Global warming increases the frequency of river floods in Europe

    Get PDF
EURO-CORDEX, a new generation of downscaled climate projections, has become available for climate change impact studies in Europe. New opportunities arise in the investigation of potential effects of a warmer world on meteorological and hydrological extremes at regional scales. In this work, an ensemble of EURO-CORDEX RCP 8.5 scenarios is used to drive a distributed hydrological model and assess the projected changes in flood hazard in Europe through the current century. Changes in magnitude and frequency of extreme streamflow events are investigated by statistical distribution fitting and peak over threshold analysis. A consistent method is proposed to evaluate the agreement of ensemble projections. Results indicate that the change in frequency of discharge extremes is likely to have a larger impact on the overall flood hazard as compared to the change in their magnitude. On average in Europe, flood peaks with return period above 100 years are projected to double in frequency within a time range of three decades.JRC.H.7-Climate Risk Managemen

Energy use efficiency of livestock farms in a mountain area of Sicily

The research aimed to evaluate the performance (in terms of energy) of livestock farms located in a Mediterranean mountain area and characterized by different stocking rates. Farm data were collected from in-person interviews of farmers of 58 farms representative of the livestock farms of the Madonie and Nebrodi mountains area (Sicily, Italy), including several parameters related to farm characteristics, animal, crop and pasture management. The farm parameters were used to calculate input and output energy values from which agroecosystem performance indicators were derived. Increasing stocking rate corresponded to a more than proportional increase in total inputs per unit area because of a greater farm dependence on external energy sources derived from agriculture (mainly for concentrate feed) and to a lower energy use efficiency. The indicator of dependence on non-renewable energy sources was, on average, very low irrespective of stocking rate. As stocking rate increased the farm autonomy indicator fell and the immediate removal indicator increased. Overall, the best agroecosystem performance in terms of energy was found on farms with lower stocking rates, higher proportions of permanent pastures to total farm area, and longer periods of exclusive grazing

validation of a decision making strategy for systolic anterior motion following mitral valve repair

Low cardiac output syndrome and hypotension are dreadful consequences of systolic anterior motion (SAM) after a mitral valve (MV) repair. The management of SAM in the operating room remains controversial. We validate a recently suggested two-step management method and classification of this complication. This was a teaching hospital-based observational study. We validated a novel two-step conservative management method, consisting in intravascular volume expansion and discontinuation of inotropic drugs (step 1), and increasing the afterload by ascending aorta manual compression while administering esmolol e.v. (step 2). We also validate a novel classification of SAM: easy-to-revert (responding to step 1), difficult-to-revert (responding to step 2), or persistent. Fifty patients had an easy-to-revert while 26 had a difficult-to-revert SAM; 4 patients had a persistent condition (promptly diagnosed through our decisional algorithm) and underwent an immediate second pump run to repeat the mitral repair surgery. We confirmed that SAM after a repair of a degenerative MV is common and validated a simple two-step conservative management method that allows to clearly identify those few patients who require immediate surgical revision

A phytochemical study has been carried out on the surface exudate of Salvia x jamensis, which showed a significant platelet antiaggregating activity. The known compounds isopimaric acid (2), 14-α-hydroxy-isopimaric acid (3), 3β-hydroxy-isopimaric acid (4), 7,8β-dihydrosalviacoccin (5), betulinic acid (6), and ursolic acid (7) were isolated together with the new diterpene 1. The structure of 1 was determined as 15,16-epoxy-cleroda-3-en-7α,10β-dihydroxy-12,17;19,18-diolide on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis. Among all tested compounds, 2 showed a significant concentration-dependent antiaggregating activity when ADP (3 μM) was used as agonist on rat platelets. Conversely, 1 increased ADP–induced platelet aggregation

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L) is becoming an increasingly important crop in the developed world especially as a cereal grain option for patients with celiac disease, being also characterized by a high level of bioactive compounds. It is a good source of phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids and condensed tannins, that express antioxidant capacity and potential health benefits. A group of 210 sorghum genotypes was evaluated in terms of physical parameters and resulted to be characterized by a wide range of 1000-seeds weight (6.93 - 42.67 g) and kernel colour. A sub-set of 121 samples were selected by near infrared spectroscopy for chemical analyses, and revealed a wide range of variability for total antioxidant capacity (6.89 - 172.02 mmol TE kg-1 dm-1), phenols (0.60 - 20.73 g GAE kg-1 dm-1), condensed tannins (0 - 28,362.63 ÎĽg CE g-1 dm-1) and flavonoids (0 - 8,138.22 ÎĽg CE g-1 dm-1). A high negative correlation was observed between antioxidant compounds and the colour parameters L* and b*; on the contrary, correlation of the same parameters with a* was low and positive. The results of these preliminary analyses highlighted genotypes characterized by light-coloured grains (white or yellow), large seeds, high antioxidant properties but absence of condensed tannins, all traits which make them suitable for food industry

Development and validation of a multidimensional motivations to study abroad scale (MMSAS) among European credit mobility students

    Get PDF
The aim was to establish and validate the Multidimensional Motivations to Study Abroad Scale (MMSAS) to measure university Credit Mobility Students’ (CMSs) reasons (e.g., academic, cross-cultural, personal growth) for studying abroad. The instrument was administered to a multi-language sample of 1333 European CMSs. The final measure included 27 items. Results supported nine factors for the English (both for native English speakers and the version for non-native English speakers), French, German, Italian, and Spanish versions; invariance across languages was demonstrated and evidence for construct validity is provided. Further research should explore the relevance of this measure to other populations (e.g., other languages, degree mobility students) and determine the relationship with students’ experiences and behaviours abroad. Spectral morphological analysis of skin lesions with a polarization multispectral dermoscope.

Dermoscopy is the conventional technique used for the clinical inspection of human skin lesions. However, the identification of diagnostically relevant morphologies can become a complex task. We report on the development of a polarization multispectral dermoscope for the in vivo imaging of skin lesions. Linearly polarized illumination at three distinct spectral regions (470, 530 and 625 nm), is performed by high luminance LEDs. Processing of the acquired images, by means of spectral and polarization filtering, produces new contrast images, each one specific for melanin absorption, hemoglobin absorption, and single scattering. Analysis of such images could facilitate the identification of pathological morphologies. (C) 2013 Optical Society of Americ

Similar long-term results of mitral valve repair for anterior compared with posterior leaflet prolapse

    Get PDF
ObjectiveThe results of mitral valve repair for anterior leaflet prolapse have been less gratifying than those reported for posterior leaflet prolapse. We compared the long-term durability of 2 different surgical techniques: the edge-to-edge repair, which is used for the treatment of anterior leaflet prolapse, and quadrangular resection, which has been adopted for correction of posterior leaflet prolapse.MethodsFrom 1991 through April 2004, 133 patients with anterior leaflet prolapse and 605 with posterior leaflet prolapse caused by degenerative mitral disease underwent valve repair. The edge-to-edge repair was used for correction of anterior leaflet prolapse, and quadrangular resection of the posterior leaflet, with or without sliding plasty, was used for correction of posterior leaflet prolapse. All patients received a concomitant annuloplasty procedure.ResultsNo hospital deaths occurred in the anterior leaflet prolapse group, whereas 2 (0.3%) patients died in the posterior leaflet prolapse group (P = .7). Follow-up was 100% and 97.2% complete in the anterior and posterior leaflet prolapse groups, respectively. At 10 years, overall survival was 91% ± 4.06% for anterior leaflet prolapse and 93.5% ± 1.81% for posterior leaflet prolapse (P = .18), and freedom from cardiac death was 95.8% ± 2.83% for anterior leaflet prolapse and 97.4% ± 0.95% posterior leaflet prolapse (P = .27). Freedom from reoperation was 96% ± 2.3% in the anterior leaflet prolapse group and 96.5% ± 1.18% in the posterior leaflet prolapse group (P = .37). At follow-up (mean, 4.5 ± 3.12 years; range, 1 month-13.2 years), New York Heart Association functional class I or II was documented in 93.2% of patients in the anterior leaflet prolapse group and 92.8% in the posterior leaflet prolapse group (P = .98).ConclusionsThe long-term results of the edge-to-edge repair in the setting of anterior leaflet prolapse are similar to those obtained with quadrangular resection for the treatment of posterior leaflet prolapse
