Secretory carcinoma of breast in a 17-year-old male

Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Secretory carcinoma of the male breast (juvenile carcinoma) is a rare neoplasm. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report here a case in a 17-year old male presenting with recurrent breast swelling. CONCLUSIONS: Though considered an indolent neoplasm, secretory carcinoma does metastasise to lymph nodes and recur after local excision. Surgery in form of mastectomy with axillary clearance is the treatment of choice

Laparoscopic repair of high rectovaginal fistula: Is it technically feasible?

Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Rectovaginal fistula (RVF) is an epithelium-lined communication between the rectum and vagina. Most RVFs are acquired, the most common cause being obstetric trauma. Most of the high RVFs are repaired by conventional open surgery. Laparoscopic repair of RVF is rare and so far only one report is available in the literature. METHODS: We present a case of high RVF repaired by laparoscopy. 56-year-old female who had a high RVF following laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy was successfully operated laparoscopically. Here we describe the operative technique and briefly review the literature. RESULTS: The postoperative period of the patient was uneventful and after a follow up of 6 months no recurrence was found. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic repair of high RVF is feasible in selected patients but would require proper identification of tissue planes and good laparoscopic suturing technique

MARVEL Analysis of the Measured High-Resolution Rovibronic Spectra of 90Zr16O

Zirconium oxide(ZrO) is an important astrophysical molecule that defines the S-star classification class for cool giant stars. Accurate, empirical rovibronic energy levels, with associated labels and uncertainties, are reported for 9 low-lying electronic states of the diatomic 90Zr16O molecule. These 8088 empirical energy levels are determined using the Marvel (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) algorithm with 23 317 input assigned transition frequencies, 22 549 of which were validated. A temperature-dependent partition function is presented alongside updated spectroscopic constants for the 9 low-lying electronic states

Apoptosis is increased and cell proliferation is decreased in out-of-phase endometria from infertile and recurrent abortion patients

Various endometrial abnormalities have been associated with luteal phase deficiency: a significant dyssynchrony in the maturation of the glandular epithelium and the stroma and a prevalence of out-of-phase endometrial biopsy specimens. Out-of phase endometrium is a controversial disorder related to failed implantation, infertility and early pregnancy loss. Given that the regulation of the apoptotic process in endometrium of luteal phase deficiency is still unknown, the aim of this study was to evaluate cell proliferation, apoptosis and the levels of the main effector caspase, caspase-3 in the luteal in-phase and out-of-phase endometrium.Fil: Meresman, Gabriela Fabiana. Real-time In-Situ Passive Acoustic Array Beamforming from the AutoNaut Wave-Propelled Uncrewed Surface Vessel

This article presents the first demonstration of beamforming, detection, and bearing estimation of an underwater acoustic source from an eight-element thin line hydrophone array towed behind the AutoNaut wave-propelled uncrewed surface vessel. This has been achieved in situ and in real time during an experimental sea trial off the coast of Plymouth, U.K. A controlled acoustic source was towed from a support vessel while emitting seven tonals with frequencies between 480–1630 Hz and source levels between 93–126 dB. This allowed the detection performance of the array to be assessed and demonstrated for an acoustic source with known bearing and range. In postprocessing, the shape of the array was estimated using a cubic spline model, exploiting measurements from pressure and three-axis compass sensors integrated at each end of the array. The beamforming was repeated using the estimated array shape to infer the hydrophone positions, which resulted in a median improvement of 0.38 dB and maximum of 5.8 dB in the MUSIC beamforming output, and a potential reduction in the left/right bearing estimation ambiguities. The outcomes of this work demonstrate that the AutoNaut is an effective platform for towed array passive acoustic monitoring.</p

Structural colour from helicoidal cell-wall architecture in fruits of Margaritaria nobilis

Get PDF
The bright and intense blue-green coloration of the fruits of Margaritaria nobilis (Phyllanthaceae) was investigated using polarization-resolved spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Optical measurements of freshly collected fruits revealed a strong circularly polarized reflection of the fruit that originates from a cellulose helicoidal cell wall structure in the pericarp cells. Hyperspectral microscopy was used to capture the iridescent effect at the single-cell level.Leverhulme Trust (F/09-741/G)United States.
