This study was performed to determine the antibacterial activity of methanol extracts of 23 bryophyte species against Paenibacillus larvae isolates that cause American foulbrood diseases in honeybee larvae. The honey and larva samples were collected from nine different locations of Rize in Turkey. A total of 22 gram-positive spore-forming bacteria were isolated from the larva and honey samples. According to the results of morphological, biochemical, and molecular (16S rRNA gene sequencing) tests, 10 isolates of the 22 gram-positive spore-forming bacteria were identified as P. larvae. A total of 10 bryophyte species (Polytrichum formasum,Polytrichum commune, Calliergonella cuspitada, Calliergonella lindbergi, Metzgeria conjugata, Isothecium alopecuroides, Syntrichia calcicola, Syntrichia intermedia, Tortella densa, and Grimmia alpestris) among 23 bryophytes showed good antimicrobial activity against P. larvae isolates according the results of agar-well diffusion method and minimal inhibition concentration experiments

Microwave-assisted synthesis of some hybrid molecules derived from morpholine and investigation of their antimicrobial activities

2H-1,2,4-triazol-3(4H)-one compound was obtained starting from 4-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)morpholine via several steps. Then, these compounds were converted to the corresponding fluoroquinolone hybrids via one pot three component Mannich reaction. Moreover, the synthesis of eleven compounds, which can be considered as conazole analogues, was performed starting from 1,2,4-triazole-3-one compounds via three steps by either conventional or microwave mediated conditions. The effect of different solvents and microwave power on microwave prompted reactions was examined as well

COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology centers in Turkey

Background/aim: There is limited data on COVID-19 disease in children with kidney disease. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology patients in Turkey. Materials and methods: This was a national, multicenter, retrospective cohort study based on an online survey evaluating the data between 11th March 2020 and 11th March 2021 as an initial step of a detailed pediatric nephrology COVID-19 registry. Results: Two hundred and three patients (89 girls and 114 boys) were diagnosed with COVID-19. One-third of these patients (36.9%) were between 10–15 years old. Half of the patients were on kidney replacement therapy: kidney transplant (KTx) recipients (n = 56, 27.5%), patients receiving chronic hemodialysis (n = 33, 16.3%) and those on peritoneal dialysis (PD) (n = 18, 8.9%). Fifty-four (26.6%) children were asymptomatic. Eighty-two (40.3%) patients were hospitalized and 23 (28%) needed intensive care unit admission. Fifty-five percent of the patients were not treated, while the remaining was given favipiravir (20.7%), steroid (16.3%), and hydroxychloroquine (11.3%). Acute kidney injury developed in 19.5% of hospitalized patients. Five (2.4%) had MIS-C. Eighty-three percent of the patients were discharged without any apparent sequelae, while 7 (3.4%) died. One hundred and eight health care staff were infected during the study period. Conclusion: COVID-19 was most commonly seen in patients who underwent KTx and received HD. The combined immunosuppressive therapy and frequent exposure to the hospital setting may increase these patients’ susceptibility. Staff infections before vaccination era were alarming, various precautions should be taken for infection control, particularly optimal vaccination coverage

Wind speed time series chacacterization hy Hilbert transform

    Get PDF
Predictions of wind energy potential in a given region are based on on-location observations. The time series of these observations would later be analysed and modelled either by a probability density function (pdf) such as a Weibull curve to represent the data or recently by soft computing techniques, such as neural networks (NNs). In this paper, discrete Hilbert transform has been applied to characterize the wind sample data measured on Izmir Institute of Technology campus area which is located in Urla, Izmir, Turkey, in March 2001 and 2002. By applying discrete Hilbert transform filter, the instantaneous amplitude, phase and frequency are found, and characterization of wind speed is acomplished. Authors have also tried to estimate the hourly wind data using daily sequence by Hilbert transform technique. Results are varying

This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status and determine the nutritional problems of the cucumber grown under the greenhouse conditions in Çarşamba ve Bafra Regions. For this objective, from Çarşamba and Bafra region, 30 leaf samples and 60 soil samples (at the depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) were collected. In the soil samples texture, pH, CaCO3, total salt, organic matter, available P and K, DTPA+TEA extractable Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn, and in the leaf samples; total Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn analyses were conducted. Nutritional status of surveyed leaf and soils were evaluated by comparing the results of analyses with the interpretative values for the nutriens. According to experimental results, the soil pH of the experimental region was slightly alkaline and neutral. In regards to the majority of soil samples were highly calcareous, non-saline and slight to moderate salinity In regards to organic matter, the majority of soil samples were poor in humus content. The textures of soil samples, were clay loam and clay characteristics. The available phosphorus and potassium content were rich. The DTPA+TEA extractable iron, zinc, manganese and copper were at sufficient levels. Evaluation of the leaf analysis results show that the iron content of leaf samples was sufficient, zinc, manganese and copper contents were sufficient and high levels
