    Especies productores de resina y gomas naturales en Etiopía y la aplicación potencial de sus productos

    Ethiopia is one of the countries well endowed with various species of Acacia, Boswellia and Commiphora that are known to produce gum arabic, frankincense and myrrh, respectively. Over 60 gum and resin bearing species are found in the country. The total area of oleo-gum resin bearing woodlands cover about 2.9 million ha of land in the country, with over 300,000 metric tons of natural gum production potential. Boswellia papyrifera is a chief gum resin producing tree species in Ethiopia. The total area covered by the species is estimated to be more than 1.5 million ha. Frankincense and myrrh are used in medicines, beverages and liqueurs, cosmetics, detergents, creams and perfumery, paints, adhesives and dyes manufacturing. Gum Arabic is used as stabilizing, in food and drink industries; in pharmaceuticals, in printing and textile industries. Despite the enormous socio-economic importance of these natural products, the species are declining at an alarming rate due to degradation resulted from agricultural expansion, overgrazing, fire, poor incense harvesting practices, etc. Therefore, research and development efforts and international collaborations could have strong potentials to the conservation, production and commercialization for the benefits of the local, national as well as the international communities.Etiopía es uno de los países que tiene varias especies de de Acacia, Boswellia y Commiphora que son utilizados para la producción de goma arábiga, resina y mirra respectivamente, y en el país se encuentran más de 60 especies productoras de resinas naturales. El área total cubierto por especies productoras de resinas naturales se estima en 2,9 millones de hectáreas en todo el país, con una producción potencial de 300.000 toneladas métricas. Boswellia papyrifera es la especies gran productora de resina en Etiopia. El área total cubierta por esta especie se estima por encima de 1,5 millones de ha. La resina y la mirra se usan en la preparación de medicinas, bebidas y licores, cosméticos, detergentes, cremas y perfumerías, pinturas y adhesivos. La goma arábiga se usa como estabilizador en las industrias alimentarías; y en las industrias farmacéuticas, imprentas y textiles. Aunque las resinas natural tienes enormes importancias socioeconómicas, las especies están disminuyendo alarmantemente debido a las degradaciones por la expansión de agricultura, sobre pastoreo, fuego, mala práctica de resinación etc. Esfuerzos en investigación y desarrollo y colaboraciones internacionales podrían tener fuertes potencias en la conservación, producción y comercialización para el beneficio de las comunidades locales, nacionales e internacionales

    Human Pappilomavirus Genotype in Cervical Tissue of Patients with Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) 1, CIN 2, and CIN 3

    Objectives: to determine the genotype of HPV in patients with precancerous lesions of cervical tissue.Materials and Methods: An observational study with cross sectional study of patients paraffin block CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 was conducted in Dr Soetomo Hospital. HPV DNA was extracted from paraffin blocks, then performed PCR and genotyping of HPV. The sample consisted of 28 patients with cervical tissue paraffin blocks CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3. Patients aged between 26-74 years (standard deviation 10,12).Results: HPV genotypes that infect patients with CIN1 were HPV16 and 18, CIN2 were HPV16 and 52 and CIN3 were HPV16, 67, and combined infection HPV16/67 and HPV52/67. HPV genotypes in a single infection were 26/28 (HPV16, HPV18, HPV52 and HPV67), and multiple infections were 2/28 (HPV16/67 and HPV52/67).Conclusion: The most dominant HPV genotypes infect patients with precancerous lesions of the cervix were HPV16, HPV67, HPV52, and HPV18

    Skrining Kanker Serviks Dengan Pemeriksaan Pap Smear Di Puskesmas Tanah Kali Kedinding Surabaya Dan Rumah Sakit Mawadah Mojokerto

    Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui prevalensi lesi prekanker serviks dengan cara melakukan skrining kanker serviks menggunakan pemeriksaan Pap smear.Bahan dan Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian observasional deskriptif dengan metode pendekatan cross sectional yang dilakukan pada 140 wanita, terdiri dari 90 orang dari Puskes-mas Tanah Kali Kedinding Surabaya, dan 50 orang dari Rumah Sakit Mawadah Mojokerto, dengan usia 20-70 tahun. Pemeriksaan spesimen sitologi serviks dengan pengecatan Papaniculaou dan klasifikasi hasil pemeriksaaan sitologi berdasar-kan klasifikasi Papaniculaou dan sistim Bethesda. Pemeriksaan inspeksi visual asam asetat (IVA) adalah metode lain untuk skrining kanker serviks dilakukan dengan mengoleskan asam asetat 5% pada area serviks dan melakukan pengamatan satu menit kemudian.Hasil: Hasil pemeriksaaan Pap smear menunjukkan Papaniculaou kelas I (sama dengan normal pada klasifikasi sistim Bethesda) yaitu 12.1%, kelas II (sama dengan NILM pada klasifikasi sistim Bethesda) yaitu 86, 4%, dan kelas III (sama dengan LSIL pada klasifikasi sistim Bethesda) yaitu 1,4%. Hasil pemeriksaan IVA menunjukkan 6,43% positif dan 93,57% negatif. Hasil pemeriksa-an IVA positif terdapat pada 9/140 orang yang merupakan proses keradangan dan infeksi, bukan merupakan lesi prekanker.Simpulan: Prevalensi lesi prekanker yaitu 1,4%. Pemeriksaan IVA menunjukkan hasil positif semu yang disebabkan oleh proses radang atau infeksi pada serviks

    Representation of Africa online: sourcing practice and frames of reference

    The dominant perspective on the representation of Africa in the western media claims that western media coverage is bias and crisis orientated and the liberal perspective claims that the coverage of Africa is not as negative as is often assumed. However, there is a paucity of literature on the representation of Africa online. This research enquiry is relevant because literature claims that the Internet has the potential to resolve the journalistic predicament of representing other culture through political participation and deliberation. But this requires a re-orientation of the sourcing practice of news organization to embrace sensitivity to and knowledge of African cultures. Moreover, the journalistic predicament can be resolved or not depending on the news gathering approach adopted by the news organization. Literature has identified two approaches, that is, ‘gatekeeping’ used mainly by dominant traditional media and ‘gatewatching’ used by alternative media in their quest to counter mainstream ideology. This study examines the impacts of the ‘gatewatching’ approach adopted by Africa Have Your Say (AHYS) website on its representation and frames of reference of Africa. It uses on-site observation, in-depth interviews and textual analysis to gather data. The study found that although the sourcing practice at the AHYS is elaborate and complex, the ‘gatewatching’ approach makes its susceptible to second level agenda setting. Hence, its frame repeats the attributes and tone used by the mainstream traditional media. However, a minority of users did not use repeat this frame in their comments

    Phase noise characterisation of a 2-km hollow-core nested antiresonant nodeless fibre for twin-field quantum key distribution

    The performance of quantum key distribution (QKD) is heavily dependent on the physical properties of the channel over which it is executed. Propagation losses and perturbations in the encoded photons' degrees of freedom, such as polarisation or phase, limit both the QKD range and key rate. The maintenance of phase coherence over optical fibres has lately received considerable attention as it enables QKD over long distances, e.g., through phase-based protocols like Twin-Field (TF) QKD. While optical single mode fibres (SMFs) are the current standard type of fibre, recent hollow core fibres (HCFs) could become a superior alternative in the future. Whereas the co-existence of quantum and classical signals in HCF has already been demonstrated, the phase noise resilience required for phase-based QKD protocols is yet to be established. This work explores the behaviour of HCF with respect to phase noise for the purpose of TF-QKD-like protocols. To achieve this, two experiments are performed. The first, is a set of concurrent measurements on 2 km of HCF and SMF in a double asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration. The second, uses a TF-QKD interferometer consisting of HCF and SMF channels. These initial results indicate that HCF is suitable for use in TF-QKD and other phase-based QKD protocols

    Sub-LET Threshold SEE cross section dependency with ion energy

    This study focuses on the ion species and energy dependence of the heavy ion SEE cross section in the sub-LET threshold region through a set of experimental data. In addition, a Monte Carlo based model is introduced and applied, showing a good agreement with the data in the several hundred MeV/n range while evidencing large discrepancies with the measurements in the 10-30 MeV/n interval, notably for the Ne ion. Such discrepancies are carefully analyzed and discussed

    Common and gender-specific associations with cocaine use on gray matter volume: Data from the ENIGMA addiction working group

    Gray matter volume (GMV) in frontal cortical and limbic regions is susceptible to cocaine-associated reductions in cocaine-dependent individuals (CD) and is negatively associated with duration of cocaine use. Gender differences in CD individuals have been reported clinically and in the context of neural responses to cue-induced craving and stress reactivity. The variability of GMV in select brain areas between men and women (e.g., limbic regions) underscores the importance of exploring interaction effects between gender and cocaine dependence on brain structure. Therefore, voxel-based morphometry data derived from the ENIGMA Addiction Consortium were used to investigate potential gender differences in GMV in CD individuals compared to matched controls (CTL). T1-weighted MRI scans and clinical data were pooled from seven sites yielding 420 gender- and age-matched participants: CD men (CDM, n = 140); CD women (CDW, n = 70); control men (CTLM, n = 140); and control women (CTLW, n = 70). Differences in GMV were assessed using a 2 × 2 ANCOVA, and voxelwise whole-brain linear regressions were conducted to explore relationships between GMV and duration of cocaine use. All analyses were corrected for age, total intracranial volume, and site. Diagnostic differences were predominantly found in frontal regions (CD < CTL). Interestingly, gender × diagnosis interactions in the left anterior insula and left lingual gyrus were also documented, driven by differences in women (CDW < CTLW). Further, lower right hippocampal GMV was associated with greater cocaine duration in CDM. Given the importance of the anterior insula to interoception and the hippocampus to learning contextual associations, results may point to gender-specific mechanisms in cocaine addiction

    Brain monoamine oxidase A activity predicts trait aggression

    The genetic deletion of monoamine oxidase A (MAO A), an enzyme that breaks down the monoamine neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, produces aggressive phenotypes across species. Therefore, a common polymorphism in the MAO A gene (MAOA, Mendelian Inheritance in Men database number 309850, referred to as high or low based on transcription in non-neuronal cells) has been investigated in a number of externalizing behavioral and clinical phenotypes. These studies provide evidence linking the low MAOA genotype and violent behavior but only through interaction with severe environmental stressors during childhood. Here, we hypothesized that in healthy adult males the gene product of MAO A in the brain, rather than the gene per se, would be associated with regulating the concentration of brain amines involved in trait aggression. Brain MAO A activity was measured in vivo in healthy nonsmoking men with positron emission tomography using a radioligand specific for MAO A (clorgyline labeled with carbon 11). Trait aggression was measured with the multidimensional personality questionnaire (MPQ). Here we report for the first time that brain MAO A correlates inversely with the MPQ trait measure of aggression (but not with other personality traits) such that the lower the MAO A activity in cortical and subcortical brain regions, the higher the self-reported aggression (in both MAOA genotype groups) contributing to more than one-third of the variability. Because trait aggression is a measure used to predict antisocial behavior, these results underscore the relevance of MAO A as a neurochemical substrate of aberrant aggression
