    Flow quality studies of the NASA Lewis Research Center 8- by 6-foot supersonic/9- by 15-foot low speed wind tunnel

    A series of studies were conducted to determine the existing flow quality in the NASA Lewis 8 by 6 Foot Supersonic/9 by 15 Foot Low speed Wind Tunnel. The information gathered from these studies was used to determine the types and designs of flow manipulators which can be installed to improve overall tunnel flow quality and efficiency. Such manipulators include honeycomb flow straighteners, turbulence reduction screens, corner turning vanes, and acoustic treatments. The types of measurements, instrumentation, and results obtained from experiments conducted at several locations throughout the tunnel loop are described

    The Transition between Nonorthogonal Polarization Modes in PSR B2016+28 at 1404 MHz

    Polarization observations of the radio emission from PSR B2016+28 at 1404 MHz reveal properties that are consistent with two, very different, interpretations of the pulsar's viewing geometry. The pulsar's average polarization properties show a rapid change in position angle (PA) near the pulse center, suggesting that the observer's sightline nearly intersects the star's magnetic pole. But single pulse, polarization observations of the pulsar show nearly orthogonal modes of polarization following relatively flat and parallel PA trajectories across the pulse, suggesting that the sightline is far from the pole. Additionally, PA histograms reveal a "modal connecting bridge", of unknown origin, joining the modal PA trajectories over much of the pulse and following the rapid PA change shown in the average data. The nonorthogonality of polarization modes is incorporated in a statistical model of radio polarization to account for the deviations from mode orthogonality that are observed in the pulsar. The model is used to interpret the rapid PA change and modal connecting bridge as a longitudinally-resolved transition between modes of nonorthogonal polarization. Thus, the modal PA trajectories are argued to reflect the pulsar's true viewing geometry. This interpretation is consistent with the pulsar's morphological classification, preserves the Radhakrishnan & Cooke model of pulsar radio emission, and avoids the complication that the modal connecting bridge might be produced by some other emission mechanism. The statistical model's ability to simulate the rich variety of polarization properties observed in the emission lends additional support to the model's applicability and its underlying assumption that the polarization modes occur simultaneously.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Exit plane H2O concentration measurements correlated with OH PLIF near-injector mixing measurements for scramjet flows

    Mixing and combusting high enthalpy flows, similar to those encountered in scramjet engines, were investigated using a shock tunnel to produce the flow in conjunction with non-intrusive optical diagnostics which monitored the performance of two injector configurations. The shock tunnel is configured to produce Mach 3 flow and stagnation enthalpies corresponding to flight equivalent Mach numbers between 7 and 11. A pulsed hydrogen injection capability and interchangeable injector blocks provide a means of examining high speed, high enthalpy reacting flows. Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of OH molecules in the near injector region produced images which show the combusting and mixing zones for the reacting flow. Line-of-sight exit plane measurement of water concentration and temperature were used to provide a unique method of monitoring exit plane products. These results demonstrated that a velocity matched axial injection system produced a fuel jet that lifted off the floor of the duct. Mixing was observed to increase for this system as a velocity mismatch was introduced. Comparison of exit plane water concentrations for a wall jet injection system and a velocity matched injection system indicated similar mixing performance but an accurate pressure measurement is necessary to further validate the result. In addition, exit plane measurements indicated an approximate steady-state condition was achieved during the 1 to 2 ms test times

    In a series of three previous papers, formulation and specifics of the representation of World Coordinate Transformations in FITS data have been presented. This fourth paper deals with encoding time. Time on all scales and precisions known in astronomical datasets is to be described in an unambiguous, complete, and self-consistent manner. Employing the well--established World Coordinate System (WCS) framework, and maintaining compatibility with the FITS conventions that are currently in use to specify time, the standard is extended to describe rigorously the time coordinate. World coordinate functions are defined for temporal axes sampled linearly and as specified by a lookup table. The resulting standard is consistent with the existing FITS WCS standards and specifies a metadata set that achieves the aims enunciated above.Comment: FITS WCS Paper IV: Time. 27 pages, 11 table

    High Order Entropy-Constrained Residual VQ for Lossless Compression of Images

    High order entropy coding is a powerful technique for exploiting high order statistical dependencies. However, the exponentially high complexity associated with such a method often discourages its use. In this paper, an entropy-constrained residual vector quantization method is proposed for lossless compression of images. The method consists of first quantizing the input image using a high order entropy-constrained residual vector quantizer and then coding the residual image using a first order entropy coder. The distortion measure used in the entropy-constrained optimization is essentially the first order entropy of the residual image. Experimental results show very competitive performance
