Flippin\u27 Medicine: Reflection and Action in Medical Education

Historically, medicine has centered around a single model: that of the white, cisgender, heterosexual, abled, middle-class male body. While it is well known that patients of diverse identities often present differently, medical education continues to use this dominant, normative model as the standard for all patients while ignoring marginalized groups in their descriptions. Flippin\u27 Medicine reflects on the prevalence of normative models in medicine, as well as the ways in which these models slip past the notice of providers with privileged identities. The author then describes the process behind creating a resource, titled Flipped Medicine: A Guide to Deconstructing the Normative Patient Model, that aims to teach providers how to identify and deconstruct normative models in medical education by centering the experiences of marginalized patients

Inhabiting Sore Butt Cracks : Queering the U.S. Long-Term Care System

In the face of a failing long-term care system, the author positions a queer theoretical lens as a potential source of creativity and empathy to help us build a care system that supports the dignity and personhood of all patients. The comedic work of a long-term care patient, Youtuber Clay-The-Comedian, is analyzed through a queer-theories lens as a new approach to long-term care that celebrates the personhood of all types of bodies, while also never diminishing the often difficult reality that folks in need of care face. This queer rhetoric engages with the messy, embodied experiences of patients to develop a remedy to our broken system, wherein the inevitable period of disability between old age and death is recognized as still valuable. Black Lips Don\u27t Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique of Discriminatory Language in Medical Education

This paper examines race and gender inequities in healthcare as it pertains to the unequal presentation of descriptors of illness in medical textbooks. The author adopts a womanist perspective to criticize the use of the white male body as the standard for all patients, which causes signs and symptoms in women and people of color to be dismissed as less important. Following an analysis of normalizing language in current medical texts as well as its consequences for patients, the author calls for a system-wide shift to more inclusive, intersectional medical education that not only acknowledges differences among patient groups, but also places diversity in equal conversation with the presumed norm

Relationship Counseling for the U.S.: Understanding White America\u27s Role in Asian American Experiences

This paper explores the relationship between White Americans and Asian Americans in an effort to discover the root of the difficulties that first and second generation Asian Americans experience while attempting to integrate into American society. Through an analysis of perspectives from Asian American literature as well as historical and current events, it highlights the racist systems that are ingrained in our everyday lives, continuously reminding Asian Americans that they are out of place in their own country. It concludes with a discussion of White America\u27s necessary role in dismantling these systems, and offers strategies to create a more welcoming environment for ethnic minorities

Conditional moments of the breakthrough curves of kinetically sorbing solute in heterogeneous porous media using multirate mass transfer models for sorption and desorption

A methodology is presented for evaluating the temporal moments of solutes undergoing linear rate‐limited mass transfer processes based on a Lagrangian approach to solute transport in heterogeneous media. The temporal moments of sorbing solutes are written as a function of those of conservative tracers. The general continuous diffusion rate model that has recently appeared in the hydrologic literature is used to model the rate‐limited mass transfer processes. The methodology is also applied to desorption from an initially uniformly contaminated aquifer, and the concentration expected value and variance are found quasi‐analytically. The conditional temporal moments of sorbing solutes can be written as a function of the conditional moments of conservative tracers. Appropriate Methodologies to Better Measure Consumer Preferences for Postal Services

This report summarises work undertaken testing the use of stated preference discrete choice experiments to measure consumer preferences for postal services. It discusses the importance of understanding and quantifying consumer priorities in the postal sector and presents different methods used for valuing non-market goods. We recommend the use of stated preference discrete choice experiments, and test the use of this approach in three member states.
