PERSONAL AND/OR VICARIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH CANCER AS A PREDICTOR OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: MODERATING EFFECTS OF GENDER AND RISK PERCEPTION

Get PDF
Background: Few studies have addressed the relationship between an individual\u27s type of experience with cancer and its relationship with physical activity (PA). Furthermore, studies have not addressed gender and risk perception\u27s ability to moderate the relationship between cancer experience and physical activity. To address this gap in understanding modifiable factors that might help or hinder PA levels, the overarching goal of this study is to: (a) estimate the degree to which an individual\u27s experience of cancer effects PA levels, (b) determine how strongly gender moderates the relationship between the experience of cancer and PA levels, and (c) determine how strongly risk perception moderates the relationship between the experience of cancer and PA levels. Design: The data was gathered from items in the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS5), which is a nationally representative survey conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI, 2017). Results: One major finding of this study is that personal experiences with cancer had a significant relation with PA. Conclusions: In this particular sample, an individual\u27s gender or risk perception did not increase physical activity levels, but it has been shown in other studies to increase preventive behaviors, such as PA (Wang & Coups, 2010). These results can lead to finding strategies and/or interventions to increase an individual\u27s motivation to engage in physical activity

Leptonic and Semileptonic Decays of Pseudoscalar Mesons

Get PDF
We employ the relativistic constituent quark model to give a unified description of the leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons (\pi, K, D, D_s, B, B_s). The calculated leptonic decay constants and form factors are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data and other approaches. We reproduce the results of spin-flavor symmetry in the heavy quark limit.Comment: 12 pages LaTeX (elsart.sty) + 4 figures; added references, to appear in Phys. Lett.

More on the Narrowing of Impact Broadened Radio Recombination Lines at High Principal Quantum Number

Recently Alexander and Gulyaev have suggested that the apparent decrease in impact broadening of radio recombination lines seen at high principal quantum number n may be a product of the data reduction process, possibly resulting from the presence of noise on the telescope spectra that is not present on the calculated comparison spectra. This is an interesting proposal. However, there are serious problems with their analysis that need to be pointed out. Perhaps the most important of these is the fact that for principal quantum numbers below n = 200, where the widths are not in question, their processed generated profile widths do not fit the widths of the processed lines obtained at the telescope. After processing, the halfwidths of the generated and telescope profiles must agree below n = 200 if we are to believe that the processed generated linewidths above n = 200 are meaningful. Theirs do not. Furthermore, we find that after applying the linewidth reduction factors found by Alexander and Gulyaev for their noise added profiles to our generated profiles to simulate their noise adding effect, the processed widths we obtain still do not come close to explaining the narrowing seen in the telescope lines for n values in the range 200 < n < 250. It is concluded that what is needed to solve this mystery is a completely new approach using a different observing technique instead of simply a further manipulation of the frequency-switched data.Comment: Six pages with 4 figures. Dynamic stability of long axisymmetric liquid bridges

Get PDF
This paper deals with the non-linear forced oscillations of axisymmetric long liquid bridges between equal disks. The dynamics of the liquid bridge has been analyzed by using a self-similar, one-dimensional model already used in similar problems. The influence of the dynamics on the static stability limits, as well as the main characteristics of the non-linear behaviour of long liquid bridges, have been studied with in the range of validity of the mathematical model used here

Transverse instability and its long-term development for solitary waves of the (2+1)-Boussinesq equation

Get PDF
The stability properties of line solitary wave solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional Boussinesq equation with respect to transverse perturbations and their consequences are considered. A geometric condition arising from a multi-symplectic formulation of this equation gives an explicit relation between the parameters for transverse instability when the transverse wavenumber is small. The Evans function is then computed explicitly, giving the eigenvalues for transverse instability for all transverse wavenumbers. To determine the nonlinear and long time implications of transverse instability, numerical simulations are performed using pseudospectral discretization. The numerics confirm the analytic results, and in all cases studied, transverse instability leads to collapse.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.

Kata Kunci: Pengembangan; Istana Maimoon; SWOT Abstract: Maimoon Palace is one of the historic Tourist Attractions in Medan City, inside there is unique Malay architecture, royal historical relics, photos of the Sultan of the Deli Kingdom, attractions for renting Malay Traditional clothes, live Malay music performances, and souvenirs. Maimoon Palace in reality still does not reach the standards of the overall attraction aspect, there are only a few attractions that can be enjoyed Maimoon Palace as one of the Cultural Heritage in Medan City must be preserved, cared for, and maintained, therefore the author sees a problem in the lack of the development of the Maimoon Palace in order to attract tourists to visit and provide benefits to the livelihoods of the surrounding community, the authors are interested in conducting research with the title Maimoon Palace Development Strategy, Medan City, North Sumatra. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a survey approach method. The development strategy is carried out by involving the Government, Management, and the Community. Allegedly with the development strategy implemented there, there will be opportunities for them to maximize themselves and their potential. Thus, it becomes a lesson for the community to accept and participate in supporting the development of Maimoon Palace. Keywords: Development; Istana Maimoon; SWO

Investigating the DNA-Binding Site for VirB, a Key Transcriptional Regulator of Shigella Virulence Genes, Using an In Vivo Binding Tool

Get PDF
The transcriptional anti-silencing and DNA-binding protein, VirB, is essential for the virulence of Shigella species and, yet, sequences required for VirB-DNA binding are poorly understood. While a 7-8 bp VirB-binding site has been proposed, it was derived from studies at a single VirB-dependent promoter, icsB. Our previous in vivo studies at a different VirB-dependent promoter, icsP, found that the proposed VirB-binding site was insufficient for regulation. Instead, the required site was found to be organized as a near-perfect inverted repeat separated by a single nucleotide spacer. Thus, the proposed 7-8 bp VirB-binding site needed to be re-evaluated. Here, we engineer and validate a molecular tool to capture protein-DNA binding interactions in vivo. Our data show that a sequence organized as a near-perfect inverted repeat is required for VirB-DNA binding interactions in vivo at both the icsB and icsP promoters. Furthermore, the previously proposed VirB-binding site and multiple sites found as a result of its description (i.e., sites located at the virB, virF, spa15, and virA promoters) are not sufficient for VirB to bind in vivo using this tool. The implications of these findings are discussed

Studies on factors in beef cattle production in a subtropical environment. 1. Birth weight

Data from 502 calves from 244 cows during the years 1954-1957 at "Brian Pastures" Pasture Research Station of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock were analysed. The effects of sex, year of birth, age of dam, weight of dam and time of birth on birth weight were evaluated. The mean birth weight of all calves was 70·4 lb. The male calves weighed 4·7 lb. more than the female calves, the difference being significant. Significant year differences were recorded due to the marked lowering of birth weight following the 1957 drought. First-calf heifers gave birth to calves which were 4 lb. lighter than those of mature cows. Weight of dam was significantly related to birth weight and was associated with approximately 6 per cent. of the variation in birth weight of the calf. Time of calving, in a 3-month calving period, also was significantly related to birth weight but was only associated with 3 per cent. of the variation in the birth weight of the calf
