Using Grip Strength as a Cardiovascular Risk Indicator Based on Hybrid Algorithms

    Get PDF
This article shows the application and design of a hybrid algorithm capable of classifying people into risk groups using data such as prehensile strength, body mass index and percentage of fat. The implementation was done on Python and proposes a tool to help make medical decisions regarding the cardiovascular health of patients. The data were taken in a systematic way, k-means and c-means algorithms were used for the classification of the data, for the prediction of new data two vectorial support machines were used, one for the k-means and the other for the c-means, obtaining as a result a 100% of precision in the vectorial support machine with c-means and a 92% in the one of k-means

Ramírez-Vélez, R, Correa-Bautista, JE, Lobelo, F, Cadore, EL, Alonso-Martinez, AM, and Izquierdo, M. Vertical jump and leg power normative data for Colombian schoolchildren aged 9-17.9 years: the FUPRECOL study. J Strength Cond Res 31(4): 990-998, 2017 - The aims of the present study were to generate normative vertical jump height and predicted peak power (P peak) data for 9- to 17.9-year-olds and to investigate between-sex and age group differences in these measures. This was a cross-sectional study of 7,614 healthy schoolchildren (boys n = 3,258 and girls n = 4,356, mean [SD] age 12.8 [2.3] years). Each participant performed 2 countermovement jumps; jump height was calculated using a Takei 5414 Jump-DF Digital Vertical (Takei Scientific Instruments Co., Ltd.). The highest jump was used for analysis and in the calculation of predicted P peak. Centile smoothed curves, percentiles, and tables for the 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 97th percentiles were calculated using Cole's LMS (L [curve Box-Cox], M [curve median], and S [curve coefficient of variation]) method. The 2-way analysis of variance tests showed that maximum jump height (in centimeters) and predicted P peak (in watts) were higher in boys than in girls (p less than 0.01). Post hoc analyses within sexes showed yearly increases in jump height and P peak in all ages. In boys, the maximum jump height and predicted P peak 50th percentile ranged from 24.0 to 38.0 cm and from 845.5 to 3061.6 W, respectively. In girls, the 50th percentile for jump height ranged from 22.3 to 27.0 cm, and the predicted P peak was 710.1-2036.4 W. For girls, jump height increased yearly from 9 to 17.9 years old. Our results provide, for the first time, sex- and age-specific vertical jump height and predicted P peak reference standards for Colombian schoolchildren aged 9-17.9 years. © 2017 National Strength and Conditioning Association

Fingerprint ridge density in the Argentinean population and its application to sex inference: A comparative study

    Get PDF
Fingerprint ridge density (RD) is known to vary according to sex and population, and such variation can be used for forensic purposes. The aim of this study was to analyze the fingerprint RD of two samples of the Argentinean population in order to assess their topological, digital, bilateral, sexual, and population differences for subsequent application in the inference of sex. Data were collected from the fingerprints of 172 individuals from the Buenos Aires province and 163 from the Chubut province. RD was assessed for three different count areas for all 10 fingers of each individual. In both sexes and both samples, significant differences among areas were obtained, so that radial-RD > ulnar-RD > proximal-RD. Females presented greater RD than males in all areas and on all fingers. Regarding population differences, no significant differences were found between the Buenos Aires and Chubut samples (except for proximal RD in males). However, both samples showed RD significantly different from that of the Jujuy province. The application of Bayes? theorem allowed for the identification of an RD threshold for discrimination of sexes in these Argentinean samples. In conclusion females consistently exhibit narrower epidermal ridges than males, which may evidence a universal pattern of sexual dimorphism in this trait that can be useful in forensics in the identification of individuals.Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarroll

Horner's Syndrome due to a Spontaneous Internal Carotid Artery Dissection after Deep Sea Scuba Diving

    Get PDF
Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) is a rare entity that either results from traumatic injury or can be spontaneously preceded or not by a minor trauma such as sporting activities. It represents a major cause of stroke in young patients. The diagnosis should be suspected with the combination of Horner''s syndrome, headache or neck pain, and retinal or cerebral ischaemia. The confirmation is frequently made with a magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Although anticoagulation with heparin followed by vitamin-K-antagonists is the most common treatment, there is no difference in efficacy of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs at preventing stroke and death in patients with symptomatic carotid dissection. We describe a patient with ICAD following deep sea scuba diving, who presented with Horner''s syndrome and neck pain and was successfully treated with anticoagulants

Cristalografía, Mineralogía y Química Agrícola The project "Science and art in gastronomy: gastronomic botany and molecular gastronomy" is being developed with the aim to establish and organize the exchange of knowledge and business in this area. In this way we are working to join the scientific knowledge to the health and the social well-being, without losing the current perspective from the bioeconomy which look forward the generation of wealth and work. The project belongs to specialized courses offered by The Complutense University of Madrid which aim is to update the knowledge and develop personal and professional competitions. These programs answer to a social demand on providing formation with professional immediate projection establishing a direct relation between the academic activity and the social reality

Analysis of a spatial Lotka-Volterra model with a finite range predator-prey interaction

We perform an analysis of a recent spatial version of the classical Lotka-Volterra model, where a finite scale controls individuals' interaction. We study the behavior of the predator-prey dynamics in physical spaces higher than one, showing how spatial patterns can emerge for some values of the interaction range and of the diffusion parameter.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Automatic lateral control for unmanned vehicles via genetic algorithms

    Get PDF
It is known that the techniques under the topic of Soft Computing have a strong capability of learning and cognition, as well as a good tolerance to uncertainty and imprecision. Due to these properties they can be applied successfully to Intelligent Vehicle Systems; ITS is a broad range of technologies and techniques that hold answers to many transportation problems. The unmannedcontrol of the steering wheel of a vehicle is one of the most important challenges facing researchers in this area. This paper presents a method to adjust automatically a fuzzy controller to manage the steering wheel of a mass-produced vehicle; to reach it, information about the car state while a human driver is handling the car is taken and used to adjust, via iterative geneticalgorithms an appropriated fuzzy controller. To evaluate the obtained controllers, it will be considered the performance obtained in the track following task, as well as the smoothness of the driving carried out

Charge conservation and time-varying speed of light

    Get PDF
It has been recently claimed that cosmologies with time dependent speed of light might solve some of the problems of the standard cosmological scenario, as well as inflationary scenarios. In this letter we show that most of these models, when analyzed in a consistent way, lead to large violations of charge conservation. Thus, they are severly constrained by experiment, including those where cc is a power of the scale factor and those whose source term is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. In addition, early Universe scenarios with a sudden change of cc related to baryogenesis are discarded.Comment: 4 page
