    Eye and hand movements during reconstruction of spatial memory

    © 2012 a Pion publicationRecent behavioural and biological evidence indicates common mechanisms serving working memory and attention (e.g., Awh et al, 2006 Neuroscience 139 201-208). This study explored the role of spatial attention and visual search in an adapted Corsi spatial memory task. Eye movements and touch responses were recorded from participants who recalled locations (signalled by colour or shape change) from an array presented either simultaneously or sequentially. The time delay between target presentation and recall (0, 5, or 10 s) and the number of locations to be remembered (2-5) were also manipulated. Analysis of the response phase revealed subjects were less accurate (touch data) and fixated longer (eye data) when responding to sequentially presented targets suggesting higher cognitive effort. Fixation duration on target at recall was also influenced by whether spatial location was initially signalled by colour or shape change. Finally, we found that the sequence tasks encouraged longer fixations on the signalled targets than simultaneous viewing during encoding, but no difference was observed during recall. We conclude that the attentional manipulations (colour/shape) mainly affected the eye movement parameters, whereas the memory manipulation (sequential versus simultaneous, number of items) mainly affected the performance of the hand during recall, and thus the latter is more important for ascertaining if an item is remembered or forgotten. In summary, the nature of the stimuli that is used and how it is presented play key roles in determining subject performance and behaviour during spatial memory tasks

    Photodissociation and the Morphology of HI in Galaxies

    Young massive stars produce Far-UV photons which dissociate the molecular gas on the surfaces of their parent molecular clouds. Of the many dissociation products which result from this ``back-reaction'', atomic hydrogen \HI is one of the easiest to observe through its radio 21-cm hyperfine line emission. In this paper I first review the physics of this process and describe a simplified model which has been developed to permit an approximate computation of the column density of photodissociated \HI which appears on the surfaces of molecular clouds. I then review several features of the \HI morphology of galaxies on a variety of length scales and describe how photodissociation might account for some of these observations.     Visual Responses in Mice Lacking Critical Components of All Known Retinal Phototransduction Cascades

    The mammalian visual system relies upon light detection by outer-retinal rod/cone photoreceptors and melanopsin-expressing retinal ganglion cells. Gnat1(-/-); Cnga3(-/-); Opn4(-/-) mice lack critical elements of each of these photoreceptive mechanisms via targeted disruption of genes encoding rod alpha transducin (Gnat1); the cone-specific alpha 3 cyclic nucleotide gated channel subunit (Cnga3); and melanopsin (Opn4). Although assumed blind, we show here that these mice retain sufficiently widespread retinal photoreception to drive a reproducible flash electroretinogram (ERG). The threshold sensitivity of this ERG is similar to that of cone-based responses, however it is lost under light adapted conditions. Its spectral efficiency is consistent with that of rod opsin, but not cone opsins or melanopsin, indicating that it originates with light absorption by the rod pigment. The TKO light response survives intravitreal injection of U73122 (a phospholipase C antagonist), but is inhibited by a missense mutation of cone alpha transducin (Gnat2(cpfl3)), suggesting Gnat2-dependence. Visual responses in TKO mice extend beyond the retina to encompass the lateral margins of the lateral geniculate nucleus and components of the visual cortex. Our data thus suggest that a Gnat1-independent phototransduction mechanism downstream of rod opsin can support relatively widespread responses in the mammalian visual system. This anomalous rod opsin-based vision should be considered in experiments relying upon Gnat1 knockout to silence rod phototransduction

    Expressions for forces and torques in molecular simulations using rigid bodies

    Expressions for intermolecular forces and torques, derived from pair potentials between rigid non-spherical units, are presented. The aim is to give compact and clear expressions, which are easily generalised, and which minimise the risk of error in writing molecular dynamics simulation programs. It is anticipated that these expressions will be useful in the simulation of liquid crystalline systems, and in coarse-grained modelling of macromolecules

    Managing chronic conditions in a South African primary care context: exploring the applicability of Brief Motivational Interviewing.

    Background: Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) is an approach to motivating behaviour change in general health care settings. The relevance and applicability of BMI has not been fully assessed in low- or middle-income country settings. This study explored the application of BMI by general practitioners (GPs) in a public sector primary care setting in Cape Town, South Africa. Methods: How BMI should be adapted and applied was explored by means of a cooperative inquiry group of GPs. This participatory action research involved four action-reflection cycles over a five-month period during which GPs were trained to use BMI skills in their practice and to document and reflect on their experience. Results: GPs found the emphasis on self-evaluation, personal choice and control particularly useful. Skills in open questioning, exchanging information carefully, assessing ambivalence and readiness to change were also helpful. They had mixed experiences with skills for agenda setting and reducing resistance. The use of specific scaling questions and decision balance sheets were not useful. Conclusions: BMI has great potential, as the skills learnt were mostly useful and the process had benefits for the participants. If the full potential of BMI is to be realised, the content will need to be adapted to local clinical conditions. BMI needs to be taught using a participatory educational style and its implementation must be accompanied by support from colleagues and management. Future research on this issue should evaluate the process of implementing BMI skills in different primary care settings and sustaining any positive changes that may occur.     Are forwards and backwards digit recall the same? A dual task study of digit recall

    There is some debate surrounding the cognitive resources underlying backwards digit recall. Some researchers consider it to differ from forwards digit recall due to the involvement of executive control, while others suggest that backwards recall involves visuo-spatial resources. Five experiments therefore investigated the role of executive-attentional and visuo-spatial resources in both forwards and backwards digit recall. In the first, participants completed visuo-spatial 0-back and 2-back tasks during the encoding of information to be remembered. The concurrent tasks did not differentially disrupt performance on backwards digit recall relative to forwards digit recall. Experiment 2 shifted concurrent load to the recall phase instead, and in this case revealed a larger effect of both tasks on backwards recall relative to forwards recall, suggesting that backwards recall may draw on additional resources during the recall phase and that these resources are visuo-spatial in nature. Experiments 3 and 4 then further investigated the role of visual processes in forwards and backwards recall using dynamic visual noise (DVN). In Experiment 3 DVN was presented during encoding of information to be remembered, and had no effect upon performance. However, in Experiment 4 it was presented during the recall phase, and the results provided evidence of a role for visual imagery in backwards digit recall. These results were replicated in Experiment 5 in which the same list length was used for forwards and backwards recall tasks. The findings are discussed in terms of both theoretical and practical implications

    Evidence for two attentional components in visual working memory

    How does executive attentional control contribute to memory for sequences of visual objects, and what does this reveal about storage and processing in working memory? Three experiments examined the impact of a concurrent executive load (backward counting) on memory for sequences of individually presented visual objects. Experiments 1 and 2 found disruptive concurrent load effects of equivalent magnitude on memory for shapes, colors, and colored shape conjunctions (as measured by single-probe recognition). Crucially, these effects were only present for items 1 and 2 in a 3-item sequence; the final item was always impervious to this disruption. This pattern of findings was precisely replicated in Experiment 3 using a cued verbal recall measure of shape-color binding, with error analysis providing additional insights concerning attention-related loss of early-sequence items. These findings indicate an important role for executive processes in maintaining representations of earlier encountered stimuli in an active form alongside privileged storage of the most recent stimulus

    Exploring the sentence advantage in working memory: Insights from serial recall and recognition

    Immediate serial recall of sentences has been shown to be superior to that of unrelated words. This study was designed to further explore how this effect might emerge in recall and to establish whether it also extends to serial recognition, a different form of response task that has relatively reduced output requirements. Using auditory or visual presentation of sequences, we found a substantial advantage for sentences over lists in serial recall, an effect shown on measures of recall accuracy, order, intrusion, and omission errors and reflected in transposition gradients. In contrast however, recognition memory based on a standard change detection paradigm gave only weak and inconsistent evidence for a sentence superiority effect. However, when a more sensitive staircase procedure imported from psychophysics was used, a clear sentence advantage was found although the effect sizes were smaller than those observed in serial recall. These findings suggest that sentence recall benefits from automatic processes that utilise long-term knowledge across encoding, storage, and retrieval

    Visual responses in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus at early stages of retinal degeneration in rd¹ PDE6β mice

    Inherited retinal degenerations encompass a wide range of diseases that result in the death of rod and cone photoreceptors, eventually leading to irreversible blindness. Low vision survives at early stages of degeneration, at which point it could rely on residual populations of rod/cone photoreceptors as well as the inner retinal photoreceptor, melanopsin. To date, the impact of partial retinal degeneration on visual responses in the primary visual thalamus (dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, dLGN) remains unknown, as does their relative reliance on surviving rod and cone photoreceptors vs. melanopsin. To answer these questions, we recorded visually evoked responses in the dLGN of anesthetized rd1 mice using in vivo electrophysiology at an age (3–5 wk) at which cones are partially degenerate and rods are absent. We found that excitatory (ON) responses to light had lower amplitude and longer latency in rd1 mice compared with age-matched visually intact controls; however, contrast sensitivity and spatial receptive field size were largely unaffected at this early stage of degeneration. Responses were retained when those wavelengths to which melanopsin is most sensitive were depleted, indicating that they were driven primarily by surviving cones. Inhibitory responses appeared absent in the rd1 thalamus, as did light-evoked gamma oscillations in firing. This description of fundamental features of the dLGN visual response at this intermediate stage of retinal degeneration provides a context for emerging attempts to restore vision by introducing ectopic photoreception to the degenerate retina
