La2O3/Co3O4 nanocomposite modified screen printed electrode for voltammetric determination of sertraline

    No full text
La2O3/Co3O4 nanocomposite was synthesized and then used for the modification of screen-printed electrode (SPE) prior to the electrochemical determination of sertraline. A significant increment in peak current response was observed and peak potential also shifted towards less positive potentials showing the facilitated oxidation procedure at surface of modified SPE (La2O3/ /Co3O4/SPE). The quantitative determination of sertraline was carried out by using different pulse voltammetry and the anodic peak current was found to increase with increasing sertraline concentration in the linear range of 5.0400.0 µM with limit of detection as 1.0 μM. The prepared La2O3/Co3O4/SPE has been successfully used for detecting sertraline in sertraline tablet and urine samples with excellent recoveries. © 2020 Serbian Chemical Society. Adolescent elbow osteochondral lesions following prior elbow fracture pinning

    No full text
PurposePinning of pediatric elbow fractures has been shown to be a safe procedure with a low complication profile. This study identified patients who underwent cartilage surgery for elbow osteochondral lesions or osteochondritis dissecans who had prior ipsilateral elbow pinning.MethodsRecords of patients who underwent ipsilateral cartilage surgery for osteochondritis dissecans and prior percutaneous pinning for elbow fractures were identified. Demographics were compiled and the clinical, radiographic, and surgical results were tabulated for patients with at least 1-year of follow-up from initial presentation.ResultsIn total, 6/52 (11.5%) pediatric patients from 2012 to 2021 who underwent isolated elbow osteochondritis dissecans surgery (mean age at surgery 13.4 ± 1.5 years) had a history of ipsilateral elbow pinning (mean age at surgery 6.9 ± 2.4 years). Of these, five had a history of a supracondylar fracture while one patient sustained a lateral condyle fracture. Overall, three of six patients had mechanical symptoms at presentation and three had abnormal radiographs. All patients underwent pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging and the five patients with an osteochondritis dissecans lesion <1cm2 underwent arthroscopy and microfracture while one with a 4-cm2 lesion underwent open osteochondral allograft transfer. All patients demonstrated improved motion at final follow-up and all patients were able to return to full desired activity following surgery.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that the history of elbow fracture pinning may predispose patients to future elbow chondral injuries in adolescence. Although patients appear to do well following consequent osteochondritis dissecans surgery, patients and parents may be advised of possible association of elbow pinning and elbow osteochondral lesions.Level of evidenceIII, case-control study

Uncivil behaviors in nursing education from the perspectives of nursing instructors and students: A cross-sectional study

    No full text
One of the serious concerns in nursing education is uncivil behaviors (UBs). These behaviors negatively affect both teaching and learning and result in instructor-student conflicts. Nonetheless, the data about these behaviors is minimal hence the need for a study on them. The study aimed to evaluate UBs in nursing education from the perspectives of nursing instructors and students. This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 2019 with 52 nursing instructors and 240 nursing students from Kerman, Bam, and Jiroft Universities of Medical Sciences, Iran. Data was collected using the Instructors’ Uncivil Behaviors Scale and the Students’ Uncivil Behaviors Scale and analyzed using the SPSS software (v. 22.0), independent t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Both nursing instructors and students perceived UBs at a moderate level. UBs in the learning climate dimension was the most prevalent and were experienced among both students and instructors. Due to the commonness of UBs, nursing education and healthcare authorities need to employ strategies to minimize these behaviors and reduce their effects on nursing instructors, students, and clients. © 2022 The Author(s

Thieno2,3-bpyridine amines: Synthesis and evaluation of tacrine analogs against biological activities related to Alzheimer's disease

    No full text
In search of safer tacrine analogs, various thieno2,3-bpyridine amine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory activity against cholinesterases (ChEs). Among the synthesized compounds, compounds 5e and 5d showed the highest activity towards acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, with IC50 values of 1.55 and 0.23 µM, respectively. The most active ChE inhibitors (5e and 5d) were also candidates for further complementary assays, such as kinetic and molecular docking studies as well as studies on inhibitory activity towards amyloid-beta (βA) aggregation and β-secretase 1, neuroprotectivity, and cytotoxicity against HepG2 cells. Our results indicated efficient anti-Alzheimer's activity of the synthesized compounds. © 2020 Deutsche Pharmazeutische Gesellschaf

Assessing Trustworthy AI in Times of COVID-19: Deep Learning for Predicting a Multiregional Score Conveying the Degree of Lung Compromise in COVID-19 Patients

    No full text
This article’s main contributions are twofold: 1) to demonstrate how to apply the general European Union’s High-Level Expert Group’s (EU HLEG) guidelines for trustworthy AI in practice for the domain of healthcare and 2) to investigate the research question of what does “trustworthy AI” mean at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we present the results of a post-hoc self-assessment to evaluate the trustworthiness of an AI system for predicting a multiregional score conveying the degree of lung compromise in COVID-19 patients, developed and verified by an interdisciplinary team with members from academia, public hospitals, and industry in time of pandemic. The AI system aims to help radiologists to estimate and communicate the severity of damage in a patient’s lung from Chest X-rays. It has been experimentally deployed in the radiology department of the ASST Spedali Civili clinic in Brescia, Italy, since December 2020 during pandemic time. The methodology we have applied for our post-hoc assessment, called Z-Inspection®, uses sociotechnical scenarios to identify ethical, technical, and domain-specific issues in the use of the AI system in the context of the pandemic.Ethics & Philosophy of Technolog

Nonlinear Pushover Analysis of Concrete Infilled Frames

    No full text
[[abstract]]Six reinforced concrete frames with or without masonry infi lls were constructed and tested under horizontal cyclic loads. All six frames had identical details in which the transverse reinforcement in columns was provided by rectangular hoops that did not meet current ACI specifi cations for ductile frames. For comparison purposes, the columns in three of these frames were jacketed by carbon-fi ber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) sheets to avoid possible shear failure. A nonlinear pushover analysis, in which the force-deformation relationships of individual elements were developed based on ACI 318, FEMA 356, and Chen’s model, was carried out for these frames and compared to test results. Both the failure mechanisms and impact of infills on the behaviors of these frames were examined in the study. Conclusions from the present analysis provide structural engineers with valuable information for evaluation and design of infi lled concrete frame building structures.[[notice]]補正完畢[[journaltype]]國外[[incitationindex]]EI[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]紙本[[countrycodes]]US
