Singular kernels, multiscale decomposition of microstructure, and dislocation models
We consider a model for dislocations in crystals introduced by Koslowski,
Cuiti\~no and Ortiz, which includes elastic interactions via a singular kernel
behaving as the norm of the slip. We obtain a sharp-interface limit
of the model within the framework of -convergence. From an analytical
point of view, our functional is a vector-valued generalization of the one
studied by Alberti, Bouchitt\'e and Seppecher to which their rearrangement
argument no longer applies. Instead we show that the microstructure must be
approximately one-dimensional on most length scales and exploit this property
to derive a sharp lower bound
On the Lp-differentiability of certain classes of functions

From this result we derive the Lp-differentiability for vector fields on R d whose curl and divergence are measures, and also for vector fields with bounded deformation
NICU Infants & SNHL: Experience of a western Sicily tertiary care centre
Introduction: The variability of symptoms and signs caused by central nervous system (CNS) lesions make multiple sclerosis difficult to recognize,Introduction: This study adds the evaluation of the independent etiologic factors that may play a role in the development of SNHL in a NICU population. We compared neonatal intensive care unit NICU infants with sensorineural hearing loss SNHL to age and gender matched normal hearing NICU controls. Materials and methods: 284 consecutive NICU infants positive to the presence of risk indicators associated with permanent congenital, delayed-onset, or progressive hearing loss underwent to global audiological assessment. The following risk factors were researched, making a distinction between prenatal and perinatal risk factors: in the first group, family history of permanent childhood hearing impairment, consanguinity, pregnant maternal infection and drugs exposition during pregnancy; in the second group, premature birth, respiratory distress, hyperbilirubinemia requiring exchange tranfusion, very low birth weight, cranio-facial abnormality, perinatal infections, ototoxic drugs administration, acidosis, hyponatremia, head trauma. Results: The analysis of the auditory deficit for infants according to numbers of risk factors showed mean values of: 78 + 28.08 dB nHL for infants positive to two risk factors; 75.71 + 30.30 dB nHL in cases positive to three risk factors; 96.66 + 34.46 dB nHL for four risk factors and 85 + 35 dB nHL in case of >5 risk factors. Conclusion: NICU infants have greater chances of developing SNHL, because of the presence of multiple risk factors; in fact, as the number of coexisting risk factors increases, the prevalence rate of SNHL also increases (r=0.81)
Evaluation of the TOPSAR performance by using passive and active calibrators
The preliminary analysis of the C-band cross-track interferometric data (XTI) acquired during the MAC Europe 1991 campaign over the Matera test site, in Southern Italy is presented. Twenty three passive calibrators (Corner Reflector, CR) and 3 active calibrators (Active Radar Calibrator, ARC) were deployed over an area characterized by homogeneous background. Contemporaneously to the flight, a ground truth data collection campaign was carried out. The research activity was focused on the development of motion compensation algorithms, in order to improve the height measurement accuracy of the TOPSAR system
Recent Progress in Shearlet Theory: Systematic Construction of Shearlet Dilation Groups, Characterization of Wavefront Sets, and New Embeddings
The class of generalized shearlet dilation groups has recently been developed
to allow the unified treatment of various shearlet groups and associated
shearlet transforms that had previously been studied on a case-by-case basis.
We consider several aspects of these groups: First, their systematic
construction from associative algebras, secondly, their suitability for the
characterization of wavefront sets, and finally, the question of constructing
embeddings into the symplectic group in a way that intertwines the
quasi-regular representation with the metaplectic one. For all questions, it is
possible to treat the full class of generalized shearlet groups in a
comprehensive and unified way, thus generalizing known results to an infinity
of new cases. Our presentation emphasizes the interplay between the algebraic
structure underlying the construction of the shearlet dilation groups, the
geometric properties of the dual action, and the analytic properties of the

Enhancement of the Roman Bridge of Canosa in the Ofanto Valley Rural Landscape
The ancient Roman Bridge, 2,000 years old, is located on the old Via Traiana route, three kilometers far from the town of Canosa (Apulia Region), and for many centuries it was the connection between northern and southern part of the Apulia Region along the Adriatic coast. It has an imposing structure stonework, with a donkey back shape, built with five round arches supported by piers sustained by rostrums. During the Second World War, a concrete access way was realized in order to let the British and American army tank pass through the bridge. The “Municipal Plan of the Tratturi” qualifies the area as “sheep trails or path” that preserves the original consistency or that can be at the same renovated. Aim of the research is the requalification of the study area through analyses, plan and restructuring the ancient routes. In this study, the current status of the area is analyzed in detail and the inconsistency of the interventions is highlighted. The project proposal provides for new tourism paths equipped with cycle/pedestrian tracks and small resting and refreshment areas, intermodal exchange car parks and management structures, allowing the creation of a green tourist-cultural route
Analysis of the 5'UTR of HCV genotype 3 grown in vitro in human B cells, T cells, and macrophages
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previously, we have reported the isolation and molecular characterization of human Hepatitis C virus genotype 1 (HCV-1) from infected patients. We are now reporting an analysis of HCV obtained from patients infected with HCV genotype 3 (HCV-3) as diagnosed by clinical laboratories.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HCV was cultured <it>in vitro </it>using our system. HCV RNA was isolated from patients' blood and from HCV cultured in various cell types for up to three months. The 5'UTR of these isolates were used for comparisons. Results revealed a number of sequence changes as compared to the serum RNA. The HCV RNA produced efficiently by infected macrophages, B-cells, and T-cells had sequences similar to HCV-1, which suggests that selection of the variants was performed at the level of macrophages. Virus with sequences similar to HCV-1 replicated better in macrophages than HCV having a 5'UTR similar to HCV-3.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although HCV-3 replicates in cell types such as B-cells, T-cells, and macrophages, it may require a different primary cell type for the same purpose. Therefore, in our opinion, HCV-3 does not replicate efficiently in macrophages, and patients infected with HCV-3 may contain a population of HCV-1 in their blood.</p
