    Design of flux-weakening space vector control algorithms for permanent magnet brushless DC machines on suitable synchronous reference frames

    The design of Space Vector Control (SVC) systems suitable for flux-weakening operation of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Machines (PMBDCMs) is presented in this paper. The proposed design approach enables overcoming the critical issues arising from the non-linearities of PMBDCM voltage and torque equations; these issues derive from the trapezoidal shapes of back-emfs and affect PMBDCM constraint management significantly. The SVCs presented in this paper have been developed within two different synchronous reference frames, both of which enable distinguishing torque and demagnetizing current components clearly. Therefore, reference torque current component is determined in accordance with PMBDCM torque demand, while reference demagnetizing current component is computed through a voltage follower PI regulator, which processes the voltage deficit detected on the DC-link. In this regard, a novel synchronous reference frame is proposed in this paper, which improves PMBDCM constraint management and results into a wider constant-power speed range, but at the cost of some torque ripple. The enhanced performances achievable by SVC approaches are highlighted by numerical simulations, which regard the comparison among the SVCs and an SVC with no flux-weakening capability, at different operating conditions

    Design of a High-Speed Ferrite-based Brushless DC Machine for Electric Vehicles

    In the present paper an analytic procedure for the preliminary design of a High-Speed ferrite-based Brushless DC Machine (HS-BLDC) has been proposed. In particular, mechanical and electromagnetic modeling have been developed in order to take into account their mutual influence in the definition of the geometry of the electrical machine. In addition, suitable design targets have been imposed in accordance with electric vehicle application requirements. Hence, several mechanical and electromagnetic constraints have been introduced in order to comply with high-speed operation, preventing demagnetization issues of ferrite magnets as well. Subsequently, an HS-BLDC characterized by an inner rotor configuration has been designed in accordance with the proposed methodology. The analytical procedure and the corresponding results have been reported and validated by means of Finite Element Analyses (FEAs), highlighting the effectiveness of the proposed configuration and design solutions

    A case-report of a pulmonary tuberculosis with lymphadenopathy mimicking a lymphoma.

    Abstract Clinical and radiological manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) are heterogeneous, and differential diagnosis can include both benign and malignant diseases (e.g., sarcoidosis, metastatic diseases, and lymphoma). Diagnostic dilemmas can delay appropriate therapy, favoring Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission. We report on a case of TB in an immunocompetent, Somalian 22-year-old boy admitted in the respiratory unit of an Italian university hospital. His symptoms and clinical signs were thoracic pain, weight loss, latero-cervical, mediastinal, and abdominal lymphadenopathy. Smear microscopy and PCR were negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis . The unclear histological pattern, the unusual clinical presentation, the CT scan signs, the BAL lymphocytes suggested the suspicion a lymphoma. Culture conversion proved Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. This case report highlights the risk of misdiagnosis in patients with generalized lympho-adenopathy and pulmonary infiltrates, particularly in Africans young patients

    Platelet Count and Platelet Indices in Patients with Stable and Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Platelets play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by mediating thrombotic, inflammatory, and immune processes in the lung. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the platelet count and three platelet indices, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in stable COPD vs. non-COPD patients and in stable COPD vs. acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) patients (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021228263). PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched from inception to December 2020. Twenty-seven studies were included in the meta-analysis, 26 comparing 4,455 stable COPD patients with 7,128 non-COPD controls and 14 comparing 1,251 stable COPD with 904 AECOPD patients.     Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disabling condition that is characterised by poorly reversible airflow limitation and inflammation. Acute exacerbations of COPD are a common cause of hospitalisation and death among COPD patients. Several biochemical markers have been studied as outcome predictors in COPD; however, their measurement often requires significant time and resources. Relatively simple biomarkers of inflammation calculated from routine complete blood count tests, such as the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), might also predict COPD progression and outcomes. This review discusses the available evidence from studies investigating the associations between the NLR, COPD exacerbations and death in this patient group

    Arginines Plasma Concentration and Oxidative Stress in Mild to Moderate COPD

    This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Background Elevated plasma concentrations of the endogenous nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) have been observed in respiratory conditions such as asthma and cystic fibrosis. Since oxidative stress has been shown to increase the activity of arginine methylating enzymes, hence increased ADMA synthesis, and to reduce ADMA degrading enzymes, hence increased ADMA concentrations, we assessed methylated arginines concentrations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a disease characterized by increased oxidative stress. Methods Plasma arginine, ADMA and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), oxidative stress markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS, and plasma proteins SH, PSH) and antioxidants (taurine and paraoxonase 1, PON1, activity) were measured in 43 COPD patients with mild (n = 29) or moderate (n = 14) disease and 43 age- and sex-matched controls. Results TBARS significantly increased with COPD presence and severity (median 2.93 vs 3.18 vs 3.64 μmol/L, respectively in controls, mild and moderate group, p<0.0001 by ANOVA) whereas PSH decreased (6.69±1.15 vs 6.04±0.85 vs 5.33±0.96 μmol/gr prot, p<0.0001 by ANOVA). Increased ADMA/arginine ratio, primarily due to reduced arginine concentrations, was also observed with COPD presence and severity (median 0.0067 vs 0.0075 vs 0.0100, p<0.0001 by ANOVA). In multiple logistic regression analysis, only TBARS (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.25–0.77; p = 0.0045) and ADMA/Arginine ratio (OR 1.72, 95% CI 2.27–13.05; p = 0.02) were independently associated with COPD severity. Conclusion COPD presence and severity are associated with increased oxidative stress and alterations in arginine metabolism. The reduced arginine concentrations in COPD may offer a new target for therapeutic interventions increasing arginine availability

    Antioxidant Activity Mediates Pirfenidone Antifibrotic Effects in Human Pulmonary Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells Exposed to Sera of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients.

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic lung disease characterized by an exacerbated fibrotic response. Although molecular and cellular determinants involved in the onset and progression of this devastating disease are largely unknown, an aberrant remodeling of the pulmonary vasculature appears to have implications in IPF pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrated for the first time that an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation induced by sera from IPF patients drives both collagen type I deposition and proliferation of primary human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (HPASMCs). IPF sera-induced cellular effects were significantly blunted in cells exposed to the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) proving the causative role of ROS and suggesting their potential cellular source. Contrary to IPF naive patients, sera from Pirfenidone-treated IPF patients failed to significantly induce both ROS generation and collagen synthesis in HPASMCs, mechanistically implicating antioxidant properties as the basis for the in vivo effect of this drug
