    Proliferation de Sida cordifoloia L. sure les parcours Saheliens, cas du Niger

    RESUMECette Ă©tude vise Ă  caractĂ©riser la prolifĂ©ration de Sida cordifolia L. sur les parcours naturels au Niger. Les donnĂ©es, collectĂ©es au moyen de relevĂ©s phytosociologiques, ont permis de caractĂ©riser par zone bioclimatique, l’abondance et la dominance des espĂšces herbacĂ©es en mettant en exergue Sida cordifolia L. Une typologie des pĂąturages faite en fonction de leur degrĂ© de colonisation par cette espĂšce a permis de distinguer trois types de pĂąturage : les pĂąturages colonisĂ©s (fortement ou moyennement, faiblement), tous situĂ©s au sud et ou au centre de la rĂ©gion en zone agricole ouagropastorale, soumis Ă  une trĂšs forte pression pastorale et les pĂąturages non colonisĂ©s par cette espĂšce, essentiellement situĂ©s au nord de la rĂ©gion en zone pastorale, soumis Ă  une faible pression animale. La pression pastorale serait la cause principale de la prolifĂ©ration de Sida cordifolia L. sur ces parcours. Ainsi, les pĂąturages non ou faiblement colonisĂ©s seraient fortement colonisĂ©s si la pression de pĂąture ne diminue pas. Il est donc nĂ©cessaire d’adapter la charge animale aux capacitĂ©s de charge de ces pĂąturages afin de renverser cette tendance Ă  la dĂ©gradation de ces Ă©cosystĂšmes pastoraux et amĂ©liorer leur valeur pastorale. ABSTRACTPROLIFERATION OF SIDA CORDIFOLIA L. ON SAHELIAN RANGELANDS, CASE OF NIGERThis study aims to characterize the proliferation of Sida cordifolia L. on natural rangelands in Niger. The data, collected by phytosociological surveys, made it possible to characterize by abundance and dominance of herbaceous species by bioclimatic zone, highlighting Sida cordifolia L. A typology of pastures made according to their degree of colonization by this species made it possible to distinguish three types of pasture: colonized pastures (strongly or moderately, weakly), all located in the south and or in the center of the region in agricultural or agro-pastoral zones, subjected to very strong pastoral pressure and pastures not colonized by this species, mainly located in the north of the region in pastoral areas, subject to low animal pressure. Pastoral pressure is the main cause of the proliferation of Sida cordifolia L. on these rangelands. Thus, non-colonized or poorly colonized pastures would be strongly colonized if the pasture pressure does not decrease. It is therefore necessary to adapt the animal load to the carrying capacity of these pastures in order to reverse this deteriorating tendency of these pastoral ecosystems and improve their pastoral value

    CaractĂ©risation HydrogĂ©ochimique des AquifĂšres du Bassin de Timia (Massif de l’AĂŻr, Nord du Niger)

    Le bassin de Timia est situĂ© dans le massif de l’AĂŻr (Nord du Niger). Dans cette zone, les ressources en eaux sont reprĂ©sentĂ©es par les aquifĂšres altĂ©rĂ©s et fissurĂ©s du socle et ceux des alluvions. Ces aquifĂšres, sont sollicitĂ©s pour l’alimentation des populations, et pour l’irrigation. Ces activitĂ©s, ont eu comme consĂ©quence la dĂ©gradation de la qualitĂ© de ces eaux. L’objectif de la prĂ©sente Ă©tude est de dĂ©terminer les caractĂ©ristiques physico-chimiques et les mĂ©canismes d’acquisition de la minĂ©ralisation des eaux souterraines de la zone de Timia. La mĂ©thodologie basĂ©e sur les approches hydrochimiques et l’analyse en composante principale montre que les facies chimiques des eaux souterraines sont dominĂ©s par les facies de type bicarbonatĂ©s calciques et magnĂ©siens (52%). Les facies bicarbonatĂ©s sodiques et potassiques sont aussi important (29%) tandis que les eaux hyper-bicarbonatĂ©es sodiques (13%) sont faiblement reprĂ©sentĂ©es. Les sources de la minĂ©ralisation des eaux sont principalement de trois types : les apports superficiels (pollution), l’hydrolyse des minĂ©raux silicatĂ©s et les activitĂ©s volcaniques. The Timia Basin is located in the AĂŻr Massif (Northern Niger). In this area, water resources are represented by altered and fissured basement and alluvial aquifers. These aquifers, are solicited for the water supply, and irrigation. These activities have for consequences the degradation of the quality of these waters. The objective of this study is to determine the physicochemical characteristics and the mechanisms house control the mineralization of groundwater in Timia area. The methodology based on hydrochemical approaches and principal component analysis shows that groundwater chemistry are dominated by calcium-magnesium bicarbonate facies (52%). Sodium-potassium bicarbonate facies are also important (29%) while, sodium hyper-bicarbonate waters (13%) are poorly represented. The sources who controlled the water mineralization are mainly of three types: superficial supply (pollution), hydrolysis of silicate minerals and volcanic activities

    Morphological assessment of Niger Kuri cattle using multivariate methods

    A total of 406 adult cows and 34 bulls belonging to the Niger Kuri cattle population were assessed for 16 body measurements and 11 qualitative traits to contribute to the characterization of this unique cattle breed. Body measurements included facial, horn, ear and rump lengths; facial, cranial, shoulder, pelvic and ischium widths; height at withers and at hips; muzzle circumference; heart girth; body and tail lengths; and thorax depth. Qualitative traits included cephalic profile, ear shape, muzzle pigmentation, eyelid pigmentation, hoof pigmentation, horn colour, dewlap size, backline profile, horn shape, spotting pattern, and coat colour pattern. Data were analysed jointly with 377 individuals from four other West African taurine cattle breeds (N’Dama, Lagunaire, Lobi and Somba) using multivariate statistical methods, including canonical and correspondence analyses. Among the breeds analysed, Kuri cattle had the highest mean values for all body measurements: height at withers and body length had mean values of 124.0 ± 0.4 and 146.8 ± 1.0 cm in Kuri cows, respectively, and 126.0 ± 2.2 and 155.7 ± 3.6 cm, respectively, in Kuri bulls. Canonical analysis allowed the construction of contour plots to illustrate the high differentiation between Kuri cattle and the other breeds, regardless of the sex of the individuals. Further, the Mahalanobis distance matrices showed that pairs involving Kuri cattle had the higher differentiation of these populations. Correspondence analysis carried out on these 11 qualitative traits allowed the researchers to ascertain a clear differentiation between the Kuri and the other taurine cattle breeds. The N’Dama, Lagunaire, Lobi, and Somba breeds did not show clear differentiation at qualitative-type trait level with 75% confidence regions computed for these four breeds being highly intermingled. In the current data, Kuri cattle had the highest frequency in qualitative features, such as concave cephalic profile, dropped ears, non-pigmented muzzle and grey-coloured horns, which are absent in West African taurine and zebu cattle breeds, according to the literature. The current evidence would suggest that unique Kuri cattle type features may result from breeding decisions rather than from zebu admixture. This work confirms that at type trait level Kuri cattle is a unique population within the West African taurine cattle group. The implementation of genetic analyses aiming at ascertaining the degree of uniqueness of the breed is advised.Keywords: Body measurements, Bos taurus, multivariate analyses, qualitative traits, West African cattl

    Implementation of active management of the third period of childbirth for the prevention of immediate post-partum bleeding in four regional maternity hospitals of Conakry, Guinea

    Background: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency, skills level of health care service providers; to identify complications and difficulties related to the implementation of AMTPC/GATPA.Methods: It was about prospective study, descriptive of 6 months (1st March to 31st August 2014) carried out in the maternity hospitals of Faranah, Kindia, Mamou and Nzérékoré. It concerned the parturient women who had recently given birth and the personnel that carried out AMTPC/GATPA in these hospitals.Results: During the study period of 1,254 out of 1,305 births had benefited of AMTPC/GATPA, a frequency of 96.1%. The midwives were the most represented personnel in the implementation of GATPA (44.1%). In 46.4% of the cases, the health care service providers acquired this competence from the initial training. The release was obtained in the first trial in 64.9% cases. The duration of implementation of GATPA was less than 5 minutes in 72.6% cases. The different stages were respected in 91.5% cases. Complications were dominated by retention of placental fragments (10.2%). Lack of oxytocin was the main difficulty (36.6%).Conclusions: The sustainability of this achievement would depend on the systematic and correct implementation of AMTPC/GATPA at all childbirth attendants and the effective management of oxytocin

    Obstetric emergencies in the maternity ward of the Ignace Deen national hospital CHU of Conakry: sociodemographic, therapeutic and maternal fetal prognosis aspects

    Background: Despite government efforts to reduce maternal mortality, the risk of a woman dying from obstetric complications is about one in six in the poorest regions of the world compared to one in thirty thousand in North Europe. The objective was therefore to describe the clinical socio-demographic aspects and to establish the maternal and fetal prognosis of obstetric emergencies.Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional prospective study over a 6-month period from January 1 to June 30, 2020 carried out at the maternity ward of the Ignace Deen national hospital (Conakry university hospital) in Guinea. The study looked at a continuous series of 662 obstetric emergency cases.Results: The frequency of admission of obstetric emergencies was 22.62%. They concerned young women (29.5 years old) on average, first-time mothers (53.32%), with low income professional activities, evacuated from a peripheral maternity unit (63.14%), no schooling (44.9%), married (92.3%), using the more often a means of public transport (66.5%) and whose pregnancies were poorly monitored (63.9%). Fetal emergencies were dominated by acute fetal distress (91.3%) and maternal emergencies were dominated by hypertensive emergencies (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia 37.44%) followed by hemorrhagic emergencies (last trimester hemorrhage and postpartum hemorrhage 34.34%). Pregnant and parturient women were more frequently admitted to labor (62.7%) and gave birth more frequently by caesarean section (86.70%). the staff reacted promptly to make a treatment decision in 75.5% of cases within fifteen minutes. emergency procedures were performed in less than fifteen minutes in almost all cases (97.4%), specific treatment was carried out in less than an hour in the majority of cases (68.3%). The maternal case fatality rate was 4.1% with the main cause of death being hemorrhagic shock of 51.8%. The stillbirth rate was 17.4%.Conclusions: The anticipation of emergency obstetric care (SOU) and close collaboration between the obstetrician, the anesthesiologist-resuscitator are essential in the management of obstetric emergencies

    Quantifying the value of viral genomics when inferring who infected whom in the 2014–16 Ebola virus outbreak in Guinea

    Transmission trees can be established through detailed contact histories, statistical or phylogenetic inference, or a combination of methods. Each approach has its limitations, and the extent to which they succeed in revealing a 'true' transmission history remains unclear. In this study, we compared the transmission trees obtained through contact tracing investigations and various inference methods to identify the contribution and value of each approach. We studied eighty-six sequenced cases reported in Guinea between March and November 2015. Contact tracing investigations classified these cases into eight independent transmission chains. We inferred the transmission history from the genetic sequences of the cases (phylogenetic approach), their onset date (epidemiological approach), and a combination of both (combined approach). The inferred transmission trees were then compared to those from the contact tracing investigations. Inference methods using individual data sources (i.e. the phylogenetic analysis and the epidemiological approach) were insufficiently informative to accurately reconstruct the transmission trees and the direction of transmission. The combined approach was able to identify a reduced pool of infectors for each case and highlight likely connections among chains classified as independent by the contact tracing investigations. Overall, the transmissions identified by the contact tracing investigations agreed with the evolutionary history of the viral genomes, even though some cases appeared to be misclassified. Therefore, collecting genetic sequences during outbreak is key to supplement the information contained in contact tracing investigations. Although none of the methods we used could identify one unique infector per case, the combined approach highlighted the added value of mixing epidemiological and genetic information to reconstruct who infected whom

    Ring vaccination with rVSV-ZEBOV under expanded access in response to an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Guinea, 2016: an operational and vaccine safety report.

    BACKGROUND: In March, 2016, a flare-up of Ebola virus disease was reported in Guinea, and in response ring vaccination with the unlicensed rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine was introduced under expanded access, the first time that an Ebola vaccine has been used in an outbreak setting outside a clinical trial. Here we describe the safety of rVSV-ZEBOV candidate vaccine and operational feasibility of ring vaccination as a reactive strategy in a resource-limited rural setting. METHODS: Approval for expanded access and compassionate use was rapidly sought and obtained from relevant authorities. Vaccination teams and frozen vaccine were flown to the outbreak settings. Rings of contacts and contacts of contacts were defined and eligible individuals, who had given informed consent, were vaccinated and followed up for 21 days under good clinical practice conditions. FINDINGS: Between March 17 and April 21, 2016, 1510 individuals were vaccinated in four rings in Guinea, including 303 individuals aged between 6 years and 17 years and 307 front-line workers. It took 10 days to vaccinate the first participant following the confirmation of the first case of Ebola virus disease. No secondary cases of Ebola virus disease occurred among the vaccinees. Adverse events following vaccination were reported in 47 (17%) 6-17 year olds (all mild) and 412 (36%) adults (individuals older than 18 years; 98% were mild). Children reported fewer arthralgia events than adults (one [<1%] of 303 children vs 81 [7%] of 1207 adults). No severe vaccine-related adverse events were reported. INTERPRETATION: The results show that a ring vaccination strategy can be rapidly and safely implemented at scale in response to Ebola virus disease outbreaks in rural settings.     Multi-Actors' Co-Implementation of Climate-Smart Village Approach in West Africa: Achievements and Lessons Learnt

    Climate change and variability are significant challenges for the environment and food security worldwide. Development strategies focusing simultaneously on adaptive farming, productivity, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-known as climate-smart agriculture (CSA) strategies-are key to responding to these challenges. For almost a decade, within the framework of Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), World Agroforestry (ICRAF), and its partners have been using Participatory Action Research (PAR) to fully engage key stakeholders in co-creating such CSA development strategies. This includes the testing of Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) CSA scalability options. The multidisciplinary teams include the National Research and Extension Systems (NARES), national meteorological services (NMS), non-profit organizations (NGOs), and local radio programs, among others. The CCAFS-West Africa Program,World Agroforestry-West and Central Africa (ICRAF-WCA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), University of Reading, and Centre RĂ©gional de Formation et d’Application en Agro-mĂ©tĂ©orologie et Hydrologie OpĂ©rationnelle (AGRHYMET) provide technical backstopping to the national teams. Climate information (CI) was used as an entry point to inform the development of CSA technologies and practices within Climate-Smart Villages (CSV). This groundwork has led to a greater understanding of three critical factors for successful CSV implementation: (1) Building strong partnerships to co-design and develop agricultural systems that improve ecosystemand population resilience, (2) Key stakeholders (researchers, farmers, development agents, and students) capacity strengthening through vocational and academic training, and (3) Using CI for livelihood planning at all scales. These three factors support more effective identification and testing of agricultural technologies and practices addressing climate variability and change at plot, community, and landscape levels. This paper discusses the PAR-CSA methodology and parameters for evaluation, including biophysical and social change. Keys to success, including communication, knowledge sharing tools, and scalability are also discussed. Finally, future opportunities for improvement are presented, including knowledge product development, CSA policy and investment planning, capacity building, further engagement of the private sector, and additional research on existing practices and tools

    Determinants of Transmission Risk During the Late Stage of the West African Ebola Epidemic.

    Understanding risk factors for Ebola transmission is key for effective prediction and design of interventions. We used data on 860 cases in 129 chains of transmission from the latter half of the 2013-2016 Ebola epidemic in Guinea. Using negative binomial regression, we determined characteristics associated with the number of secondary cases resulting from each infected individual. We found that attending an Ebola treatment unit was associated with a 38% decrease in secondary cases (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0.62, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38, 0.99) among individuals that did not survive. Unsafe burial was associated with a higher number of secondary cases (IRR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.10, 3.02). The average number of secondary cases was higher for the first generation of a transmission chain (mean = 1.77) compared with subsequent generations (mean = 0.70). Children were least likely to transmit (IRR = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.21, 0.57) compared with adults, whereas older adults were associated with higher numbers of secondary cases. Men were less likely to transmit than women (IRR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.55, 0.93). This detailed surveillance data set provided an invaluable insight into transmission routes and risks. Our analysis highlights the key role that age, receiving treatment, and safe burial played in the spread of EVD

    The Tarat aquifer provides drinking water for the population of the city of Arlit and also provides water to industries. The exploitation of this aquifer has considerably increased in recent years. The main objective of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of the functioning of the Tarat aquifer. Thus, a methodological approach focusing mainly on the piezometric study and the analysis of evolution and estimation of the volumes of water pumped, since its development from 1969 to 2012, which has resulted in highlighting not only a general decline in the level of the Tarat aquifer, but also the piezometer level (Arli_182), reacts strongly to the solicitations of the aquifer. On this same piezometer, the water table was lowered by 30 m from 1980 to 2006 (26 years), so a drawdown of 0.86 /year
