Symmetry dependence of phonon lineshapes in superconductors with anisotropic gaps
The temperature dependence below of the lineshape of optical phonons
of different symmetry as seen in Raman scattering is investigated for
superconductors with anisotropic energy gaps. It is shown that the symmetry of
the electron-phonon vertex produces non-trivial couplings to an anisotropic
energy gap which leads to unique changes in the phonon lineshape for phonons of
different symmetry. The phonon lineshape is calculated in detail for
and phonons in a superconductor with pairing
symmetry. The role of satellite peaks generated by the electron-phonon coupling
are also addressed. The theory accounts for the substantial phonon narrowing of
the phonon, while narrowing of the phonon which is
indistinguishable from the normal state is shown, in agreement with recent

Electronic signature of the vacancy ordering in NbO (Nb3O3)
We investigated the electronic structure of the vacancy-ordered 4d-transition
metal monoxide NbO (Nb3O3) using angle-integrated soft- and hard-x-ray
photoelectron spectroscopy as well as ultra-violet angle-resolved photoelectron
spectroscopy. We found that density-functional-based band structure
calculations can describe the spectral features accurately provided that
self-interaction effects are taken into account. In the angle-resolved spectra
we were able to identify the so-called vacancy band that characterizes the
ordering of the vacancies. This together with the band structure results
indicates the important role of the very large inter-Nb-4d hybridization for
the formation of the ordered vacancies and the high thermal stability of the
ordered structure of niobium monoxide
Hole concentration and phonon renormalization in Ca-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_y (6.76 < y < 7.00)
In order to access the overdoped regime of the YBa_2Cu_3O_y phase diagram, 2%
Ca is substituted for Y in YBa_2Cu_3O_y (y = 7.00,6.93,6.88,6.76). Raman
scattering studies have been carried out on these four single crystals.
Measurements of the superconductivity-induced renormalization in frequency
(Delta \omega) and linewidth (\Delta 2\gamma) of the 340 cm^{-1} B_{1g} phonon
demonstrate that the magnitude of the renormalization is directly related to
the hole concentration (p), and not simply the oxygen content. The changes in
\Delta \omega with p imply that the superconducting gap (\Delta_{max})
decreases monotonically with increasing hole concentration in the overdoped
regime, and \Delta \omega falls to zero in the underdoped regime. The linewidth
renormalization \Delta 2\gamma is negative in the underdoped regime, crossing

Superconductivity-Induced Anomalies in the Spin Excitation Spectra of Underdoped YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}
Polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering has been used to determine the
effect of superconductivity on the magnetic excitation spectra of YBa_2 Cu_3
O_{6.5} (T_c = 52K) and YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.7} (T_c = 67K). Pronounced enhancements
of the spectral weight centered around 25 meV and 33 meV, respectively, are
observed below T_c in both crystals, compensated predominantly by a loss of
spectral weight at higher energies. The data provide important clues to the
origin of the 40 meV magnetic resonance peak in YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7.Comment: LaTex, 4 pages, 4 ps figures. to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Neutron Scattering and the B_{1g} Phonon in the Cuprates
The momentum dependent lineshape of the out-of-phase oxygen vibration as
measured in recent neutron scattering measurements is investigated. Starting
from a microscopic coupling of the phonon vibration to a local crystal field,
the phonon lineshift and broadening is calculated as a function of transfered
momentum in the superconducting state of YBaCuO. It is shown
that the anisotropy of the density of states, superconducting energy gap, and
the electron-phonon coupling are all crucial in order to explain these

VISTA in Soft Tissue Sarcomas: A Perspective for Immunotherapy?
Simple Summary V domain immunoglobulin suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA) has recently been described as a protein expressed on immune cells and tumour cells and a possible target for immunotherapy. We show for the first time that VISTA is broadly expressed across subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma. We found VISTA related to other immunopathological parameters such as tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes and observed improved survival in patients with non-T-cell-inflamed tumours expressing VISTA. Our research supports the notion of VISTA as a potential target for immunotherapy in soft tissue sarcoma. Abstract (1) Background: V domain immunoglobulin suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA) plays a critical role in antitumor immunity and may be a valuable target in cancer immunotherapy. To date, it has never been studied in a large and well-characterised cohort of soft tissue sarcomas (STS). (2) Methods: Using immunohistochemistry, we examined VISTA expression in tumour tissues of 213 high-risk STS. We then analysed whether VISTA was associated with other clinicopathological parameters, including tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) counts, programmed death receptor-1 (PD1), programmed death ligand-1 (PDL1), CD3, grading, and long-term survival. (3) Results: We observed VISTA expression in 96 (45%) of 213 specimens with distinct patterns ranging from 26 to 63% for histological subtypes. VISTA was associated with higher grade (G3 vs. G2, p = 0.019), higher TIL counts ( p = 0.033), expression of PD1 ( p = 0.046), PDL1 ( p = 0.031), and CD3+ ( p = 0.023). In patients without CD3 + TILs, 10-year survival was higher when VISTA was expressed compared to when there was no VISTA expression ( p = 0.013). In a multivariate analysis, VISTA expression was independently associated with prolonged survival ( p = 0.043). (4) Conclusions: VISTA is expressed in different STS subtypes and is associated with increased TILs, PD-1, PD-L1, and CD3 expression. Patients with VISTA + tumours show improved survival. These results may help define future immunotherapeutic approaches in STS
Cancer Testis Antigens and Immunotherapy: Expression of PRAME Is Associated with Prognosis in Soft Tissue Sarcoma
(1) Background: PRAME, NY-ESO-1, and SSX2 are cancer testis antigens (CTAs), which are expressed in testicular germ cells with re-expression in numerous cancer types. Their ability to elicit humoral and cellular immune responses have rendered them promising targets for cancer immunotherapy, but they have never been studied in a large and well-characterised cohort of soft tissue sarcomas (STS). (2) Methods: On a protein level, we examined PRAME, NY-ESO-1, and SSX2 expression in tumour tissues of 249 high-risk STS using immunohistochemistry. We correlated expression levels with clinicopathological parameters including tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) counts, grading, and long-term survival. (3) Results: Expression of PRAME, NY-ESO-1, and SSX2 was observed in 25 (10%), 19 (8%), and 11 (4%) of 249 specimens with distinct patterns for histo-subtypes. Expression of PRAME was associated with shorter patient survival (p = 0.005) and higher grade (G2 vs. G3, p = 0.001), while NY-ESO-1 expression was correlated with more favourable survival (p = 0.037) and lower grade (G2 vs. G3, p = 0.029). Both PRAME and NY-ESO-1 expression were more frequent in STS with low TIL counts. In multivariate analysis, high PRAME and low SSX2 expression levels as well as metastatic disease and non-radical resections were independent predictors of shorter overall survival. (4) Conclusions: CTAs PRAME, NY-ESO-1, and SSX2 show distinct expression patterns in different STS subtypes. These results demonstrate their prognostic relevance and may guide future immunotherapeutic approaches in STS
Influence of the pseudogap on the superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization in high-T superconductors
We investigate the influence of a d-density wave (DDW) gap on the
superconductivity-induced renormalization of phonon frequency and linewidth.
The results are discussed with respect to Raman and inelastic neutron
scattering experiments. It turns out that the DDW gap can enhance the range of
frequencies for phonon softening depending on the underlying band
structure. Moreover we show that an anisotropic 'd-wave' pseudogap can also
contribute to the q-dependent linewidth broadening of the 340cm phonon
in YBaCuO.Comment: 4 page
Evolution of the resonance and incommensurate spin fluctuations in superconducting YBaCuO
Polarized and unpolarized neutron triple-axis spectrometry was used to study
the dynamical magnetic susceptibility as
a function of energy () and wave vector () in a wide
temperature range for the bilayer superconductor YBaCuO with
oxygen concentrations, , of 0.45, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.93, and 0.95. The
most prominent features in the magnetic spectra include a spin gap in the
superconducting state, a pseudogap in the normal state, the much-discussed
resonance, and incommensurate spin fluctuations below the resonance. We
establish the doping dependence of the spin gap in the superconducting state,
the resonance energy, and the incommensurability of the spin fluctuations. We
discuss in detail the procedure used for separating the magnetic scattering
from phonon and other spurious effects. In the comparison of our experimental
results with various microscopic theoretical models, particular emphasis was
made to address the similarities and differences in the spin fluctuations of
