Home visits: a reflection on family contact in a specialist forensic intellectual disability service

Purpose – There is little published literature about the number of home visits provided to patients within forensic intellectual disability units, and there is no published data on variables that affect home visits. There is a need for a baseline audit that can formulate standards for future practice. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes the home visit programme within a forensic intellectual disability service, and a baseline audit of the programme. The audit measured the number of home visits, any factors that adversely affect home visits, and the extent of family contact. The authors propose audit standards for evaluation of good practice in this area. Findings – The audit involved 63 patients over a one-year period. In total, 81 per cent of patients had some form of family contact and 54 per cent of patients at least one home visit. However, 19 per cent of patients had no contact with their family due to a variety of reasons. There were no significant differences in the number of home visits between men and women, patients on civil vs criminal sections or those treated “within area” or “out of area”. Patients in rehabilitation wards had significantly more visits than those in low or medium secure. Originality/value – Conventional wisdom is that reduced family contact is the direct result of patients being placed “out of area”. The results of this audit suggest that, at least in this group, the reasons may be much more nuanced and that the current definition of “out of area” has to be improved to incorporate the actual distance between the patient’s current family home and the service. Audit standards have been proposed to monitor family contact and home visits. Future work should focus on the relationship between family contact and treatment outcomes

International Taxation and Initial Foreign Entries

In a global business environment, U.S. firms look towards expansion as a way to stay competitive in the market place. When deciding where to expand, U.S. firms analyze a variety of factors ranging from market size and demographics to location. Research has shown that foreign taxes affect FDI, however, other research shows that many companies are not taking the necessary tax planning steps. Using a combination of survey and secondary data, I analyze the effect of statutory tax rates on firm’s initial entries – where (to which country), how (using which entry modes), and when (how soon after firm founding). Early results suggest that statutory tax rates influence where firms make their first entry, but not when. Contrary to prior research, I do not find an effect of tax rates on mode of entry

College Esports: Grassroots Hobby Turned Unregulated Industry

When traditional sports teams formed on college campuses, it took decades before they looked anything like college sports teams do today. College football is noted as beginning in 1869 (Parlier, 2022), NCAA formed in 1906, and the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision launched in 1978 (NCAA, 2023). In 2009, one of the first recorded college esports matches took place. In 2014, Robert Morris Universty started the first varsity-level college esports program. Now, there are an estimated 500 college esports programs amassing thousands of student participants. It took decades, if not a century, for college football to achieve these numbers. For an area that is seeing exponential growth, there is a lack of resources, structure, and research in college esports. College esports is expanding rapidly due to the digital age, and its stakeholders struggle to keep up. The research involves a review of existing literature and current regulations as well as conducting a series of one-on-one interviews with six college esports professionals. College esports lacks a governing entity (like the NCAA) causing a lack of agreed upon standards. The landscape is currently fragmented; there is little to no consensus to be seen on the basic regulations, structure, and terminology. Interview subjects noted frustrations with inconsistencies in competition regulation and nonstandardized models of operation for esports organizations. In order for college esports to achieve its full potential, stakeholders need to find a way to standardize operations and regulations surrounding competition, compensation, expectations, and eligibility

Some new canonical forms for polynomials

We give some new canonical representations for forms over \cc. For example, a general binary quartic form can be written as the square of a quadratic form plus the fourth power of a linear form. A general cubic form in (x1,...,xn)(x_1,...,x_n) can be written uniquely as a sum of the cubes of linear forms ℓij(xi,...,xj)\ell_{ij}(x_i,...,x_j), 1≤i≤j≤n1 \le i \le j \le n. A general ternary quartic form is the sum of the square of a quadratic form and three fourth powers of linear forms. The methods are classical and elementary.Comment: I have spoken about this material under the title "steampunk canonical forms". This is the final revised version which has been accepted by the Pacific Journal of Mathematics. Apart from the usual improvements which come after a thoughtful refereeing, Theorem 1.8 is ne

According to the 2015 Bureau of Labor Statistics, nationally, students with disabilities are less likely to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and more likely to be unemployed.1 At VCU, these students are served by the Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity Office (SAEO), which currently has only two case managers for 1500 registered students while the Association for Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD) recommends an individual case load of 350 or fewer students. While these students attend New Student Orientation, there are currently no programs or sessions specifically designed to address their needs. RamStart is a model for presemester transition workshops for new students who have been granted accommodations through SAEO for disabilities and their families which is designed to provide them with tools for self-advocacy and independence. The goal of these workshops is to help ease the students’ transition to VCU by educating them and their parents about SAEO’s services, their rights and responsibilities, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), campus resources, and University policies and procedures to improve their chances of success
