Intersection of Indigenous Peoples and Police: Questions about Contact and Confidence

Get PDF
Despite much anecdotal, journalistic, and statistical evidence of their oppression by colonial and neocolonial police practices, little is known about Indigenous peoples’ attitudes towards the police in Canada. Th e theory that involuntary police–citizen contacts increase citizens’ mistrust, fear, and dissat- isfaction and, ultimately, decreases confi dence in the police was advanced. Hypotheses arising from this historical-theoretical context were tested with the 2014 panel of Canada’s General Social Survey, including 951 Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) and 21,576 non-Indigenous white participants. Indigenous identity and involuntary contacts were both signifi cantly associated with a lack of confi dence in police, p \u3c .001. As hypothesized, the odds associated with involuntary contacts (odds ratio [OR] = 2.66) were stronger than those associated with being Indigenous (OR = 1.81). While the hypothesized ethnicity by contact interaction was not observed, Indigenous participants (5%) were two and a half times as likely as non-Indigenous white participants (2%) to have had relatively frequent (two or more) involuntary contacts with the police during the past year. Th erefore, at the population level Indigenous people are at much greater risk of coming into involuntary contact with the police and of consequently lacking confi dence in police. Policy implications and future research needs are discussed

Experimental benchmarking of Monte Carlo simulations for radiotherapy dosimetry using monochromatic X-ray beams in the presence of metal-based compounds

The local dose deposition obtained in X-ray radiotherapy can be increased by the presence of metal-based compounds in the irradiated tissues. This finding is strongly enhanced if the radiation energy is chosen in the kiloelectronvolt energy range, due to the proximity to the absorption edge. In this study, we present a MC application developed with the toolkit Geant4 to investigate the dosimetric distribution of a uniform monochromatic X-ray beam, and benchmark it against experimental measurements. Two validation studies were performed, using a commercial PTW RW3 water-equivalent slab phantom for radiotherapy, and a custom-made PMMA phantom conceived to assess the influence of high atomic number compounds on the dose profile, such as iodine and gadolinium at different concentrations. An agreement within 9% among simulations and experimental data was found for the monochromatic energies considered, which were in the range of 30–140 keV; the agreement was better than 5% for depths <60 mm. A dose enhancement was observed in the calculations, corresponding to the regions containing the contrast agents. Dose enhancement factors (DEFs) were calculated, and the highest values were found for energies higher than the corresponding K-edges of iodine and gadolinium. The in-silico results are in line with the empirical findings, which suggest that Geant4 can be satisfactorily used as a tool for the calculation of the percentage depth dose (PDD) at the energies considered in this study in the presence of contrast agents

Macroscopic analysis of joints from arthritic swines pigs in the abattoir Abstract A macroscopic study of thoracic and pelvic limb articulations as well as regional lymph nodes was performed in recently-slaughtered swines at a slaughterhouse located in Concordia, SC, Brasil. A total of 23,393 carcasses were included in the study, 140 (0.5%) being diverted on the discharge line by the Department of Final Inspection as suspicious for arthritis. The analysis of the suspicious carcasses showed that 98 (70%) presented arthritis caused by ostechondrosis, 29 (21%) infectious arthritis, four (3%) infectious arthritis and ostechondrosis simultaneously, two (1%) traumatic arthritis, four (3%) presented arthritis with uncertain diagnosis and three (2%) showed normal articulations. The arthritis caused by the osteochondrosis was diagnosed by the increased volume of sinovial fluid and focal areas of folds, flaps and ulcers in the articular cartilage. The infectious arthritis was diagnosed by an inflammatory process involving regional limph nodes and by moderate to accentuated hypertrophy of the sinovial membrane. The percentage of arthritis caused by osteochondrosis was higher when compared to those found in previous studies. This fact emphasizes the need for a differential diagnosis between infectious arthritis and osteochondrosis in order to avoid the unnecessary condemnation of carcasses at slaughterhouses

Although laminitis has been reported in pigs, distal phalanx rotation detected by radiography has not been described yet in this species. Accordingly, this paper describes three cases of laminitis in sows from a Brazilian commercial swine unit, and a preliminary study on laminitis in culled sows from a slaughterhouse, based on radiographic evaluation. A farrow-to-finish unit located in a central swine production area in southern Brazil showed a history of locomotor alterations in sows. Three lame sows were selected for examination. They displayed typical clinical signs of laminitis. Their feet were radiographed, and all three showed distal phalanx deviation in at least one digit. In order to find out the possibility of laminitis occurrence in other farms, thirteen hind and five front feet from lame sows were collected in a slaughterhouse, and radiographed in lateromedial position. Eleven sows (61%) showed distal phalanx rotation of the third or the fourth digit, whereas eight of them (44%) showed this alteration in both digits. Osteolysis in five sows (28%) and periosteal proliferation in another four sows (11%) were observed. In conclusion, laminitis with distal phalanx rotation is present in Brazilian herds, and radiographic analysis may be an important diagnosis tool for the disease in vivo or at slaughterhouses.

Climate change, in the framework of the constructal law

Here we present a simple and transparent alternative to the complex models of Earth thermal behavior under time-changing conditions. We show the one-to-one relationship between changes in atmospheric properties and time-dependent changes in temperature and its distribution on Earth. The model accounts for convection and radiation, thermal inertia and changes in albedo (&rho;) and greenhouse factor (γ). The constructal law is used as the principle that governs the evolution of flow configuration in time, and provides closure for the equations that describe the model. In the first part of the paper, the predictions are tested against the current thermal state of Earth. Next, the model showed that for two time-dependent scenarios, (&delta;&rho; = 0.002; &delta;&gamma; = 0.011) and (&delta;&rho; = 0.002; &delta;&gamma; = 0.005) the predicted equatorial and polar temperature increases and the time scales are (&Delta;<i>T</i>H = 1.16 K; &Delta;<i>T</i>L = 1.11 K; 104 years) and (0.41 K; 0.41 K; 57 years), respectively. In the second part, a continuous model of temperature variation was used to predict the thermal response of the Earth's surface for changes bounded by &delta;&rho; = &delta;&gamma; and &delta;&rho; = &minus;&delta;&gamma;. The results show that the global warming amplitudes and time scales are consistent with those obtained for &delta;&rho; = 0.002 and &delta;&gamma; = 0.005. The poleward heat current reaches its maximum in the vicinity of 35° latitude, accounting for the position of the Ferrel cell between the Hadley and Polar Cells
