Perception of women in Egyptian advertising

This research investigates the relationship between Egyptian Mass Media coverage and the perception of the Egyptian audience towards women’s physical appearance in Egyptian Advertising (TV and Magazines). In TV commercials, stereotypes are associated with women. Research indicates that media can generate a continued negative imagery and stereotypes, in particular towards women. There is an obvious inconsistency in the way women dress demonstrating that they are habitually portrayed as more sexual objects than are men. Hopefully, this research would move ahead feminist view towards disparity in the depiction of sexuality and roles of women along the years. In spite of the fact that the study has shown an indication towards the emergence of an innovative tendency towards revealing women equal to men; nevertheless, stereotyping towards women still exists. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research were applied in this research, which is the ‘perception of women in Egyptian advertising’. In this research, the sample was a “Purposive Non-Random” composed of both genders. Qualitative research was used to gain the insight into the Egyptian society perception of women in Egyptian Media. Then a quantitative research was used to conclude the results and be able to describe the perception of the population under study

Spatio-semantic user profiles in location-based social networks

Knowledge of users’ visits to places is one of the keys to understanding their interest in places. User-contributed annotations of place, the types of places they visit, and the activities they carry out, add a layer of important semantics that, if considered, can result in more refined representations of user profiles. In this paper, semantic information is summarised as tags for places and a folksonomy data model is used to represent spatial and semantic relationships between users, places, and tags. The model allows simple co-occurrence methods and similarity measures to be applied to build different views of personalised user profiles. Basic profiles capture direct user interactions, while enriched profiles offer an extended view of users’ association with places and tags that take into account relationships in the folksonomy. The main contributions of this work are the proposal of a uniform approach to the creation of user profiles on the Social Web that integrates both the spatial and semantic components of user-provided information, and the demonstration of the effectiveness of this approach with realistic datasets

Functional differential equations with unbounded delay in extrapolation spaces

International audienceWe study the existence, regularity and stability of solutions for nonlinear partial neutral functional differential equations with unbounded de-lay and a Hille-Yosida operator on a Banach space X. We consider two non-linear perturbations: the first one is a function taking its values in X and the second one is a function belonging to a space larger than X, an extrapolated space. We use the extrapolation techniques to prove the existence and regu-larity of solutions and we establish a linearization principle for the stability of the equilibria of our equation

The Interplay between Formal and Informal Training for Basic-Level Workers: Comparing Experiences in Canada and the United Kingdom

This study investigated the types of formal and informal training activities of basic level employees using a qualitative multi-site case study research design. Seven programs from Canada and four programs from the North and South of England were chosen from small, medium and large businesses. The range of formal and informal training activities is described as well as a preliminary analysis of informal learning as both an activity and as a process for workers improving their literacy skills

First thoracoscopic repair of tracheoesophageal fistula in the UAE: a case report and a review of the literature

Repair of esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) with open thoracotomy is associated with significant chest wall deformity. However, with the advancement made in minimally invasive instruments, thoracoscopic repair of this anomaly is achievable. We report our first successful case of thoracoscopic repair of EA/TEF. The surgical steps followed have been enumerated, as well as the postoperative management protocol. Thoracoscopic repair of EA/TEF is a real advantage for affected babies.Keywords: esophageal atresia, thoracoscopy, tracheoesophageal fistul

Structural, Mechanical, and Transport Properties of Electron Beam-Irradiated Chitosan Membranes at Different Doses

Chitosan powder irradiated by electron beam at different doses, up to 250 kGy, was used to prepare membranes for drug release applications. The irradiation effect on the molecular weight of powder chitosan, the characteristics of the prepared membranes, and their transport of sulfamerazine sodium salt (SULF) were investigated. The effect of the addition of glutaraldehyde (GLA) as a crosslinking agent in the chitosan solution used for the preparation of the membranes was also studied. A decrease in the chitosan molecular weight with the increase in the irradiation dose was observed, while the membranes prepared with the irradiated chitosan at higher dose exhibited lower swelling. However, an opposite behavior was detected when the membranes were prepared with GLA-crosslinked chitosan. A GLA crosslinking agent reduced the crystallinity of the chitosan membranes and the swelling, whereas the water contact angle and SULF transport increased with the increase in the irradiation dose
