The Effect of Distinct Geometric Semantic Crossover Operators in Regression Problems

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the impact of geometric semantic crossover operators in a wide range of symbolic regression problems. First, it analyses the impact of using Manhattan and Euclidean distance geometric semantic crossovers in the learning process. Then, it proposes two strategies to numerically optimize the crossover mask based on mathematical properties of these operators, instead of simply generating them randomly. An experimental analysis comparing geometric semantic crossovers using Euclidean and Manhattan distances and the proposed strategies is performed in a test bed of twenty datasets. The results show that the use of different distance functions in the semantic geometric crossover has little impact on the test error, and that our optimized crossover masks yield slightly better results. For SGP practitioners, we suggest the use of the semantic crossover based on the Euclidean distance, as it achieved similar results to those obtained by more complex operators

Indigenous Blockades and the Power to Speak the Law: From Settler Colonialism to Indigenous Resurgence

    Get PDF
This thesis traces tensions between pluralism, elimination and resistance in the centuries-old narrative underlying the uncertain legal foundations of Crown sovereignty in the territory now known as Canada. The first half of the work applies the emerging literature of settler colonialism to a close reading of a selection of leading scholarship on Aboriginal rights jurisprudence to identify whether the Canadian courts are reproducing elements of settler colonialism in their decisions. The second half of this work draws on the literature of Indigenous resurgence, blockades, jurisdiction and the rule of law to construct a framework for examining juridical sites where conflicting assertions of Indigenous and settler colonial authority are a dispositive issue. This framework is used to analyze a selection of leading Indigenous blockades cases as a way of further understanding the challenges that courts and Indigenous peoples face in seeking to decolonize law and restore a pluralistic legal order

Enhancement of Epidemiological Models for Dengue Fever Based on Twitter Data

Epidemiological early warning systems for dengue fever rely on up-to-date epidemiological data to forecast future incidence. However, epidemiological data typically requires time to be available, due to the application of time-consuming laboratorial tests. This implies that epidemiological models need to issue predictions with larger antecedence, making their task even more difficult. On the other hand, online platforms, such as Twitter or Google, allow us to obtain samples of users' interaction in near real-time and can be used as sensors to monitor current incidence. In this work, we propose a framework to exploit online data sources to mitigate the lack of up-to-date epidemiological data by obtaining estimates of current incidence, which are then explored by traditional epidemiological models. We show that the proposed framework obtains more accurate predictions than alternative approaches, with statistically better results for delays greater or equal to 4 weeks.Comment: ACM Digital Health 201

O território nas políticas culturais para as cidades

    Get PDF
The conception of territory in cultural policies for the cities ABSTRACT: In the constitution of territories interact factors of political order - powers acting on the space – and also from cultural order - values and meanings in which the space is invested by social agents. The paper aims to present the notion of territory, focusing on its cultural aspect, in order to incorporate its notion not only to studies, but also and mainly to the practice of cultural policy development by the state. It presents the three main models of democratic cultural policies, emphasizing the relationship that each model settles with territorial aspect. KEYWORDS: Territory. Cultural policy. Cultural space

Dynamics of bound states of dihydrogen at Cu(I) and Cu(II) species coordinated near one and two zeolite framework aluminium atoms: A combined sorption, INS, IR and DFT study

Abstract Ambient conditions sorption isotherms of dihydrogen in a series of various levels of Cu-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites, with two different Si/Al ratios, namely 11.5 and 25, show the presence of different amount of Cu centres able to strongly bind H2. Although the isosteric heats of adsorption derived from these isotherms are rather similar, of the order of 30 kJ/mol H2, Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) of adsorbed dihydrogen and Fourier-Transformed Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements of adsorbed CO and NO reveal that copper is encountered in two oxidation states. At least two types of Cu(I) ions are clearly detected as well as some heterogeneity of the Cu(II) species. The number of these Cu species is different in the two investigated ZSM-5 materials and depends on the Cu exchange level. With the aid of DFT model cluster calculations we find that under different coordination environments, determined by the Al distribution, both mono- and divalent Cu ions could bind H2 with a different strength. Unprecedentedly, we found that Cu-ions compensating two Al atoms, i.e. formally Cu(II) species, relatively far apart from each other, may behave very similarly to the monovalent Cu-species or alternatively viewed – as Cu(I) species that compensate for two framework Al-atoms. Such Cu-species also form stable η2 dihydrogen complexes
