    Get PDF
This study analyzes the complementarity of foreign technology acquired under license agreements, technology embedded in machinery and equipment and increase in a company’s productive capacity. We use panel data on Brazilian manufacturing companies from the World Bank Surveys. We used the random effects models, estimated by maximum likelihood. The results indicate that foreign technology, embedded technology and increase of productive capacity have a positive and significant impact on labor productivity. The complementarity test reveals that the relationship between the two technologies analyzed is conditionally substitutive and that the relationship between each of these technologies and increase of productive capacity is conditionally complementary. A retrospective stydy was made of 48 patellar fractures who were threated with a hemipatellectomy. The mean time of follow-up was 14,6 years. The results were assessed with use of clinical, radiological, subjective and isokinetic quadriceps strength-testing criteria. The mean active range of motion was 89%, the strength of quadriceps was 83% and the circumference of the thigh was 97% of these measurements in the contralateral extremity. The over-all results was rated as excellent in 45,83%, dood in 39,58%, fair in 10,41% and poor in 4,16%. There was a significant statistical correlation between the type of fracture, the previous patology in the knee, the associated lesions caused by trauma and the outcome. The results of this study indicate that hemipatellectomy can be an effective and secure treatment for selected patellar fractures

The discontinous thromboprophylaxis is a determinant cause in the presence of thromboembolic complications in the first month after hospital discharge. The difficult administration of the low -molecular- weight heparin by the patient and the different preoccupation for this problem between the Primary Care and the orthopedics specialists are the causes that incite to discontinous thromboprophylaxis. A prospective study was made of 221 patients who undergoing a total hip arthroplasty or a total knee arthroplasty and the objective was to investigate the incidence of venous thrombosis in the patients who were treated with oral sulodexide in the first month after hospital discharge. We analized the efficacy and the secondary effects of sulodexide. There were satisfactory results in 98,8% of patients who were treated with sulodexide (1,2% of venous complications), and 21% of venous complications in the group of patients who did not continue the thromboprophylactic treatment

Accurate rotor speed estimation for low-power wind turbines

Small grid-tied wind turbines based on permanent magnet generators often use a cost-effective power converter topology consisting of a passive rectifier, a boost converter, and an H-bridge inverter. Speed or position sensors are rarely used due to cost issues. Model-based estimators relying on electrical magnitudes are used instead. However, such estimators are parameter sensitive, which limit their accuracy. Further concerns arise if these parameters change with the operating condition of the machine, mainly due to temperature. Speed sensorless control using the rectifier voltage ripple is analyzed in this paper. This technique provides good dynamic response and does not depend on machine parameters. Simulations are provided for speed and power tracking comparison with an accurate model-based speed estimation method operating at non-rated parameters. The speed accuracy and power tracking capability of the proposed method are similar to that provided by a speed sensor. This is translated into a 0.9% power increase when the model-based speed estimator shows 9% of error. Experimental results are carried out to test the effect of current and temperature in the estimation, showing temperature insensitivity and some distortion due to fast current transients. A speed estimation accuracy of zero mean error and 1.7% standard error is experimentally obtained in the regular operation of the wind turbin

A Deep Learning Approach for Fusing Sensor Data from Screw Compressors

[EN] Chillers are commonly used for thermal regulation to maintain indoor comfort in medium and large buildings. However, inefficiencies in this process produce significant losses, and optimization tasks are limited because of accessibility to the system. Data analysis techniques transform measurements coming from several sensors into useful information. Recent deep learning approaches have achieved excellent results in many applications. These techniques can be used for computing new data representations that provide comprehensive information from the device. This allows real-time monitoring, where information can be checked with current working operation to detect any type of anomaly in the process. In this work, a model based on a 1D convolutional neural network is proposed for fusing data in order to predict four different control stages of a screw compressor in a chiller. The evaluation of the method was performed using real data from a chiller in a hospital building. Results show a satisfactory performance and acceptable training time in comparison with other recent methods. In addition, the model is capable of predicting control states of other screw compressors different than the one used in the training. Furthermore, two failure cases are simulated, providing an early alarm detection when a continuous wrong classification is performed by the model.SIThis research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Regional Development Fund under project DPI2015-69891-C2-1-R/2-R.Ministerio de Economía y Competitivida

Materialities, Space, Mind: Archaeology of Visual Cognition

A perceptual study of different styles of prehistoric Galician ceramics (from 6000 to 2000 BP) conducted by eye-tracking, underpins the material engagement of mind by showing that the visual world fosters the entanglement between doing, seeing, and designing through history. This text examines how materializations of human practices relate to cognition and to socio-cultural contexts. By combining evidence on the relationship between material culture and perceptual reactions, our text aims to understand the entanglement between the mind, objects and the world. We apply measurable and numeric techniques, providing an archaeometric approach to cognitive topics by combining neurosciences with interpretive and reflective research. This research provides new insights into the material culture, contributes to the understanding of the relationship between mind and the material world, and accounts for the transitive engagement between the way of thinking, seeing and making things. Thus, the text contributes to an understanding of the material forces driving perception and thought

    Get PDF
