    In search of a third place: a telecollaborative model for languaculture learning

    This thesis presents a five-year, global classroom project, in which French and American students study the same texts (literature, film remakes, works of sociology and anthropology), while corresponding using ICTs. Their reflections provide the basis for the development of conceptual and perceptual toolkits, containing consciousness-raising activities on individual and culturally-biased semantic and perceptual differences and similarities. Students compare home culture images and the corresponding images from the other culture(s), in an attempt to arrive at a "third place" (Kramsch 1993), as an intercultural speaker (Byraml995; 1997). Feedback and transcripts from participants are used to assess the effectiveness of this pedagogy of languaculture in broadening discourse options and educational opportunities, and of the role of telecollaboration in student motivation and engagement. The analytical framework draws on insights of Bakhtin, Vygotsky and Flarre and Gillet, focussing on the learner as agent, and language as fundamentally dialogic in nature. Telecollaboration provides access to multiple discursive perspectives and negotiation of meaning, whereby students, especially the more motivated, ask real questions and receive real answers. The global classroom leads to a change in the locus of control, increasing motivation and encouraging students to appropriate their own learning. Significant individual, group and cross-cultural differences emerge in the interpretation and degree of appropriation of the materials and opportunities for intercultural communication. This thesis provides research-informed, pedagogical guidelines for developing similar intercultural telecollaborative courses and makes a creative contribution, both to the dialogic teaching of language as culture and to the integration of new technologies into the curriculum

    How can diversity lead to richer unity? Developing intercultural competences through "Interity"

    International audienceIn this paper, an innovatory experiential teaching design, which aims to develop the intercultural competences of students in two French Graduate Engineering Schools, is described and analysed. Using a concept called "interity", developed by Demorgon, students are encouraged to negotiate a common frame of reference and action, creating unity from diversity. Our main objective is to use the diversity represented by cultural and disciplinary differences to produce new synergies. The intercultural competences which emerged are analysed using the five savoirs developed by Byram & Zarate and Demorgon's multiperspectivist approach. Successful elements of the teaching design are highlighted and suggestions for future improvements are given

    Exploring the effects of programmatic intervention on family planning health literacy and contraceptive utilization in eastern Uganda

    Uganda Village Project (UVP) implemented the Healthy Village Initiative (HVI) and conducted household surveys to assess the effects of the initiative. This data adds to the limited body of knowledge regarding the efficacy of community health interventions for reproductive health in rural east Africa. As part of the HVI, UVP surveys rural Ugandan households before and after a 3-year programmatic intervention to assess changes in family planning health literacy, and contraception utilization. Results showed that there was an increase in contraceptive utilization, an increase in family planning health literacy, and a decrease in unmet need for contraception. Community-based outreaches led by community members and health workers can contribute to improving access to contraception, utilization of contraception, and health literacy surrounding contraception

    In Vivo rapid delivery of vasopressin from an implantable drug delivery micro-electro-mechanical device

    A miniaturized implantable rapid drug delivery device based on micro-electro-mechanical-systems technology was recently developed and characterized. This device is intended to address acute conditions in high-risk subjects. This work provides an in vivo proof-of-concept for the device in a rabbit model, by releasing a physiologically active dose of vasopressin, a vasoconstrictor. The devices were implanted subcutaneously and activated to rapidly release vasopressin, with monitoring of mean arterial pressure and plasma levels.Device releases showed a rapid and measurable effect on mean arterial pressure as well as a continuous diffusion of vasopressin into the bloodstream, consistent with a depot effect. Plasma levels in rabbits receiving vasopressin with the device rose monotonically to 24.4 ± 2.9 ng/mL after one hour. Bioavailability after one hour was calculated to be 6.2 ± 2.8 % (mean ± s.d.).A new modality for rapid and controlled drug delivery has been developed. The device can be used as a new implantable device controlled by medical algorithms (based on heart rate or mean arterial pressure, for example) for autonomous operation in high-risk populations that require immediate ambulatory intervention.Keywords: Subcutaneous drug delivery; vasopressin; MEMS; rabbit; bioavailability

    Vascular Regeneration by Local Growth Factor Release Is Self-Limited by Microvascular Clearance

    Background— The challenge of angiogenesis science is that stable sustained vascular regeneration in humans has not been realized despite promising preclinical findings. We hypothesized that angiogenic therapies powerfully self-regulate by dynamically altering tissue characteristics. Induced neocapillaries increase drug clearance and limit tissue retention and subsequent angiogenesis even in the face of sustained delivery. Methods and Results— We quantified how capillary flow clears fibroblast growth factor after local epicardial delivery. Fibroblast growth factor spatial loading was significantly reduced with intact coronary perfusion. Penetration and retention decreased with transendothelial permeability, a trend diametrically opposite to intravascular delivery, in which factor delivery depends on vascular leak, but consistent with a continuum model of drug transport in perfused tissues. Model predictions of fibroblast growth factor sensitivity to manipulations of its diffusivity and transendothelial permeability were validated by conjugation to sucrose octasulfate. Induction of neocapillaries adds pharmacokinetic complexity. Sustained local fibroblast growth factor delivery in vivo produced a burst of neovascularization in ischemic myocardium but was followed by drug washout and a 5-fold decrease in fibroblast growth factor penetration depth. Conclusions— The very efficacy of proangiogenic compounds enhances their clearance and abrogates their pharmacological benefit.     Regulation of dendrimer/dextran material performance by altered tissue microenvironment in inflammation and neoplasia

    available in PMC 2015 October 30A “one material fits all” mindset ignores profound differences in target tissues that affect their responses and reactivity. Yet little attention has been paid to the role of diseased tissue on material performance, biocompatibility, and healing capacity. We assessed material-tissue interactions with a prototypical adhesive material based on dendrimer/dextran and colon as a model tissue platform. Adhesive materials have high sensitivity to changes in their environment and can be exploited to probe and quantify the influence of even subtle modifications in tissue architecture and biology. We studied inflammatory colitis and colon cancer and found not only a difference in adhesion related to surface chemical interactions but also the existence of a complex interplay that determined the overall dendrimer/dextran biomaterial compatibility. Compatibility was contextual, not simply a constitutive property of the material, and was related to the extent and nature of immune cells in the diseased environment present before material implantation. We then showed how to use information about local alterations of the tissue microenvironment to assess disease severity.     Systematic analysis of funding awarded for antimicrobial resistance research to institutions in the UK, 1997–2010

    Objectives: To assess the level of research funding awarded to UK institutions specifically for antimicrobial resistance-related research and how closely the topics funded relate to the clinical and public health burden of resistance. Methods: Databases and web sites were systematically searched for information on how infectious disease research studies were funded for the period 1997–2010. Studies specifically related to antimicrobial resistance, including bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology research, were identified and categorized in terms of funding by pathogen and disease and by a research and development value chain describing the type of science. Results: The overall dataset included 6165 studies receiving a total investment of £2.6 billion, of which £102 million was directed towards antimicrobial resistance research (5.5% of total studies, 3.9% of total spend). Of 337 resistance-related projects, 175 studies focused on bacteriology (40.2% of total resistance-related spending), 42 focused on antiviral resistance (17.2% of funding) and 51 focused on parasitology (27.4% of funding). Mean annual funding ranged from £1.9 million in 1997 to £22.1 million in 2009. Conclusions: Despite the fact that the emergence of antimicrobial resistance threatens our future ability to treat many infections, the proportion of the UK infection-research spend targeting this important area is small. There are encouraging signs of increased investment in this area, but it is important that this is sustained and targeted at areas of projected greatest burden. Two areas of particular concern requiring more investment are tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria
