    Economic impact of growing Phomopsis-resistant lupins

    The planting of Phomopsis-resistant lupins will increase net farm income. They will also alter the traditional blend of pastures and cropping, depending on grain and wool prices. In mixed farming areas of Western Australia\u27s southern wheatbelt, they will allow more land to be sown to lupins rather than cereals on farms in which the lack of sheep feed over summer severely restricts wool production. The benefits of Phompsis-resistant lupins arise from a reduction in sheep deaths due to lupinosis, a longer safe grazing period (free from lupinosis) on lupin stubbles, a decrease in the need for supplementary sheep feed over summer, improvements in sheep body weight (and possibly wool growth), and increases in harvested gran yield. Farmers should prepare now for this major shift in farm management

    Detecting Change: Observations of Temperature and Precipitation Across Virginiaā€™s Climate Divisions

    Modern global climate change is primarily attributable to human activities and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Climate change impacts span a range of sectors, including agriculture, forestry, public health, and water resource management. The Commonwealth of Virginia has already and will continue to deal with many of these impacts, yet lacks concentrated effort to detect, document, and adapt to local climate changes. This study documents observed changes in temperature and precipitation across Virginiaā€™s six climate divisions. Mean seasonal anomalies of minimum temperature, maximum temperature, and precipitation from 1986 to 2016 are examined relative to a long-term 1895-2000 baseline. Additionally, the study assesses and reports full-record (1895-2016) trends for each climate division. Results demonstrate warming across all climate divisions in Virginia, particularly during the winter season (December, January, and February). Precipitation changes vary across the Commonwealth and seasons. Drying conditions, particularly in the Eastern and Western Piedmont, are noteworthy during the summer, while wetter conditions prevail in the spring and autumn. Former Governor Kaineā€™s 2008 Climate Action Plan and subsequent 2016 update by Governor McAuliffeā€™s administration called for a Virginia climate information clearinghouse where the public and decision-makers could efficiently access valuable weather and climate information.     Garbage collection auto-tuning for Java MapReduce on Multi-Cores

    MapReduce has been widely accepted as a simple programming pattern that can form the basis for efficient, large-scale, distributed data processing. The success of the MapReduce pattern has led to a variety of implementations for different computational scenarios. In this paper we present MRJ, a MapReduce Java framework for multi-core architectures. We evaluate its scalability on a four-core, hyperthreaded Intel Core i7 processor, using a set of standard MapReduce benchmarks. We investigate the significant impact that Java runtime garbage collection has on the performance and scalability of MRJ. We propose the use of memory management auto-tuning techniques based on machine learning. With our auto-tuning approach, we are able to achieve MRJ performance within 10% of optimal on 75% of our benchmark tests

    Evaporation of Lennard-Jones Fluids

    Evaporation and condensation at a liquid/vapor interface are ubiquitous interphase mass and energy transfer phenomena that are still not well understood. We have carried out large scale molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluids composed of monomers, dimers, or trimers to investigate these processes with molecular detail. For LJ monomers in contact with a vacuum, the evaporation rate is found to be very high with significant evaporative cooling and an accompanying density gradient in the liquid domain near the liquid/vapor interface. Increasing the chain length to just dimers significantly reduces the evaporation rate. We confirm that mechanical equilibrium plays a key role in determining the evaporation rate and the density and temperature profiles across the liquid/vapor interface. The velocity distributions of evaporated molecules and the evaporation and condensation coefficients are measured and compared to the predictions of an existing model based on kinetic theory of gases. Our results indicate that for both monatomic and polyatomic molecules, the evaporation and condensation coefficients are equal when systems are not far from equilibrium and smaller than one, and decrease with increasing temperature. For the same reduced temperature T/TcT/T_c, where TcT_c is the critical temperature, these two coefficients are higher for LJ dimers and trimers than for monomers, in contrast to the traditional viewpoint that they are close to unity for monatomic molecules and decrease for polyatomic molecules. Furthermore, data for the two coefficients collapse onto a master curve when plotted against a translational length ratio between the liquid and vapor phase.Comment: revised version, 15 pages, 15 figures, to appear in J.     New Lithium Measurements in Metal-Poor Stars

    We provide *lambda*6708 Li 1 measurements in 37 metal-poor stars, most of which are poorly-studied or have no previous measurements, from high-resolution and high-S/N spectroscopy obtained with the McDonald Observatory 2.1m and 2.7m telescopes. The typical line strength and abundance uncertainties, confirmed by the thinness of the Spite plateau manifested by our data and by comparison with previous measurements, are <=4 mAng and <=0.07-0.10 dex respectively. Two rare moderately metal-poor solar-Teff dwarfs, HIP 36491 and 40613, with significantly depleted but still detectable Li are identified; future light element determinations in the more heavily depeleted HIP 40613 may provide constraints on the Li depletion mechanism acting in this star. We note two moderately metal-poor and slightly evolved stars, HIP 105888 and G265-39, that appear to be analogs of the low-Li moderately metal-poor subgiant HD 201889. Preliminary abundance analysis of G 265-39 finds no abnormalities that suggest the low Li content is associated with AGB mass-transfer or deep mixing and p-capture.     A Search for OH Megamasers at z > 0.1. I. Preliminary Results

    We present the preliminary results of a survey for OH megamasers underway at the Arecibo Observatory. The goals of the survey are to calibrate the luminosity function of OH megamasers to the low-redshift galaxy merger rate (0.1 < z < 0.2), and to use the enhanced sample of OH megamasers provided by the survey to study OH megamaser environments, engines, lifetimes, and structure. The survey should double the known OH megamaser sample to roughly 100 objects. Survey results will be presented in installments to facilitate community access to the data. Here we report the discovery of 11 OH megamasers and one OH absorber, and include upper limits on the isotropic 1667 MHz OH line luminosity of 53 other luminous infrared galaxies at z > 0.1. The new megamasers show a wide range of spectral properties, but are consistent with the extant set of 55 previously reported objects, only 8 of which have z > 0.1.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Discontinuous Molecular Dynamics for Semi-Flexible and Rigid Bodies

    A general framework for performing event-driven simulations of systems with semi-flexible or rigid bodies interacting under impulsive torques and forces is outlined. Two different approaches are presented. In the first, the dynamics and interaction rules are derived from Lagrangian mechanics in the presence of constraints. This approach is most suitable when the body is composed of relatively few point masses or is semi-flexible. In the second method, the equations of rigid bodies are used to derive explicit analytical expressions for the free evolution of arbitrary rigid molecules and to construct a simple scheme for computing interaction rules. Efficient algorithms for the search for the times of interaction events are designed in this context, and the handling of missed interaction events is discussed.Comment: 16 pages, double column revte

    A New H I Survey of Active Galaxies

    We have conducted a new Arecibo survey for H I emission for 113 galaxies with broad-line (type 1) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to recession velocities as high as 35,000 km/s. The primary aim of the study is to obtain sensitive H I spectra for a well-defined, uniformly selected sample of active galaxies that have estimates of their black hole masses in order to investigate correlations between H I properties and the characteristics of the AGNs. H I emission was detected in 66 out of the 101 (65%) objects with spectra uncorrupted by radio frequency interference, among which 45 (68%) have line profiles with adequate signal-to-noise ratio and sufficiently reliable inclination corrections to yield robust deprojected rotational velocities. This paper presents the basic survey products, including an atlas of H I spectra, measurements of H I flux, line width, profile asymmetry, optical images, optical spectroscopic parameters, as well as a summary of a number of derived properties pertaining to the host galaxies. To enlarge our primary sample, we also assemble all previously published H I measurements of type 1 AGNs for which can can estimate black hole masses, which total an additional 53 objects. The final comprehensive compilation of 154 broad-line active galaxies, by far the largest sample ever studied, forms the basis of our companion paper, which uses the H I database to explore a number of properties of the AGN host galaxies.Comment: To appear in ApJS; 31 pages.
