Performance Prediction of Nonbinary Forward Error Correction in Optical Transmission Experiments

    Get PDF
In this paper, we compare different metrics to predict the error rate of optical systems based on nonbinary forward error correction (FEC). It is shown that the correct metric to predict the performance of coded modulation based on nonbinary FEC is the mutual information. The accuracy of the prediction is verified in a detailed example with multiple constellation formats, FEC overheads in both simulations and optical transmission experiments over a recirculating loop. It is shown that the employed FEC codes must be universal if performance prediction based on thresholds is used. A tutorial introduction into the computation of the threshold from optical transmission measurements is also given.Comment: submitted to IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technolog

A LIMS-less System for Genotyping Data in Marker-Assisted Selection

    Get PDF
Climate change and feeding the growing human population are two tightly intertwined problems we face now. Innovations across several agricultural sectors are needed to meet these challenges as we proceed into the future. Seed companies and plant breeders are at the forefront of producing new plant varieties that must survive under the unique stresses of extreme weather patterns caused by changing climates. This project aims to provide breeders with faster marker results by streamlining the data process of marker-assisted selection (MAS). Manually managing genotyping data in MAS can take several hours or days to compile results for breeders. Although some solutions have been deploying laboratory information management systems (LIMS), they are often excessive, expensive, and add more steps to workflows in MAS labs. MASLGenerator and SPLi4MKGTR are two programs created in this project as an alternative to commercial LIMS systems. These tools facilitate and increase the rate of data generation for MAS. Keywords

One-year client impacts of quality of care improvements achieved in Peru

    Get PDF
This report presents a one-year assessment of quality-of-care improvements in Peru, following provider training on the job aids–assisted Balanced Counseling Strategy. Results showed significant enhancement of quality of care, an increase in session length, and improved client knowledge of the method chosen when this was an IUD or hormonal method. Correlational findings suggested that better impacts can be achieved in provincial primary health facilities than in larger settings like clinics or hospitals in capital cities. The results are important because: 1) other studies have failed to show significant impacts of controlled quality-of-care improvements on the use of contraception; and 2) the Balanced Counseling Strategy was not implemented to its full extent. Greater impacts can be expected when the Strategy’s potential is fully realized

A deep learning approach to identify unhealthy advertisements in street view images

While outdoor advertisements are common features within towns and cities, they may reinforce social inequalities in health. Vulnerable populations in deprived areas may have greater exposure to fast food, gambling and alcohol advertisements, which may encourage their consumption. Understanding who is exposed and evaluating potential policy restrictions requires a substantial manual data collection effort. To address this problem we develop a deep learning workflow to automatically extract and classify unhealthy advertisements from street-level images. We introduce the Liverpool 360 ∘ Street View (LIV360SV) dataset for evaluating our workflow. The dataset contains 25,349, 360 degree, street-level images collected via cycling with a GoPro Fusion camera, recorded Jan 14th–18th 2020. 10,106 advertisements were identified and classified as food (1335), alcohol (217), gambling (149) and other (8405). We find evidence of social inequalities with a larger proportion of food advertisements located within deprived areas and those frequented by students. Our project presents a novel implementation for the incidental classification of street view images for identifying unhealthy advertisements, providing a means through which to identify areas that can benefit from tougher advertisement restriction policies for tackling social inequalities. © 2021, The Author(s)
