Coherent Line Removal: Filtering out harmonically related line interference from experimental data, with application to gravitational wave detectors
We describe a new technique for removing troublesome interference from
external coherent signals present in the gravitational wave spectrum. The
method works when the interference is present in many harmonics, as long as
they remain coherent with one another. The method can remove interference even
when the frequency changes. We apply the method to the data produced by the
Glasgow laser interferometer in 1996 and the entire series of wide lines
corresponding to the electricity supply frequency and its harmonics are
removed, leaving the spectrum clean enough to detect possible signals
previously masked by them. We also study the effects of the line removal on the
statistics of the noise in the time domain. We find that this technique seems
to reduce the level of non-Gaussian noise present in the interferometer and
therefore, it can raise the sensitivity and duty cycle of the detectors.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Revtex, psfig. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Parameter estimation of compact binaries using the inspiral and ringdown waveforms
We analyze the problem of parameter estimation for compact binary systems
that could be detected by ground-based gravitational wave detectors.
So far this problem has only been dealt with for the inspiral and the
ringdown phases separately. In this paper, we combine the information from both
signals, and we study the improvement in parameter estimation, at a fixed
signal-to-noise ratio, by including the ringdown signal without making any
assumption on the merger phase. The study is performed for both initial and

Massive Black Hole Binary Inspirals: Results from the LISA Parameter Estimation Taskforce
The LISA Parameter Estimation (LISAPE) Taskforce was formed in September 2007
to provide the LISA Project with vetted codes, source distribution models, and
results related to parameter estimation. The Taskforce's goal is to be able to
quickly calculate the impact of any mission design changes on LISA's science
capabilities, based on reasonable estimates of the distribution of
astrophysical sources in the universe. This paper describes our Taskforce's
work on massive black-hole binaries (MBHBs). Given present uncertainties in the
formation history of MBHBs, we adopt four different population models, based on
(i) whether the initial black-hole seeds are small or large, and (ii) whether
accretion is efficient or inefficient at spinning up the holes. We compare four
largely independent codes for calculating LISA's parameter-estimation
capabilities. All codes are based on the Fisher-matrix approximation, but in
the past they used somewhat different signal models, source parametrizations
and noise curves. We show that once these differences are removed, the four
codes give results in extremely close agreement with each other. Using a code
that includes both spin precession and higher harmonics in the
gravitational-wave signal, we carry out Monte Carlo simulations and determine
the number of events that can be detected and accurately localized in our four

Silencing of germline-expressed genes by DNA elimination in somatic cells
SummaryChromatin diminution is the programmed elimination of specific DNA sequences during development. It occurs in diverse species, but the function(s) of diminution and the specificity of sequence loss remain largely unknown. Diminution in the nematode Ascaris suum occurs during early embryonic cleavages and leads to the loss of germline genome sequences and the formation of a distinct genome in somatic cells. We found that ∼43 Mb (∼13%) of genome sequence is eliminated in A. suum somatic cells, including ∼12.7 Mb of unique sequence. The eliminated sequences and location of the DNA breaks are the same in all somatic lineages from a single individual and between different individuals. At least 685 genes are eliminated. These genes are preferentially expressed in the germline and during early embryogenesis. We propose that diminution is a mechanism of germline gene regulation that specifically removes a large number of genes involved in gametogenesis and early embryogenesis
Search for gravitational wave bursts in LIGO's third science run
We report on a search for gravitational wave bursts in data from the three
LIGO interferometric detectors during their third science run. The search
targets subsecond bursts in the frequency range 100-1100 Hz for which no
waveform model is assumed, and has a sensitivity in terms of the
root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude of hrss ~ 10^{-20} / sqrt(Hz). No

Upper limits on the strength of periodic gravitational waves from PSR J1939+2134
The first science run of the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors
presented the opportunity to test methods of searching for gravitational waves
from known pulsars. Here we present new direct upper limits on the strength of
waves from the pulsar PSR J1939+2134 using two independent analysis methods,
one in the frequency domain using frequentist statistics and one in the time
domain using Bayesian inference. Both methods show that the strain amplitude at

Improving the sensitivity to gravitational-wave sources by modifying the input-output optics of advanced interferometers
We study frequency dependent (FD) input-output schemes for signal-recycling
interferometers, the baseline design of Advanced LIGO and the current
configuration of GEO 600. Complementary to a recent proposal by Harms et al. to
use FD input squeezing and ordinary homodyne detection, we explore a scheme
which uses ordinary squeezed vacuum, but FD readout. Both schemes, which are
sub-optimal among all possible input-output schemes, provide a global noise
suppression by the power squeeze factor, while being realizable by using
detuned Fabry-Perot cavities as input/output filters. At high frequencies, the
two schemes are shown to be equivalent, while at low frequencies our scheme
gives better performance than that of Harms et al., and is nearly fully
optimal. We then study the sensitivity improvement achievable by these schemes
in Advanced LIGO era (with 30-m filter cavities and current estimates of
filter-mirror losses and thermal noise), for neutron star binary inspirals, and
for narrowband GW sources such as low-mass X-ray binaries and known radio
pulsars. Optical losses are shown to be a major obstacle for the actual
implementation of these techniques in Advanced LIGO. On time scales of
third-generation interferometers, like EURO/LIGO-III (~2012), with
kilometer-scale filter cavities, a signal-recycling interferometer with the FD
readout scheme explored in this paper can have performances comparable to

Psychosocial issues of women with type 1 diabetes transitioning to motherhood: a structured literature review
BACKGROUND: Life transitions often involve complex decisions, challenges and changes that affect diabetes management. Transition to motherhood is a major life event accompanied by increased risk that the pregnancy will lead to or accelerate existing diabetes-related complications, as well as risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, all of which inevitably increase anxiety. The frequency of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia often increases during pregnancy, which causes concern for the health and physical well-being of the mother and unborn child. This review aimed to examine the experiences of women with T1DM focusing on the pregnancy and postnatal phases of their transition to motherhood. METHODS: The structured literature review comprised a comprehensive search strategy identifying primary studies published in English between 1990-2012. Standard literature databases were searched along with the contents of diabetes-specific journals. Reference lists of included studies were checked. Search terms included: 'diabetes', 'type 1', 'pregnancy', 'motherhood', 'transition', 'social support', 'quality of life' and 'psychological well-being'. RESULT: Of 112 abstracts returned, 62 articles were reviewed in full-text, and 16 met the inclusion criteria. There was a high level of diversity among these studies but three common key themes were identified. They related to physical (maternal and fetal) well-being, psychological well-being and social environment. The results were synthesized narratively. CONCLUSION: Women with type 1 diabetes experience a variety of psychosocial issues in their transition to motherhood: increased levels of anxiety, diabetes-related distress, guilt, a sense of disconnectedness from health professionals, and a focus on medicalisation of pregnancy rather than the positive transition to motherhood. A trusting relationship with health professionals, sharing experiences with other women with diabetes, active social support, shared decision and responsibilities for diabetes management assisted the women to make a positive transition. Health professionals can promote a positive transition to motherhood by proactively supporting women with T1DM in informed decision-making, by facilitating communication within the healthcare team and co-ordinating care for women with type 1 diabetes transitioning to motherhood
Pathway-based predictive approaches for non-animal assessment of acute inhalation toxicity
New approaches are needed to assess the effects of inhaled substances on human health. These approaches will be based on mechanisms of toxicity, an understanding of dosimetry, and the use of in silico modeling and in vitro test methods. In order to accelerate wider implementation of such approaches, development of adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) can help identify and address gaps in our understanding of relevant parameters for model input and mechanisms, and optimize non-animal approaches that can be used to investigate key events of toxicity. This paper describes the AOPs and the toolbox of in vitro and in silico models that can be used to assess the key events leading to toxicity following inhalation exposure. Because the optimal testing strategy will vary depending on the substance of interest, here we present a decision tree approach to identify an appropriate non-animal integrated testing strategy that incorporates consideration of a substance's physicochemical properties, relevant mechanisms of toxicity, and available in silico models and in vitro test methods. This decision tree can facilitate standardization of the testing approaches. Case study examples are presented to provide a basis for proof-of-concept testing to illustrate the utility of non-animal approaches to inform hazard identification and risk assessment of humans exposed to inhaled substances
