    Saudi Retail Firms’ Attitudes Towards Social Responsibility in Advertising: A Comparison with Western Firms

    The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of Saudi retail firms towards social responsibility in advertising, in comparison with western firms. In order to meet this objective, a qualitative research method is employed, using interviews as the primary source of information. The study finds that Saudi retail firms expect advertising to be socially responsible, in order to safeguard both them and their consumers, as well as society in general. They believe that social responsibility involves being mindful of society, and being equipped with values such as fairness and honesty that they consider will protect the interests of society. The limitation involved in this study is that only a small sample group is interviewed, although the interviewees represent the strongest stakeholders in the sector concerned. This study is significant as it enhances the understanding of the importance of social responsibility, and determines the factors that hinder its implementation.     The nutritional, hormonal and vitamin status in overweight and obesity

    Background: Obesity is a global epidemic which is increasing dramatically in overwhelming rates among males and females of all age categories in developing and developed countries.Methods: The first phase of the project involves the questionnaires which apply to all the Participants in research. We also use the lab investigation to determine the abnormality in overweight and obese people. Then we will analysis and combine the results to others research and give output and recommendation that we hope helping us to limiting of increase incidence of obesity.Results: sample show that high cholesterol above normal average approximately in 31.05% of the participants while the triglyceride rate increased in 31.67%. A lack of vitamin D, as the rate did not exceed 18±6.8, in individuals with the BMI 25-29, and to be 13±8.82, in individuals with the BMI>30. Vitamin B12 rate became borderline in individuals with BMI 25-29, and deficient in individuals with BMI>30.Conclusions: Obese Saudi individuals have several nutritional deficiencies specifically in vitamins D and B12 despite their overweight. Efforts should be focused to increase awareness of healthy and weight control

    Kuwaiti EFL Students’ Perceptions of the Effectiveness of the Remedial English Course 099 at the College of Technological Studies

    The study aims to evaluate the English remedial course 099 taught in the College of Technological Studies (PAAET) as part of the English program which disseminates English Language Skills to EFL students studying at this college. This study is expected to provide sufficient information to policymakers and educators involved with this program at all levels, with the intention to help them evaluate this course and make useful decisions to improve English Language Teaching in order to combat the deficiency in the English language suffered by college students in Kuwait. A number of 155 students participated in a questionnaire of 15 statements divided into four areas: reading, grammar, writing, and speaking skills. The findings of the study showed that most EFL students benefited from the English course 099, and their language skills were improved. However, there were some drawbacks and weaknesses of the program in terms of learners’ assessments and follow up. The significance of the study arises from the fact that it would enable decision-makers and course evaluators to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of the course and hence find ways to improve it

    Alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition and antioxidant potential of 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid isolated from Nuxia oppositifolia

    Nuxia oppositifolia is traditionally used in diabetes treatment in many Arabian countries; however, scientific evidence is lacking. Hence, the present study explored the antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of the plant extracts and their purified compounds. The methanolic crude extract of N. oppositifolia was partitioned using a two-solvent system. The n-hexane fraction was purified by silica gel column chromatography to yield several compounds including katononic acid and 3-oxolupenal. Antidiabetic activities were assessed by α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition. Antioxidant capacities were examined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging assays. Further, the interaction between enzymes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and ligands (3-oxolupenal and katononic acid) was followed by fluorescence quenching and molecular docking studies. 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid showed IC50 values of 46.2 µg/mL (101.6 µM) and 52.4 µg/mL (119.3 µM), respectively against the amylase inhibition. 3-oxolupenal (62.3 µg/mL or 141.9 µM) exhibited more potent inhibition against α-glucosidases compared to katononic acid (88.6 µg/mL or 194.8 µM). In terms of antioxidant activity, the relatively polar crude extract and n-butanol fraction showed the greatest DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity. However, the antioxidant activities of the purified compounds were in the low to moderate range. Molecular docking studies confirmed that 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid interacted strongly with the active site residues of both α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Fluorescence quenching results also suggest that 3-oxolupenal and katononic acid have a good affinity towards both α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. This study provides preliminary data for the plant’s use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus

    The Effectiveness of Using E-learning and Distance Learning Applications in Jordanian Universities in the light of the Coronavirus Pandemic from the Students Point of View

    This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of e-learning and distance learning (DL) tools in Jordanian universities according to the students perception of the coronavirus. The study followed a descriptive research method using descriptive questionnaires. A sample of (372) male and female undergraduate and graduate students from different Jordanian universities. The results showed that (73.7%) of the respondents used online distance learning every day during the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the students believe that the coronavirus epidemic has changed the use of online education more and more and the use of electronic devices to increase communication with others (teachers, colleagues). There is no significant difference in the level (α≥ 0.05) of the effectiveness of using E-Learning and Distance Learning applications according to gender and residence. Although a significant difference occurred between the variable age and the degree of university. The results of the study can be used to advise the teacher to focus more on activities that show a high level of enjoyment, especially website optimization and instruction. Colleges are now seen as important places of learning in the classroom. Websites and tutorials must be updated regularly

    A systematic review and meta-analysis of heart rate variability in COPD

    Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with disruption in autonomic nervous control of the heart rhythm. We present here quantitative evidence of the reduction in HRV measures as well as the challenges to clinical application of HRV in COPD clinics. Method: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we search in June 2022 Medline and Embase databases for studies reporting HRV in COPD patients using relevant medical subject headings (MeSH) terms. The quality of included studies was assessed using the modified version of the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Descriptive data were extracted, while standardized mean difference was computed for changes in HRV due to COPD. Leave-one-out sensitivity test was performed to assess exaggerated effect size and funnel plots to assess publication bias. Results: The databases search yielded 512 studies, of which we included 27 that met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the studies (73%) had a low risk of bias and included a total of 839 COPD patients. Although there were high between-studies heterogeneity, HRV time and frequency domains were significantly reduced in COPD patients compared with controls. Sensitivity test showed no exaggerated effect sizes and the funnel plot showed general low publication bias. Conclusion: COPD is associated with autonomic nervous dysfunction as measured by HRV. Both sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiac modulation were decreased, but there is still a predominance of sympathetic activity. There is high variability in the HRV measurement methodology, which affects clinical applicability

    Successful intralesional bleomycin injections for the management of a huge life-threatening cervical lymphangioma in a 3-day-old neonate

    Intralesional bleomycin injections (IBI) for the management of a huge life-threatening cervical cystic hygroma is superior to surgery. Surgery has a high rate of morbidity and even mortality. Recurrence and injury to major vessels, nerves, and lymphatics may be unavoidable. The authors report on a 3-day-old male infant who was diagnosed antenatally as a case of a huge cervical cystic hygroma. Postnatally, the patient required mechanical ventilation. The patient was treated successfully with IBI without complications. To our knowledge, this is the youngest case presenting acutely to be treated successfully with IBI without complications.Keywords: bleomycin, neonatal cystic hygroma, respiratory distres

    Double low-dose computed tomography pulmonary angiography in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of double low-dose (low radiation and low contrast medium doses) computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. This retrospective study involved analysis of 59 patients undergoing 64- and 128-slice CTPA examinations which were scanned with a pitch of 0.9 and 100 and 120 kVp, respectively, while flash mode of CTPA was done with a pitch of 3.2 and 120 kVp. There were no significant differences in image quality assessment between the low kVp and standard kVp or high-pitch CTPA protocols (p=0.181-0.186). The mean effective dose for the 100 kVp protocol was significantly lower than that for the120 kVp and the flash mode protocols (p<0.001). The contrast medium was between 35-45 ml for the 100 and 120 kVp protocols, and 20-30 ml for the 120 kVp flash mode protocol. Double low-dose CT pulmonary angiography is feasible for detection of pulmonary embolism with acquisition of diagnostic images
