    Query Load Balancing by Caching Search Results in Peer-to-Peer Information Retrieval Networks

    For peer-to-peer web search engines it is important to keep the delay between receiving a query and providing search results within an acceptable range for the end user. How to achieve this remains an open challenge. One way to reduce delays is by caching search results for queries and allowing peers to access each others cache. In this paper we explore the limitations of search result caching in large-scale peer-to-peer information retrieval networks by simulating such networks with increasing levels of realism. We find that cache hit ratios of at least thirty-three percent are attainable

    Query-Based Sampling using Snippets

    Query-based sampling is a commonly used approach to model the content of servers. Conventionally, queries are sent to a server and the documents in the search results returned are downloaded in full as representation of the serverā€™s content. We present an approach that uses the document snippets in the search results as samples instead of downloading the entire documents. We show this yields equal or better modeling performance for the same bandwidth consumption depending on collection characteristics, like document length distribution and homogeneity. Query-based sampling using snippets is a useful approach for real-world systems, since it requires no extra operations beyond exchanging queries and search results

    Peer to Peer Information Retrieval: An Overview

    Peer-to-peer technology is widely used for file sharing. In the past decade a number of prototype peer-to-peer information retrieval systems have been developed. Unfortunately, none of these have seen widespread real- world adoption and thus, in contrast with file sharing, information retrieval is still dominated by centralised solutions. In this paper we provide an overview of the key challenges for peer-to-peer information retrieval and the work done so far. We want to stimulate and inspire further research to overcome these challenges. This will open the door to the development and large-scale deployment of real-world peer-to-peer information retrieval systems that rival existing centralised client-server solutions in terms of scalability, performance, user satisfaction and freedom

    The Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. However,the essential task of finding information is dominated by a handful of large centralised search engines. In this thesis we study an alternative to this approach. Instead of using large data centres, we propose using the machines that we all use every day: our desktop, laptop and tablet computers, to build a peer-to-peer web search engine. We provide a definition of the associated research field: peer-to-peer information retrieval. We examine what separates it from related fields, give an overview of the work done so far and provide an economic perspective on peer-to-peer search. Furthermore, we introduce our own architecture for peer-to-peer search systems, inspired by BitTorrent. Distributing the task of providing search results for queries introduces the problem of query routing: a query needs to be sent to a peer that can provide relevant search results. We investigate how the content of peers can be represented so that queries can be directed to the best ones in terms of relevance. While cooperative peers can provide their own representation, the content of uncooperative peers can be accessed only through a search interface and thus they can not actively provide a description of themselves. We look into representing these uncooperative peers by probing their search interface to construct a representation. Finally, the capacity of the machines in peer-to-peer networks differs considerably, making it challenging to provide search results quickly. To address this, we present an approach where copies of search results for previous queries are retained at peers and used to serve future requests and show participation can be incentivised using reputations. There are still problems to be solved before a real-world peer-to-peer web search engine can be built. This thesis provides a starting point for this ambitious goal and also provides a solid basis for reasoning about peer-to-peer information retrieval systems in general

CV Marga Jaya (Pabrik II) selalu berusaha mengurangi pemborosan yang terjadi selama proses produksi paving/conblock. Pemborosan yang terjadi antari lain, adanya produksi berlebih, transportasi, waktu menunggu, dan cacat yang berlebih. Lean Manufacaturing merupakan pendekatan yang bertujuan untuk merampingkan proses dengan mengurangi pemborosan yang terjadi selama proses produksi. Pendekatan konsep lean manufacturing dimulai dengan membuat big picture mapping, dilanjutkan dengan waste assessment model (WAM), diagram cause and effects, value stream analysis tools (VALSAT), usulan perbaikan waste yang terjadi, dan pembuatan descrete event simulation (DES). Hasil yang didapat bahwa waktu menunggu yang terjadi diperbaiki dengan menggunakan conveyor, produksi berlebih yang terjadi diperbaiki dengan melakukan perencanaan produksi, dan cacat berlebih yang terjadi diperbaiki dengan menggunakan 5W+1H dengan sebelumnya menggunakan konsep lean six sigma dan didapat nilai sigma sebesar 4,31 sigma. Simulasi proses menunjukkan dengan mengurangi pemborosan, kemampuan produksi naik 15,36% (penjemuran 30 hari) dan 147,20% (penjemuran 7 hari)

    Symbiont-specific responses to environmental cues in a threesome lichen symbiosis

    Photosymbiodemes are a special case of lichen symbiosis where one lichenized fungus engages in symbiosis with two different photosynthetic partners, a cyanobacterium and a green alga, to develop two distinctly looking photomorphs. We compared gene expression of thallus sectors of the photosymbiodeme-forming lichen Peltigera britannica containing cyanobacterial photobionts with thallus sectors with both green algal and cyanobacterial photobionts and investigated differential gene expression at different temperatures representing mild and putatively stressful conditions. First, we quantified photobiont-mediated differences in fungal gene expression. Second, because of known ecological differences between photomorphs, we investigated symbiont-specific responses in gene expression to temperature increases. Photobiont-mediated differences in fungal gene expression could be identified, with upregulation of distinct biological processes in the different morphs, showing that interaction with specific symbiosis partners profoundly impacts fungal gene expression. Furthermore, high temperatures expectedly led to an upregulation of genes involved in heat shock responses in all organisms in whole transcriptome data and to an increased expression of genes involved in photosynthesis in both photobiont types at 15 and 25 degrees C. The fungus and the cyanobacteria exhibited thermal stress responses already at 15 degrees C, the green algae mainly at 25 degrees C, demonstrating symbiont-specific responses to environmental cues and symbiont-specific ecological optima

    Evaluating deformation behavior of a TBC-System during thermal gradient mechanical fatigue by means of high energy X-ray diffraction

    Applications of TBC-systems involve complex thermal mechanical loading pattern including transient thermal gradients across the coated system, which result in multiaxial stresses and stress gradients affecting the damage behavior. In an ongoing research, starting more than 10 years ago, the authors developed laboratory test facilities for evaluating the damage behavior of TBC-systems for gas turbine blades in aeroengines under realistic thermal mechanical loading conditions [1]. Fatigue tests involving thermal gradients have been conducted and damage behavior in dependence of load pattern and pre heat treatment has been intensively investigated on TBC-systems comprising a partially yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) topcoat and a MCrAlY bond coat both applied by electron physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) onto nickel based super alloys serving as substrate [2]. Numerical analyses by means of FE-calculations did provide hypotheses explaining the observed damage behavior [3], but even though the results are plausible they did depend on reasonable assumptions on materials properties since reliable data on the properties of the thin coating layers are still lacking, especially for high temperatures. High energy X-ray diffraction can provide the requested information since it is possible to achieve information on the local deformation processes in each layer with high spatial resolution, and short acquisition times allow for in situ investigation of time dependent deformation processes. A new test facility based on concepts after [1] for cyclic thermal loading of tubular specimens and applying a controlled thermal gradient across the coated specimenā€™s wall has been developed for implementation into an electro-mechanical test machine at the advanced photon source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. A precision positioning rig allows for exact Āµm-positioning of the entire test machine with respect to the focused X-ray beam, and X-ray diffraction patterns were taken using a 2D detector, giving accurate 360Ā° lattice parameter data [4]. Tests have been performed with varying thermal and mechanical load schemata intending to determine material properties from the respective strain response. The beam energy was 65 keV, and throughout all experiments the beam scanned through the coating layers with a window and step size of 30 Āµm. Strain data were acquired in plane parallel to the specimenā€™s length axis and out of plane. Results of the strain data evaluation will be presented and discussed. Exemplary results are: - Elastic properties of the YSZ showed a gradient across the coating thickness reflecting the microstructure gradient of the YSZ resulting from the EB-PVD process. - The YSZ strain was ā€“ below the deposition temperature - in plane compressive and out of plane tensile, which is a consequence of (i) the higher thermal expansion coefficient of YSZ with respect to the substrate and (ii) the cylindrical specimen geometry with the YSZ at the outer surface.
