The role of beam geometry in population statistics and pulse profiles of radio and gamma-ray pulsars
We present results of a pulsar population synthesis study that incorporates a
number of recent developments and some significant improvements over our
previous study. We have included the results of the Parkes multi-beam pulsar
survey in our select group of nine radio surveys, doubling our sample of radio
pulsars. We adopted with some modifications the radio beam geometry of
Arzoumanian, Chernoff & Cordes (2002). For the -ray beam, we have
assumed the slot gap geometry described in the work of Muslimov & Harding
(2003). To account for the shape of the distribution of radio pulsars in the
diagram, we continue to find that decay of the magnetic field on a
timescale of 2.8 Myr is needed. With all nine surveys, our model predicts that
EGRET should have seen 7 radio-quiet (below the sensitivity of these radio
surveys) and 19 radio-loud -ray pulsars. AGILE (nominal sensitivity
map) is expected to detect 13 radio-quiet and 37 radio-loud -ray
pulsars, while GLAST, with greater sensitivity is expected to detect 276
radio-quiet and 344 radio-loud -ray pulsars. When the Parkes multi-beam
pulsar survey is excluded, the ratio of radio-loud to radio-quiet -ray
pulsars decreases, especially for GLAST. The decrease for EGRET is 45%,
implying that some fraction of EGRET unidentified sources are radio-loud
-ray pulsars. In the radio geometry adopted, short period pulsars are
core dominated. Unlike the EGRET -ray pulsars, our model predicts that
when two -ray peaks appear in the pulse profile, a dominant radio core
peak appears in between the -ray peaks. Our findings suggest that
further improvements are required in describing both the radio and -ray

Lost Toy? Monsters Under the Bed? Contributions of Temperament and Family Factors to Early Internalizing Problems in Boys and Girls
This study was designed to examine the contribution of multiple risk factors to early internalizing problems and to investigate whether family and ecological context moderated the association between child temperament and internalizing outcomes. A sample of 1,202 mothers of 2- and 3-year-old children completed a survey of child social-emotional functioning, family environment, and violence exposure. Child temperament, maternal affective symptoms, and family expressiveness were associated with child anxiety and depression problems. Violence exposure was related only to child anxiety. When maternal affective symptoms were elevated, inhibited girls but not boys were rated as more anxious and youngsters with heightened negative emotionality were rated as more depressed. Family expressiveness moderated the association between inhibited temperament and anxiety symptoms
Effects of Parkinson’s disease on optic flow perception for heading direction during navigation
Visuoperceptual disorders have been identified in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and may affect the perception of optic flow for heading direction during navigation. Studies in healthy subjects have confirmed that heading direction can be determined by equalizing the optic flow speed (OS) between visual fields. The present study investigated the effects of PD on the use of optic flow for heading direction, walking parameters, and interlimb coordination during navigation, examining the contributions of OS and spatial frequency (dot density). Twelve individuals with PD without dementia, 18 age-matched normal control adults (NC), and 23 young control adults (YC) walked through a virtual hallway at about 0.8 m/s. The hallway was created by random dots on side walls. Three levels of OS (0.8, 1.2, and 1.8 m/s) and dot density (1, 2, and 3 dots/m2) were presented on one wall while on the other wall, OS and dot density were fixed at 0.8 m/s and 3 dots/m2, respectively. Three-dimensional kinematic data were collected, and lateral drift, walking speed, stride frequency and length, and frequency, and phase relations between arms and legs were calculated. A significant linear effect was observed on lateral drift to the wall with lower OS for YC and NC, but not for PD. Compared to YC and NC, PD veered more to the left under OS and dot density conditions. The results suggest that healthy adults perceive optic flow for heading direction. Heading direction in PD may be more affected by the asymmetry of dopamine levels between the hemispheres and by motor lateralization as indexed by handedness.Published versio
Poor Disgust Suppression Is Associated with Increased Anxiety in Caregivers of People with Neurodegenerative Disease.
ObjectivesCaregivers of persons with neurodegenerative disease have high rates of mental health problems compared to noncaregiving adults. Emotion regulation may play an important role in preserving caregivers' mental health. We examined the associations between caregivers' emotion regulation measured in several ways (ability, habitual use, and self-ratings) and their mental health symptoms.MethodNinety-one caregivers of persons with neurodegenerative disease participated in a laboratory-based assessment of emotion regulation. In two series of tasks, caregivers were given different instructions (no instruction, suppress) regarding altering their emotional behavioral responses to disgusting films and acoustic startle stimuli. Caregivers' emotional behavior was measured via behavioral coding and caregivers rated "how much emotion" they showed during each task. Anxiety, depression, and habitual use of expressive suppression were measured via questionnaires.ResultsPoor emotion regulation in the disgust suppression condition (i.e., greater emotional behavior) was associated with greater anxiety. Associations were not found for the startle suppression condition, depression, or self-report measures of emotion regulation.DiscussionFindings suggest that caregivers who are unable to suppress emotional behavior in response to disgusting stimuli may be at greater risk for anxiety. Given high levels of anxiety in caregivers, it may be useful to evaluate interventions that improve ability to downregulate emotional behavior

Unilateral ureteral obstruction in neonatal rats leads to renal insufficiency in adulthood.BackgroundAlthough unilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction is the most common cause of congenital obstructive nephropathy in infants and children, management remains controversial, and follow-up after pyeloplasty is generally limited to the pediatric ages. We have developed a model of temporary unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in the neonatal rat: One month following the relief of five-day UUO, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of the postobstructed kidney was normal despite a 40% reduction in the number of glomeruli and residual vascular, glomerular, tubular, and interstitial injury.MethodsTo determine whether hyperfiltration and residual injury of remaining nephrons leads to progression of renal insufficiency in later life, 31 rats were sham operated or subjected to left UUO at one day of age, with relief of UUO five days later, and were studied at one year of age. GFR was measured by inulin clearance, and the number of glomeruli, tubular atrophy, glomerular sclerosis, and interstitial fibrosis were measured by histomorphometry in sham, obstructed (UUO), and intact opposite kidneys. Intrarenal macrophages and α-smooth muscle actin were identified by immunohistochemistry.ResultsDespite relief of UUO, ultimate growth of the postobstructed kidney was impaired. The number of glomeruli was reduced by 40%, and GFR was decreased by 80%. However, despite significant compensatory growth of the opposite kidney, there was no compensatory increase in GFR, and proteinuria was increased. Moreover, glomerular sclerosis, tubular atrophy, macrophage infiltration, and interstitial fibrosis were significantly increased not only in the postobstructed kidney, but also in the opposite kidney.ConclusionsAlthough GFR is initially maintained following relief of five-day UUO in the neonatal rat, there is eventual profound loss of function of the postobstructed and opposite kidneys because of progressive tubulointerstitial and glomerular damage. These findings suggest that despite normal postoperative GFR in infancy, children undergoing pyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction should be followed into adulthood. Elucidation of the cellular response to temporary UUO may lead to improved methods to assess renal growth, injury, and functional reserve in patients with congenital obstructive nephropathy

Physiological, behavioral and subjective sadness reactivity in frontotemporal dementia subtypes.
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a neurodegenerative disease broadly characterized by socioemotional impairments, includes three clinical subtypes: behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and non-fluent variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA). Emerging evidence has shown emotional reactivity impairments in bvFTD and svPPA, whereas emotional reactivity in nfvPPA is far less studied. In 105 patients with FTD (49 bvFTD, 31 svPPA and 25 nfvPPA) and 27 healthy controls, we examined three aspects of emotional reactivity (physiology, facial behavior and subjective experience) in response to a sad film. In a subset of the sample, we also examined the neural correlates of diminished aspects of reactivity using voxel-based morphometry. Results indicated that all three subtypes of FTD showed diminished physiological responding in respiration rate and diastolic blood pressure; patients with bvFTD and svPPA also showed diminished subjective experience, and no subtypes showed diminished facial behavior. Moreover, there were differences among the clinical subtypes in brain regions where smaller volumes were associated with diminished sadness reactivity. These results show that emotion impairments extend to sadness reactivity in FTD and underscore the importance of considering different aspects of sadness reactivity in multiple clinical subtypes for characterizing emotional deficits and associated neurodegeneration in FTD
Functional correlates of optic flow motion processing in Parkinson’s disease
The visual input created by the relative motion between an individual and the environment, also called optic flow, influences the sense of self-motion, postural orientation, veering of gait, and visuospatial cognition. An optic flow network comprising visual motion areas V6, V3A, and MT+, as well as visuo-vestibular areas including posterior insula vestibular cortex (PIVC) and cingulate sulcus visual area (CSv), has been described as uniquely selective for parsing egomotion depth cues in humans. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) have known behavioral deficits in optic flow perception and visuospatial cognition compared to age- and education-matched control adults (MC). The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neural correlates related to impaired optic flow perception in PD. We conducted fMRI on 40 non-demented participants (23 PD and 17 MC) during passive viewing of simulated optic flow motion and random motion. We hypothesized that compared to the MC group, PD participants would show abnormal neural activity in regions comprising this optic flow network. MC participants showed robust activation across all regions in the optic flow network, consistent with studies in young adults, suggesting intact optic flow perception at the neural level in healthy aging. PD participants showed diminished activity compared to MC particularly within visual motion area MT+ and the visuo-vestibular region CSv. Further, activation in visuo-vestibular region CSv was associated with disease severity. These findings suggest that behavioral reports of impaired optic flow perception and visuospatial performance may be a result of impaired neural processing within visual motion and visuo-vestibular regions in PD.Published versio
Spatial and temporal distribution and nest site characteristics of feral honey bee (Hymenoptera: apidae) colonies in a coastal prairie landscape
We evaluated the distribution and abundance of feral honey bee, Apis mellifera L.,
colonies in a coastal prairie landscape by examining nest site characteristics, population trends, and
spatial and temporal patterns in cavity use. The colony densities of up to 12.5 colonies per km2 were
the highest reported in the literature for an area including both suitable and unsuitable patches of
nesting habitat. The measured cavity attributes were similar to those reported from other areas. The
time occupied and turnover indices provided useful information about cavity quality, although none
of the measured cavity attributes were correlated with these indices. Unmeasurable cavity characteristics,
such as cavity volume, may provide a better estimate of cavity quality. Spatial patterns existed
in cavity use by the feral colonies, with the colonies showing an aggregated pattern of distribution
throughout the study. Colony aggregations probably resulted from the distribution of resources,
especially cavities. Two years after the arrival of Africanized honey bees, cavities used by Africanized
and European colonies were aggregated in distribution. During what seemed to be a transition period,
both Africanized and European colonies were randomly distributed. After that time, European
colonies remained randomly distributed, whereas Africanized colonies were aggregated. Therefore,
the invasion of Africanized honey bees seemed to fragment the existing European population,
corresponding to a decrease in the overall number of European colonies in the study area
