Challenging the Sustainable Social Progress
The Presentation held at the ceremony for granting the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of The West University in Timisoara is based on a paper which presents a synthetic view on some economic and financial issues of our times, considering especially the crisis of the last period, and mentioning a few remarkable ideas about the mentality of humankind. The author takes into consideration in a large view, regarding economy, some aspects of physics and of other fields of modern science, such as philosophy, including irreversibility of time, suitable for our full of uncertainty and complex reality, wishing to achieve goals related to solving the economic issues and to social progress.
PRESISTANT: Learning based assistant for data pre-processing
Data pre-processing is one of the most time consuming and relevant steps in a
data analysis process (e.g., classification task). A given data pre-processing
operator (e.g., transformation) can have positive, negative or zero impact on
the final result of the analysis. Expert users have the required knowledge to
find the right pre-processing operators. However, when it comes to non-experts,
they are overwhelmed by the amount of pre-processing operators and it is
challenging for them to find operators that would positively impact their
analysis (e.g., increase the predictive accuracy of a classifier). Existing
solutions either assume that users have expert knowledge, or they recommend
pre-processing operators that are only "syntactically" applicable to a dataset,
without taking into account their impact on the final analysis. In this work,
we aim at providing assistance to non-expert users by recommending data
pre-processing operators that are ranked according to their impact on the final
analysis. We developed a tool PRESISTANT, that uses Random Forests to learn the
impact of pre-processing operators on the performance (e.g., predictive
accuracy) of 5 different classification algorithms, such as J48, Naive Bayes,
PART, Logistic Regression, and Nearest Neighbor. Extensive evaluations on the
recommendations provided by our tool, show that PRESISTANT can effectively help
non-experts in order to achieve improved results in their analytical tasks
The theme of this article is the application of techniques of exploratory statistics to the study of comprehensive numerical tables consisting of statistics of a spatial nature. The immensity of statistics compiled over a large area, as in the case of a population census, frequently makes it difficult to assimilate all the information contained therein. It is shown that the mentioned techniques of analysis make possible a profound understanding of such statistics without resorting to the inspection of the said tables. The objectives usually pursued are: (1) to emphasize the most outstanding characteristics of the statistics, such as associations and/or contrasts in the elements under study, an objective which is easily fulfilled through methods of descriptive factorial analysis; (2) to group the basic elements of study into a limited number of representative classes, which can likewise be easily achieved through a simple algorithm of ascendent hierarchical classification. The aplication of this method demonstrates the compatibility of the two results. This normally corresponds to the final stage in the study of statistical tables, in which observations relate to small areas points. The natural desire to make the classes obtained coincide with gegraphical regions made necessary the introduction of the content relationship within the algorithm of ascendent hierarchical classification. The application undertaken makes it possible to identify improvements in the interpretation of the classes obtained.

In memoriam of Marvin Zuckerman: His impact on Spanish Psychology
The work of recently deceased Marvin Zuckerman is wellknown in Psychology. Zuckerman is mainly known around the world for
describing the nature of the Sensation Seeking personality trait (with
a strong biological basis related to physiology, endocrinology, brain
biochemistry and genetics), and its practical usefulness in explaining
many human behaviors, especially high-risk behaviors. Method: The
article refers to biographical aspects of Zuckerman’s career, and presents
and presents an outline of results produced in Spain within the Zuckerman
framework. Results: We summarize studies conducted in our context
with the Sensation Seeking Scale, form V (SSS-V), the ZuckermanKuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), the new ZuckermanKuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire (ZKA-PQ) and its short form
(ZKA-PQ/SF) about psychometric and biological aspects of Zuckerman’s
theory. Conclusions: Results support the good psychometric properties of
the Zuckerman instruments, the transcultural viability of his personality
model, and their multiple biological correlates (gonadal hormones, genetic
polymorphisms, and electrophysiological variables such as the startle
refl ex and frontal spectroscopy [fNIR]). The whole picture demonstrates
the great usefulness of Zuckerman’s theoretical framework in personality
