Simulation of the spatial structure and cellular organization evolution of cell aggregates arranged in various simple geometries, using a kinetic monte carlo method applied to a lattice model

coherent with the differential adhesion hypothesis. A review of some models, their biological underpinning
principles, the relevance and applications in the framework of bioprinting, tissue engineering and bioconvergence
are presented. Then the details for the Monte Carlo methods-based models are presented to
later deep dive into the Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) based model, and more specifically a Self-Learning
KMC (SL-KMC) model is described to detail. The algorithmic structure of the implemented code is
presented and explained, the model performance is assessed and compared with a traditional KMC model.
Finally, the calibration and validation processes have been carried out, it was observed that the model is
able to replicate the multicellular system evolution when the interfacial energy conditions of the simulated
system are similar to those of the calibrations system.MaestríaMagíster en Ingeniería - Ingeniería Químic
Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Directed Small-World Networks
Many social, biological, and economic systems can be approached by complex
networks of interacting units. The behaviour of several models on small-world
networks has recently been studied. These models are expected to capture the
essential features of the complex processes taking place on real networks like
disease spreading, formation of public opinion, distribution of wealth, etc. In
many of these systems relations are directed, in the sense that links only act
in one direction (outwards or inwards). We investigate the effect of directed
links on the behaviour of a simple spin-like model evolving on a small-world
network. We show that directed networks may lead to a highly nontrivial phase
diagram including first and second-order phase transitions out of equilibrium.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX format, 4 postscript figs, uses eps

Effects of different post-activation potentiation warm-ups on repeated sprint ability in soccer players from different competitive levels
This study aimed to compare the effects of a traditional warm-up with two post-activation potentiation (PAP) warm-up strategies on the repeated sprint ability (RSA) of soccer players from national (NL) and regional (RL) competitive levels. Sixteen young players (NL, n = 8, age = 20.7 +/- 1.4 y, body mass = 68.5 +/- 7.0 kg, body height = 177.4 +/- 5.2 cm; RL, n = 8, age = 20.8 +/- 1.0 y, body mass = 68.7 +/- 4.0 kg, body height = 176.6 +/- 5.6 cm) were recruited to complete a traditional warm-up (CONTROL), a PAP warm-up incorporating squats with a load (similar to 60% 1RM) that allowed a high speed (1 m/s) of movement and a high number of repetitions (PAP-1), and a PAP warm-up with a load (similar to 90% 1RM) that allowed a moderate speed (0.5 m/s) of movement and a reduced number of repetitions (PAP-0.5). A RSA test (six 20-m sprints with 20 s of recovery) was performed 5 min after the PAP warm-up to assess the effects of the different protocols on the fastest sprint (RSAb) and the mean time of all sprints (RSAm). A meaningful improvement of RSA performance was observed with PAP-0.5, attaining a large effect on NL (RSAb, ES = -1.5; RSAm, ES = -1.3) and only a small effect on RL athletes (RSAb and RSAm, ES = -0.2). Moreover, when each RSA sprint performance was compared between NL and RL players, after PAP-0.5 greater performance for all sprints was observed in the NL players. Therefore, adding a heavy strength-based conditioning exercise during the warm-up prior to a RSA test may induce significant performance improvements in NL, but only small effects in RL players
The Gut Microbiota and Its Implication in the Development of Atherosclerosis and Related Cardiovascular Diseases
Julio Plaza-Díaz is part of the “UGR Plan Propio de Investigación 2016” and the “Excellence
actions: Unit of Excellence on Exercise and Health (UCEES), University of Granada”. We are grateful to Belen
Vazquez-Gonzalez for assistance with the illustration service. The importance of gut microbiota in health and disease is being highlighted by numerous
research groups worldwide. Atherosclerosis, the leading cause of heart disease and stroke,
is responsible for about 50% of all cardiovascular deaths. Recently, gut dysbiosis has been identified
as a remarkable factor to be considered in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this
review, we briefly discuss how external factors such as dietary and physical activity habits influence
host-microbiota and atherogenesis, the potential mechanisms of the influence of gut microbiota in
host blood pressure and the alterations in the prevalence of those bacterial genera affecting vascular
tone and the development of hypertension. We will also be examining the microbiota as a therapeutic
target in the prevention of CVDs and the beneficial mechanisms of probiotic administration related to
cardiovascular risks. All these new insights might lead to novel analysis and CVD therapeutics based
on the microbiota
New Approaches in Tourism Management: The Innovative Business Group Programme in Spain
This study aims to evaluate recent tourism innovation policies in Spain, specifically those that support the creation and consolidation of the Innovative Business Group (AEI, for its initials in Spanish) Programme in Tourism, its singularity, the characteristics of the resulting AEIs and the evaluation made by managers. The analysis shows the lights and shadows of the Programme and also suggests the need to reformulate these types of policies. It also highlights interesting discussion points about the innovation derived from collaborative processes in tourism.
Stellar energy loss rates beyond the standard model
It is known that the dipolemoments of the neutrino lead to important astrophysical and cosmological effects. In this regard, within the context of a U(1)B−L model, we develop and present novel analytical formulas to assess the effects of the anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment of the neutrino on the stellar energy loss rates through some common physical process of pair-annihilation e+e− → (γ, Z, Z
) → ν¯ν. Our results show that the stellar energy loss rates strongly depend on the effective magnetic moment of the neutrino, but also on the parameters which characterize the adopted U(1)B−L mode
Characterization of Landfill Leachate for Enhanced Metal Recovery
Landfills contain a trove of valuable materials, such as critical, precious, and rare earth metals, that are integral to the United State’s economy and national security. The leachate that filters through landfills picks up these materials, which allows for the possibility of recovery. For this research, samples will be analyzed from landfills throughout the Midwestern United States to provide a baseline on water quality constituents, elements present, and microbial activity. Preliminary data for this study was acquired by analyzing samples of landfill leachate from a landfill in northern Indiana. pH readings indicate that the leachate is slightly basic. It also contains around 1-2% total solids. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was also used to identify elements present in the samples. Of the 66 elements considered in the analysis, 35 were detectable in quantifiable amounts. The most common elements present were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, boron, and sulfur. Critical elements such as lithium and chromium were also found in the leachate. Future research will develop an integrated method applying microbial bioleaching, physico-chemical processes, and membrane filtration to recover critical elements from landfill leachate
