Stability analysis of Famagusta Churches: St. George of the Latins
This thesis addresses the study of the stability of Saint George of the Latins church, which is located
in Famagusta (Cyprus), under self-weight and seismic loading. In the first part of the work, the state of
the art is presented, including brief review on Famagusta history, its seismicity and the inspection and
diagnosis works carried out on the church. The limit analysis of collapse mechanisms, both force
based and displacement based, was used for a first safety assessment. After that, a numerical model
was prepared using finite elements and it was updated using the dynamic identification results. The
updated model was subjected to non-linear static (pushover) analysis in different directions (global
and principal) using two lateral load patterns: proportional to the mass and proportional to the mode
shape of the structure in the applicable direction. The results of the pushover analyses were compared
with the limit analysis results. As final step, non-linear dynamic analyses with time integration were
carried out and the dynamic behavior of the structure was compared with the results of limit analysis
and pushover analysis
A quantum annealing protocol to solve the maximum clique problem
Treballs Finals de Grau de Física, Facultat de Física, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2022, Tutor: Bruno Juliá DíazWe give a short introduction to quantum annealing in the transverse Ising model and formulate the maximum clique problem in this setting. We then brie y show how problems are actually implemented in D-Wave's annealers through the idea of minor-embeddings and chains. We also provide simulations for a small problem and actual results on D-Wave's annealers for larger instances as well as the dependence of the success rate on different parameters
Exotic smooths structures on spheres
Treballs Finals de Grau de Matemàtiques, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2022, Director: Ricardo García López[en] The main goal of this work is to prove the existence of exotic smooth spheres. These are smooth manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard sphere. This was first shown in the 7-dimensional case by John Milnor in his influential paper [Mil56], and this work replicates his construction.
In order to state and prove this result, though, a journey through some background is needed. This includes singular homology and cohomology theory, Morse theory and characteristic classes. Hence, we also slightly develop these topics here
OTOC, complexity and entropy in bi-partite systems
There is a remarkable interest in the study of Out-of-time ordered
correlators (OTOCs) that goes from many body theory and high energy physics to
quantum chaos. In this latter case there is a special focus on the comparison
with the traditional measures of quantum complexity such as the spectral
statistics, for example. The exponential growth has been verified for many
paradigmatic maps and systems. But less is known for multi-partite cases. On
the other hand the recently introduced Wigner separability entropy (WSE) and
its classical counterpart (CSE) provide with a complexity measure that treats
equally quantum and classical distributions in phase space. We have compared
the behavior of these measures in a system consisting of two coupled and
perturbed cat maps with different dynamics: double hyperbolic (HH), double
elliptic (EE) and mixed (HE). In all cases, we have found that the OTOCs and
the WSE have essentially the same behavior, providing with a complete
characterization in generic bi-partite systems and at the same time revealing
them as very good measures of quantum complexity for phase space distributions.
Moreover, we establish a relation between both quantities by means of a
recently proven theorem linking the second Renyi entropy and OTOCs.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Quantum and classical complexity in coupled maps
We study a generic and paradigmatic two-degrees-of-freedom system consisting of two coupled perturbed cat maps with different types of dynamics. The Wigner separability entropy (WSE)—equivalent to the operator space entanglement entropy—and the classical separability entropy (CSE) are used as measures of complexity. For the case where both degrees of freedom are hyperbolic, the maps are classically ergodic and the WSE and the CSE behave similarly, growing to higher values than in the doubly elliptic case. However, when one map is elliptic and the other hyperbolic, the WSE reaches the same asymptotic value than that of the doubly hyperbolic case but at a much slower rate. The CSE only follows the WSE for a few map steps, revealing that classical dynamical features are not enough to explain complexity growth.Fil: Bergamasco, Pablo D.. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Classical to quantum correspondence in dissipative directed transport
We compare the quantum and classical properties of the (Quantum) Isoperiodic
Stable Structures -- (Q)ISSs -- which organize the parameter space of a
paradigmatic dissipative ratchet model, i.e. the dissipative modified kicked
rotator. We study the spectral behavior of the corresponding classical
Perron-Frobenius operators with thermal noise and the quantum superoperators
without it for small values. We find a remarkable similarity
between the classical and quantum spectra. This finding significantly extends
previous results -- obtained for the mean currents and asymptotic distributions
only -- and on the other hand unveils a classical to quantum correspondence
mechanism where the classical noise is qualitatively different from the quantum
one. This is crucial not only for simple attractors but also for chaotic ones,
where just analyzing the asymptotic distribution reveals insufficient.
Moreover, we provide with a detailed characterization of relevant eigenvectors
by means of the corresponding Weyl-Wigner distributions, in order to better
identify similarities and differences. Finally, this model being generic, it
allows us to conjecture that this classical to quantum correspondence mechanism
is a universal feature of dissipative systems.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
The inequitative treatment in the crime peculated by appropriation in the military and police criminal code
At present, the recurrence to commit the crime of embezzlement by appropriation, under which charges and investigations have been charged to members of this institution, but what strikes the most is how There is no clarity in normative material, but, on the contrary, there are legal loopholes, that prevent the condemnation against this type of crime. Thus, the contradictions and inaccuracies between Law 1765 of 2015 and the Military Penal Code, where the latter appears to be inclined to reduce crime and reduce legal procedures to condemn this procedure, which affects the image and credibility of a State entity
