Introduction: Revisiting the Roles and Responsibilities of Trade Associations
We explain that the reasons for this Dialog stem from the enduring gaps in our understanding of what trade associations are, how they work, and what impact they have on members, industries, markets, and societies. The Dialog includes an opening paper by Thomas Lawton, Tazeeb Rajwani and Amy Minto and is followed by contributions from Michael Barnett, Steven Kahl, Lyn Spillman, and Howard Aldrich. Building on previous and ongoing research, each author reflected on the key questions driving this Dialogue: Do trade associations matter and if so, how? We argue that not only do they matter but more attention needs to be given to their roles and responsibilities

Particle code simulations with injected particles
As problems we are interested in become more complex, we often find our simulations stretching the limits of available computer resources. For example, an interesting problem is simulation of dissipation processes in sub-critical collisionless shocks. To simulate this system our simulation box must contain the shock and its upstream and downstream regions over the entire length of a run. If the shock moves with any appreciable speed the box must then be considerably larger than the shock thickness making it hard to resolve the shock front itself with a reasonable number of grid points. A solution to this problem is to run the simulation in the frame of reference of the shock. Particles are injected upstream of the shock and leave the simulation box downstream. With the shock stationary in the simulation box, we only need to contain enough of the up and downstream regions for the fields, etc., to settle down and separate the shock from the box boundaries. In this tutorial we consider some basic algorithms used in a practical particle injection code, such as the two dimensional WAVE code used at Los Alamos. We will try to present these ideas in a simple format general enough to be easily included in any particle code. Topics covered are: smoothly injecting particles, generating the distribution functions, time dependent injection density, and boundary conditions on fields and particles
New forms of mobilization, new people mobilized? Evidence from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems
Mobilization efforts by parties and candidates during election campaigns tend to reach
those who are more likely to vote in the first place. This is thought to be particularly
consequential for turnout among the young. Harder and less cost-effective to reach, young
adults are less mobilized and vote less often, creating a vicious circle of demobilization.
However, new forms of political communication — including online and text messaging —
have created expectations this circle might be broken. Is this happening? We examine data
from Module 4 of the CSES surveys, looking at the prevalence of different types of party
contacts in 38 countries, the profile of voters who are reached, and the effects of these
efforts on turnout. New forms of party contacting do matter for turnout and partially reduce
the age gap in contacting, but still fail to compensate for the much larger differentials that

Multi-touch Interaction Data Analysis System (MIDAS) for 2-D tactile display research
The study of haptic perception and cognition requires data about how humans interact with tactile surfaces in the context of performing cognitive tasks. MIDAS is a set of three tools for the digital capture, coding, analysis, and interpretation of timeseries, multitouch, interactive behaviors on a tactile surface. The MIDAS-logger uses the current screen technology of tablet computers to capture touches (up to ten fingers at high spatial and temporal resolution) through conventional tactile graphics that are overlaid on the screen. The MIDAS-analyser is a software program for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of MIDASlogger touch data, which includes a fully interactive visualization of the data and a yoked display of a conventional simultaneous video recording made of the interactions. MIDAS-tactile protocol analysis (TPA) provides a scheme and a method to enable the rich coding and interpretation of tactile behaviors over multiple spatial and temporal scales. The efficacy of MIDAS was assessed against a set of criteria drawn from the successes and limitations of prior approaches to the study of tactile interactions. To demonstrate the functions of MIDAS, its three components were used to capture, analyze, code, and interpret the behavior of an experienced user and an inexperienced user of tactile graphics as they performed a shape-matching task
Evaluation of Skylab (EREP) data for forest and rangeland surveys
The author has identified the following significant results. Four widely separated sites (near Augusta, Georgia; Lead, South Dakota; Manitou, Colorado; and Redding, California) were selected as typical sites for forest inventory, forest stress, rangeland inventory, and atmospheric and solar measurements, respectively. Results indicated that Skylab S190B color photography is good for classification of Level 1 forest and nonforest land (90 to 95 percent correct) and could be used as a data base for sampling by small and medium scale photography using regression techniques. The accuracy of Level 2 forest and nonforest classes, however, varied from fair to poor. Results of plant community classification tests indicate that both visual and microdensitometric techniques can separate deciduous, conifirous, and grassland classes to the region level in the Ecoclass hierarchical classification system. There was no consistency in classifying tree categories at the series level by visual photointerpretation. The relationship between ground measurements and large scale photo measurements of foliar cover had a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.75. Barriers to development and progression of women entrepreneurs in Pakistan
This article would help integration of women entrepreneurs into the mainstream economy in Pakistan.In Pakistan, women entrepreneurs do not enjoy the same opportunities as men due to a number of deep-rooted discriminatory socio-cultural values and traditions. Furthermore, these restrictions can be observed within the support mechanisms that exist to assist such fledgling businesswomen. The economic potential of female entrepreneurs is not being realised as they suffer from a lack of access to capital, land, business premises, information technology, training and agency assistance. Inherent attitudes of a patriarchal society, that men are superior to women and that women are best suited to be homemakers, create formidable challenges. Women also receive little encouragement from some male family members, resulting in limited spatial mobility and a dearth of social capital. The research suggests that in order to foster development, multi-agency cooperation is required. The media, educational policy makers and government agencies could combine to provide women with improved access to business development services and facilitate local, regional and national networks
The effective mass of two--dimensional 3He
We use structural information from diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for
two--dimensional 3He to calculate the effective mass. Static effective
interactions are constructed from the density-- and spin structure functions
using sumrules. We find that both spin-- and density-- fluctuations contribute
about equally to the effective mass. Our results show, in agreement with recent
experiments, a flattening of the single--particle self--energy with increasing
density, which eventually leads to a divergent effective mass.Comment: 4 pages, accepted in PR
