Expanding the 2, 2’-bipyrimidine bridged 1D homonuclear coordination polymers family: [MIIbpymCl2] (M=Fe, Co) magnetic and structural characterization
One pot reaction of hydrated chloride salts of Fe(II) and Co(II) with stoichiometric amounts of 2,2’-bipyrimidine (bpym) in a methanol–acetonitrile mixture afforded the corresponding 1D homonuclear coordination polymers, [μ-(bpym)MCl2]n. Crystal structures of both complexes are isomorphous in the highly symmetric orthorhombic space group Fddd. The 1D coordination polymers are composed of almost orthogonal alternating bipyrimidine bridges linking the {MCl2} units. The magnetic behaviour of the Fe(II) compound can be well understood as a uniform S = 2 chain with an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between metal ion sites. In the case of the Co(II) ion, also an antiferromagnetic interaction is operative along the uniform chain, while at low temperatures a long range-ordering is observed due to spin canting originating from the anisotropic behaviour of the Co(II) lowest energy Kramers doublets.Fil: Alborés, Pablo. Single Particle Models for the Numerical Simulation of Lithium-Ion Cells
In the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) for a lithium-ion cell, it is crucial to accurately simulate the device in real time using mathematical models. Often, Equivalent Circuit Models (ECM) are used to this end, due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, they are purely phenomenological (their parameters are fitted to emulate empirical data) and their internal variables lack physical meaning. On the other hand, the most popular physics-based electrochemical model in the literature, the pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model, presents a high computational cost. In this paper, we review the single particle model (SPM), a physics-based model of reduced complexity that is suitable for real-time applications.Under the academic supervision of Dr. Jerónimo RodrÃguez GarcÃa, this work was carried out as a Master’s thesis for the Máster en matemática industrial program, offered by Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (www.m2i.es). Reproductive Strategies Under Different Environmental Conditions: Total Output vs Investment per Egg in the Slipper Lobster Scyllarus Arctus
Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] The slipper lobster Scyllarus arctus is an important fishery resource in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula), with a large reduction of its populations in recent decades in the North-east Atlantic and Mediterranean, but only limited information on its reproduction. This study provides an analysis of the reproductive potential of this scyllarid during two breeding cycles (2008 and 2009) in the NE Atlantic (43°20′N 8°50′W). We studied several reproductive traits (fecundity, brood weight, egg weight and volume) in broods with eggs both in an early and late embryonic stage, in relation to female size and temporal variations. Total output (fecundity and weight) and egg weight were closely linked to maternal size, and this relationship remained in broods with late-stage eggs. In relation to temporal variations, our data revealed an important seasonal variability in fecundity and egg weight, showing an inverse pattern in the reproductive strategy in the first two seasons of the reproductive period, with a maximum egg weight in winter (December–February) and a maximum number of eggs produced in spring (April–May). A predictive model for realized fecundity was developed: log (FE) = 0.064 + 2.907 log (length)−0.018 Month2 + 0.174 Month, which accounted for over 90% of variation in the total data.Xunta de Galicia; 07MMA009103PRThis study is part of the project ‘Study of the reproductive biology and larval development of the small European locust lobster Scyllarus arctus: basic knowledge for a Sustainable Fishery Management’ (07MMA009103PR) co-funded by the Xunta de Galicia and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF
Biogenic silver nanoparticles: Understanding the antimicrobial mechanism using Confocal Raman Microscopy
The antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have made them ubiquitous in a number of real-world industrial applications; however, the antimicrobial mode of action of biogenic AgNPs is not entirely understood. The use of Raman spectroscopy can provide molecular fingerprint information on various chemical and biochemical components in complex systems like microbial cultures, without the need for any complex sample pre-treatment. Consequently, the antimicrobial mechanism of AgNPs can be inferred through morphological and compositional changes of microbial cells that are monitored via changes in Raman band profiles. Here we show the synthesis of biogenic AgNPs using the extracellular cell-free filtrates of Penicillium expansum. The antimicrobial activity of the Penicillium expansum synthesized silver nanoparticles (hereafter PeNPs) was evaluated and the interactions between the nanoparticles and Escherichia coli were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), showing the attachment of PeNPs to the surface of the bacteria and rupture of the bacterial cell membrane. Importantly, we show how Confocal Raman Microscopy can be used as an innovative approach to study the antimicrobial mechanisms, the results of which confirm that the PeNPs induce damage to bacterial and fungal cells, resulting in critical changes to polysaccharides, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids

Over the last decades it has been noted an important decline in the populations
of the slipper lobster Scyllarus arctus throughout its distributional range.
Despite its high commercial value and the management measures that are being
implemented, the knowledge on basic biology of this species is scarce.
The main aim of this thesis is to increase the actual knowledge on the reproductive
biology of S. arctus in order to provide new information on those aspects
that have not been studied before. Knowledge on the reproductive cycle, size at
maturity and reproductive potential of the species, and those factors that can determine
their variability, is extremely important from an ecological point of view
but also in order to implement sustainable management measures and to evaluate
the state of its populations.
In order to do that, a population of S. arctus on the Galician coast (NE Atlantic)
has been studied during 2008 and 2009. The novelty of this work relies on
the study of the reproductive biology by the biochemical characterisation of the
broods and the individual physiological condition, being both aspects critical since
they are related to the availability and use of energy and structural resources
for reproduction
Coastal path of access to Castro de Baroña and beach of Arealonga
The main objective of this project is to present, analyze, implement and compare
CooleyTukey's algorithm in order to calculate the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), known
in Spanish as Transformada Rápida de Fourier. This is calculated in chapters 5 and 6,
while the other four chapters are dedicated to promote and justify the need of Fast Fourier
Transform as the algorithm to calculate the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) (in Spanish:
Transformada de Fourier Discreta) that is presented in four different points of view.
In the first chapter DFT is introduced as a discrete approximation of Continuous Fourier
Transform with the use of quadrature formulas to approximate the integral that defines it.
In the Chapter 2 we propose the approximation of a function in the way of leastsquares
with grade m Fourier's trigonometric polynomial. When m tends to 1 we obtain
the known Fourier's series of the function. Fourier's series is a potent tool to approximate
functions. We will show how it relates to the Discrete Fourier Transform with the effective
calculation of the coeficients of the referred series by using quadrature formulas that define
the approximated calculation of the integrals.
Trigonometric interpolation is the main object of study in Chapter 3, in which we
will present the interpolation of trigonometric polynomial and phase polynomial. For both
cases we will prove how the coeficients' calculation of the polynomial is strongly related
to the Discrete Fourier Transformation.
In the Chapter 4 we introduce the DFT by the effective calculation of the coeficients
of the trigonometrical polynomial fit in the way of discrete least-squares.
In the Chapter 5 we reach the main part of the project, where the effective method
for the calculation of the Discrete Transform is exposed: the Fast Fourier Transform and,
in particular, the Cooley-Tukey's algorithm.
In the end, we use the last chapter as a recompilation of different examples of the
situations exposed in the project using the developed algorithm and showing its benefits
in opposition to the direct calculation of the Discrete Fourier Transform.
The project concludes with an annex where the programmed Matlab codes of the
algorithm are collected
