    Software Defined Channel Sounder for Power Line Communications

    Most power line channel sounders are based on expensive lab instruments. This work presents an alternative based on software defined radio platforms. These can be later also employed as communication modems, decreasing costs and deployment times. We implemented and evaluated two channel sounding techniques: frequency hopping and sliding correlator. The results suggest that frequency hopping might be a better candidate for power line channels due to the expected low signal-to-noise ratio

    Wireless Data Transmission for the Battery Management System of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

    This work introduces a novel wireless approach for the data transmission within automotive battery management systems. The main target is the reduction of the wiring harness deployed in a battery. The characteristics of the wireless in-battery channel are investigated by means of measurements and software-based electromagnetic simulations. Different types of antennas and frequency bands are analyzed. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by means of simulations and prototypes

    One-pot synthesized functionalized mesoporous silica as a reversed-phase sorbent for solid-phase extraction of endocrine disrupting compounds in milks

    A new procedure for the determination of 12 naturally occurring hormones and some related synthetic chemicals in milk, commonly used as growth promoters in cattle, is reported. The method is based on liquid–liquid extraction followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) using a new one-pot synthesized ordered mesoporous silica (of the SBA-15 type) functionalized with octadecyl groups (denoted as SBA-15-C18-CO) as reversed-phase sorbent. The analytes were eluted with methanol and then submitted to HPLC with diode array detection. Under optimal conditions, the method quantification limit for the analytes ranged from 0.023 to 1.36 μg/mL. The sorbent affored the extraction of estrone, 17β-estradiol, estriol, progesterone, hexestrol, diethylstilbestrol, 4-androstene-3,17-dione, ethinylestradiol, 17α-methyltestosterone, nandrolone, prednisolone and testosterone with mean recoveries ranging from 72% to 105% (except for diethylstilbestrol) with RSD < 11%. These results were comparable and, in some cases, even better than those obtained with other extraction methods, therefore SBA-15-C18-CO mesoporous silica possess a high potential as a reversed-phase sorbent for SPE of the 12 mentioned endocrine disrupting compounds in milk samples

    Water insertion and combined interstitial-vacancy oxygen conduction in the layered perovskites La1.2Sr0.8−xBaxInO4+δ

    Layered perovskites of K2NiF4-type consist of single octahedral sheets alternating with NaCl-type layers, containing a substantial interstitial space. Based on the parent LaSrInO4+δ oxide, the series of title compounds have been prepared and investigated as possible solid electrolytes for solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC). A charge misbalance is created by departure from the La/Sr = 1 : 1 ratio, favoring the insertion of extra oxygen atoms. The oxygen diffusion is further favored by introducing large Ba2+ ions, expanding the unit-cell size. Surprisingly, the presence of basic Ba ions drives the spontaneous insertion of water molecules in the interstitial space, as unveiled by a neutron powder diffraction (NPD) study at RT. Moreover, H2O molecules are split within the structure with protons bonded to the axial oxygens of the InO6 octahedra, and with OH units occupying the interstitial space. Electrical Conductivity measurements were made. The dc conductivity was measured under different oxygen partial pressures for both Ba-doped compounds at 600 °C and 800 °C showing mixed ionic and p-type electronic behavior at different oxygen partial pressures but with conductivities of the order of ≈10−4 (S cm−1), far below the conductivities values of the oxide electrodes used in SOFCs. To analyze the nature of the majority charge carrier, ac impedance spectroscopy (IS) was applied. In the temperature range 500-900 °C, La1.2Sr0.6Ba0.2InO4+δ oxide exhibits a conductivity improvement with respect to La1.2Sr0.8InO4+δ. Temperature-dependent NPD data show at 600 °C and 800 °C the presence of oxygen vacancies at the axial octahedral positions as well as interstitial oxygen, favoring a mixed conduction mechanism for oxide ions, which may account for the enhancement of the transport properties. The present result endorses the validity of this design procedure and supports K2NiF4-related compounds as promising candidates for solid-oxide electrolytes.Fil: Troncoso, L..     A Self-Learning Methodology for Epileptic Seizure Detection with Minimally Supervised Edge Labeling

    Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders and affects over 65 million people worldwide. Despite the continuing advances in anti-epileptic treatments, one third of the epilepsy patients live with drug resistant seizures. Besides, the mortality rate among epileptic patients is 2 – 3 times higher than in the matching group of the general population. Wearable devices offer a promising solution for the detection of seizures in real time so as to alert family and caregivers to provide immediate assistance to the patient. However, in order for the detection system to be reliable, a considerable amount of labeled data is needed to train it. Labeling epilepsy data is a costly and time-consuming process that requires manual inspection and annotation of electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings by medical experts. In this paper, we present a self-learning methodology for epileptic seizure detection without medical supervision. We propose a minimally-supervised algorithm for automatic labeling of seizures in order to generate personalized training data. We demonstrate that the median deviation of the labels from the ground truth is only 10.1 seconds or, equivalently, less than 1% of the signal length. Moreover, we show that training a real-time detection algorithm with data labeled by our algorithm produces a degradation of less than 2.5% in comparison to training it with data labeled by medical experts. We evaluated our methodology on a wearable platform and achieved a lifetime of 2.59 days on a single battery charge

    Conformational Isomerization Involving Conserved Proline Residues Modulates Oligomerization of the NS1 Interferon Response Inhibitor from the Syncytial Respiratory Virus

    Interferon response suppression by the respiratory syncytial virus relies on two unique nonstructural proteins, NS1 and NS2, that interact with cellular partners through high-order complexes. We hypothesized that two conserved proline residues, P81 and P67, participate in the conformational change leading to oligomerization. We found that the molecular dynamics of NS1 show a highly mobile C-terminal helix, which becomes rigid upon in silico replacement of P81. A soluble oligomerization pathway into regular spherical structures at low ionic strengths competes with an aggregation pathway at high ionic strengths with an increase in temperature. P81A requires higher temperatures to oligomerize and has a small positive effect on aggregation, while P67A is largely prone to aggregation. Chemical denaturation shows a first transition, involving a high fluorescence and ellipticity change corresponding to both a conformational change and substantial effects on the environment of its single tryptophan, that is strongly destabilized by P67A but stabilized by P81A. The subsequent global cooperative unfolding corresponding to the main β-sheet core is not affected by the proline mutations. Thus, a clear link exists between the effect of P81 and P67 on the stability of the first transition and oligomerization/aggregation. Interestingly, both P67 and P81 are located far away in space and sequence from the C-terminal helix, indicating a marked global structural dynamics. This provides a mechanism for modulating the oligomerization of NS1 by unfolding of a weak helix that exposes hydrophobic surfaces, linked to the participation of NS1 in multiprotein complexes.Fil: Conci, Julieta.     Shade delays flowering in Medicago sativa

    Shade intolerant plants respond to the decrease in the red (R) to far-red light (FR) ratio (R:FR) occurring under shade by elongating stems and petioles and re-positioning leaves, in a race to out-compete neighbors for the sunlight resource. In some annual species, these shade-avoidance responses (SAS) are accompanied by the early induction of flowering. Anticipated flowering is viewed as a strategy to set seeds before the resources become severely limiting. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms of SAS in perennial forage crops like alfalfa (Medicago sativa). To study SAS in alfalfa, we exposed alfalfa plants to simulated shade by supplementing with FR. Low R:FR produced a classical SAS, such as increased internode and petiole length but, unexpectedly, delayed flowering. To understand the molecular mechanisms involved in uncoupling SAS from early flowering, we used a transcriptomic approach. SAS were likely mediated by increased expression of msPIF3 and msHB2 in low R:FR. Constitutive expression of these genes in Arabidopsis led to SAS, including early flowering, strongly suggesting their roles are conserved. Delayed flowering was likely to be mediated by the downregulation of msSPL3, which promotes flowering in both Arabidopsis and alfalfa. Shade-delayed flowering in alfalfa may be important to extend the vegetative phase under sub-optimal light conditions and thus assure the accumulation of reserves necessary to resume growth after the next season.
