from sexually mature Jundia catfish (Rhamdia quelen) that belong to a different taxonomic order. Therefore, in order to investigate at different time-periods post-transplantation, the presence and development of donor PKH26 labeled catfish germ cells were followed in the tilapia seminiferous tubules. From 7 to 20 days post-transplantation, only PKH26 labeled spermatogonia were observed, whereas spermatocytes at different stages of development were found at 70 days. Germ cell transplantation success and progression of spermatogenesis were indicated by the presence of labeled PKH26 spermatids and sperm on days 90 and 120 post-transplantation, respectively. Confirming the presence of the catfish genetic material in the tilapia testis, all recipient tilapias evaluated (n = 8) showed the genetic markers evaluated. Therefore, we demonstrated for the first time that the adult Nile tilapia testis offers the functional conditions for development of spermatogenesis with sperm production from a fish species belonging to a different order, which provides an important new venue for aquaculture advancement. © 2016 Elsevier Inc
Toxicological and behavioral impacts of atrazine on Trichogrammatidae (Hymenoptera) in choice tests.
Weeds should be controlled with low impact methods and selective agrochemicals that have little or no effect on non-target organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the herbicide atrazine (triazine class) on 10 Trichogrammatidae (Hymenoptera) species. A female of 10 species of these natural enemies was individually placed in a glass test tube (free-choice test) with two paper cards containing 45 Anagasta (Ephestia) kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs (treatment and control), with 10 replications. The cards were sprayed with the herbicide atrazine at 8.07 L/ha; the control was sprayed with distilled water. Parasitism by these natural enemies was allowed for 48 h. Atrazine changes the behavior of female parasitoids, reducing the parasitism (≈ 71 %) and emergence (≈ 74 %) rates and sex ratio (≈ 74 %) of the Trichogrammatidae species, except for Trichogramma galloi and T. bennetti. No females emerged from eggs parasitized by T. acacioi, Trichogrammatoidea annulata, T. atopovirilia, T. bruni, T. brasiliensis, T. demoraesi, and T. soaresi with atrazine. The results revealed that atrazine herbicide is harmless to T. bennetti and T. galloi, but it was moderately harmful (80 – 99 % reduction) to the other Trichogrammatidae species based on the parasitism and emergence rates
