    Estimating snow cover from publicly available images

    In this paper we study the problem of estimating snow cover in mountainous regions, that is, the spatial extent of the earth surface covered by snow. We argue that publicly available visual content, in the form of user generated photographs and image feeds from outdoor webcams, can both be leveraged as additional measurement sources, complementing existing ground, satellite and airborne sensor data. To this end, we describe two content acquisition and processing pipelines that are tailored to such sources, addressing the specific challenges posed by each of them, e.g., identifying the mountain peaks, filtering out images taken in bad weather conditions, handling varying illumination conditions. The final outcome is summarized in a snow cover index, which indicates for a specific mountain and day of the year, the fraction of visible area covered by snow, possibly at different elevations. We created a manually labelled dataset to assess the accuracy of the image snow covered area estimation, achieving 90.0% precision at 91.1% recall. In addition, we show that seasonal trends related to air temperature are captured by the snow cover index.Comment: submitted to IEEE Transactions on Multimedi

    Textual and content-based search in repositories of Web application models

    Model-driven engineering relies on collections of models, which are the primary artifacts for software development. To enable knowledge sharing and reuse, models need to be managed within repositories, where they can be retrieved upon users’ queries. This article examines two different techniques for indexing and searching model repositories, with a focus on Web development projects encoded in a domain-specific language. Keyword-based and content-based search (also known as query-by-example) are contrasted with respect to the architecture of the system, the processing of models and queries, and the way in which metamodel knowledge can be exploited to improve search. A thorough experimental evaluation is conducted to examine what parameter configurations lead to better accuracy and to offer an insight in what queries are addressed best by each system.</jats:p

    Standalone vertex finding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Fatal metformin overdose: case report and postmortem biochemistry contribution

    Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lactic acidosis from metformin overdose is a rare complication of metformin therapy and occurs infrequently with therapeutic use. Fatal cases, both accidental and intentional, are extremely rare in clinical practice. Metformin is eliminated by the kidneys, and impaired renal function can result in an increased plasma concentration of the drug. In this report, we describe an autopsy case involving a 70-year-old woman suffering from diabetes mellitus and impaired renal function who received metformin treatment. Metformin concentrations in the peripheral blood collected during hospitalization and femoral blood collected during autopsy were 42 and 47.3µg/ml, respectively. Lactic acidosis (29.10mmol/l) was objectified during hospitalization. Furthermore, postmortem biochemistry allowed ketoacidosis to be diagnosed (blood β-hydroxybutyrate, 10,500µmol/l). Death was attributed to lactic acidosis due to metformin intoxication. Increased plasma concentrations of the drug were attributed to severely impaired renal function. The case emphasizes the usefulness of performing exhaustive toxicology and postmortem biochemistry towards the more complete understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms that may be involved in the death process

    Reconstruction of primary vertices at the ATLAS experiment in Run 1 proton–proton collisions at the LHC

    This paper presents the method and performance of primary vertex reconstruction in proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 1 of the LHC. The studies presented focus on data taken during 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV. The performance has been measured as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing over a wide range, from one to seventy. The measurement of the position and size of the luminous region and its use as a constraint to improve the primary vertex resolution are discussed. A longitudinal vertex position resolution of about 30μm is achieved for events with high multiplicity of reconstructed tracks. The transverse position resolution is better than 20μm and is dominated by the precision on the size of the luminous region. An analytical model is proposed to describe the primary vertex reconstruction efficiency as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing and of the longitudinal size of the luminous region. Agreement between the data and the predictions of this model is better than 3% up to seventy interactions per bunch crossing

    Search for dark matter in events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at s√= 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search is presented for dark matter pair production in association with a W or Z boson in pp collisions representing 20.3  fb−1 of integrated luminosity at s√=8  TeV using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a hadronic jet with the jet mass consistent with a W or Z boson, and with large missing transverse momentum are analyzed. The data are consistent with the standard model expectations. Limits are set on the mass scale in effective field theories that describe the interaction of dark matter and standard model particles, and on the cross section of Higgs production and decay to invisible particles. In addition, cross section limits on the anomalous production of W or Z bosons with large missing transverse momentum are set in two fiducial regions.We thank CERN for the very successful operation of the LHC, as well as the support staff from our institutions without whom ATLAS could not be operated efficiently.     Quantitative dopamine transporter imaging assessment in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients carrying GBA gene mutations compared with Idiopathic PD patients: A case-control study

    Background: Genetic risk factors impact around 15% of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and at least 23 variants have been identified including Glucocerebrosidase (GBA) gene variants. Using different clinical and instrumental qualitative-based data, various studies have been published on GBA-PD cohorts which suggested possible differences in dopaminergic nigrostriatal denervation pattern, particularly in caudate and putamen nuclei. Methods: This retrospective study included two consecutive homogenous cohorts of GBA-PD and idiopathic (I-PD) patients. Each consecutive GBA-PD patient has been matched with a 1:1 pairing method with a consecutive I-PD subject according to age, age at disease onset, sex, Hoehn &amp; Yahr (H&amp;Y) staging scale and comorbidity level (CCI). Semiquantitative volumetric data by the DaTQUANTTM software integrated in the DaTSCAN exam performed at time of the diagnosis (SPECT imaging performed according to current guidelines of I-123 FPCIT SPECT imaging) were extrapolated. Bilateral specific binding ratios (SBR) at putamen and caudate levels were calculated, using the occipital lobes uptake. The Mann–Whitney test was performed to compare the two cohorts while the Spearman’s test was used to find correlations between motor and volumetric data in each group. Bonferroni correction was used to account for multiple comparisons. Results: Two cohorts of 25 patients each (GBA-PD and I-PD), were included. By comparing GBA-PD and I-PD patients, lower SBR values were found in the most affected anterior putamen and left caudate of the GBA-PD cohort. Furthermore, in the GBA-PD cohort the SBR of the most affected posterior putamen negatively correlated with the H&amp;Y scale. However, none of these differences or correlations remained significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: We observed differences in SBR values in GBA-PD patients compared with I-PD. However, these differences were no longer significant after Bonferroni multiple comparisons correction highlighting the need for larger, longitudinal studies

    Data-driven optimization of search service composition for answering multi-domain queries

    Answering multi-domain queries requires the combination of knowledge from various domains. Such queries are inadequately answered by general-purpose search engines, because domain- specific systems typically exhibit sophisticated knowledge about their own fields of expertise. Moreover, multi-domain queries typically require combining in the result domain knowledge possibly coming from multiple web resources, therefore conventional crawling and indexing techniques, based on individual pages, are not adequate. In this paper we present a conceptual framework for addressing the composition of search services for solving multi-domain queries. The approach consists in building an infrastructure for search service composition that leaves within each search system the responsibility of maintaining and improving its domain knowledge, and whose main challenge is to provide the “glue” between them; such glue is expressed in the format of joins upon search service results, and for this feature we regard our approach as “data-driven”.     Cerebral amyloid-β deposition, axial features, and cognitive alterations in patients with Parkinson’s disease treated with bilateral STN-DBS: A long-term cohort study

    Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the possible long-term cerebral deposition of amyloid-β in patients with PD treated with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) and its possible influence on axial and cognitive variables. Methods: Consecutive PD patients treated with bilateral STN-DBS with a long-term follow-up were included. The amyloid-β deposition was evaluated postoperatively through an 18F-flutemetamol positron emission tomography (PET) study. Axial symptoms were assessed using a standardized clinical–instrumental approach. The speech was assessed by perceptual and acoustic analysis, while gait was assessed by means of the instrumented Timed Up and Go test (iTUG). Motor severity was evaluated by applying the UPDRS part III score and subscores, while cognitive functions were assessed through a complete neuropsychological assessment. Different stimulation and drug conditions were assessed: on-stimulation/off-medication, off-stimulation/off-medication, and on-stimulation/on-medication conditions (single- and dual-task). Results: In total, 19 PD patients (male: 11; age: 63. 52 years; on-stimulation/on-medication UPDRS-III: 17.05) with a five-year postoperative follow-up were included. The amyloid-β deposition was found in 21% of patients (4/19) with a prevalent involvement of prefrontal, limbic, and parietal areas. Compared with patients without amyloid-β deposition, PD patients with positive 18F-flutemetamol in the PET study showed a higher preoperative UPDRS-I (p = 0.037) score. Conclusions: Our results suggest that in the long term, after STN-DBS, a significant percentage of PD patients may present brain amyloid-β deposition. However, larger samples are needed to evaluate the possible role of amyloid-β deposition in the development of axial and cognitive alterations after surgery
