    The Nuremberg Music-Ecological Approach: Why are some musicians internationally successful and others not?

    Success in music depends on a number of crucial factors with musical talent figuring prominently in gifted research. However, in the Nuremberg Music-Ecological Approach presented in this paper a different view is taken. Instead of talents and factors, the concept of available resources in an individual´s actiotope (Ziegler, 2005) is put in the center of our analysis. Educational Capital refers to exogenous resources and comprises five different forms of resources: Economic Educational Capital, Cultural Educational Capital, Social Educational Capital, Infrastructural Educational Capital and Didactic Educational Capital. Learning Capital refers to endogenous resources and also comprises five different forms of resources: Organismic Learning Capital, Actional Learning Capital, Telic Learning Capital, Episodic Learning Capital and Attentional Learning Capital. Results of an empirical study are reported which was designed to test the claim that successful professional musicians possess more Educational Capital as well as more Learning Capital than their less suc-cessful colleagues. The hypothesis was confirmed with a sample of professional musicians who were successful on a local, regional or international level

    Nutrition Campaign Knowledge and Dietary Behavior in Middle School Students

    Background and Purpose: Federal nutrition campaigns are designed to make dietary recommendations accessible but have not been extensively evaluated. This paper explores whether knowledge of nutrition campaigns is associated with dietary behavior among young adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 4,773 middle school students in Southern California. Hierarchical logistic regression models were used to assess the association between dietary behaviors and nutrition campaign knowledge, controlling for gender and ethnicity. Results: Knowledge of the Fruit & VeggiesMore Matters campaign was associated with increased odds of high fruit and vegetable consumption, knowledge of the MyPlate campaign was associated with neither, and both were associated with increased odds of not consuming soda. Conclusion: Overall, low percentages of students demonstrated knowledge of nutrition campaigns, and knowledge was associated with some dietary behaviors. More research is needed to examine the impact of nutrition campaigns while also accounting for other psychosocial and environmental factors that may affect soda, fruit, and vegetable consumption

    International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) ultraviolet spectral atlas of selected astronomical objects

    The IUE Ultraviolet Spectral Atlas of Selected Astronomical Objects (or 'the Atlas'), is based on the data that were available in the IUE archive in 1986, and is intended to be a quick reference for the ultraviolet spectra of many categories of astronomical objects. It shows reflected sunlight from the Moon, planets, and asteroids, and also shows emission from comets. Comprehensive compilations of UV spectra for main sequence, subgiant, giant, bright giant, and supergiant stars are published elsewhere. This Atlas contains the spectra for objects occupying other areas of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: pre-main sequence stars, chemically peculiar stars, pulsating variables, subluminous stars, and Wolf-Rayet stars. This Atlas also presents phenomena such as the chromospheric and transition region emissions from late-type stars; composite spectra of stars, gas streams, accretion disks and gas envelopes of binary systems; the behavior of gas ejecta shortly after the outburst of novac and supernovac; and the H II regions, planetary nebulae, and supernova remnants. Population 2 stars, globular clusters, and luminous stars in the Magellanic Clouds, M31, and M33, are also included in this publication. Finally, the Atlas gives the ultraviolet spectra of galaxies of different Hubble types and of active galaxies

    STING-dependent interferon signatures restrict osteoclast differentiation and bone loss in mice

    Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) is a key mediator of type-I interferon (IFN-I) signaling in response to a variety of stimuli, but the contribution of STING to homeostatic processes is not fully characterized. Previous studies showed that ligand activation of STING limits osteoclast differentiation in vitro through the induction of IFNβ and IFN-I interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). In a disease model (SAVI) driven by the V154M gain-of-function mutation in STING, fewer osteoclasts form from SAVI precursors in response to receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) in an IFN-I-dependent manner. Due to the described role of STING-mediated regulation of osteoclastogenesis in activation settings, we sought to determine whether basal STING signaling contributes to bone homeostasis, an unexplored area. Using whole-body and myeloid-specific deficiency, we show that STING signaling prevents trabecular bone loss in mice over time and that myeloid-restricted STING activity is sufficient for this effect. STING-deficient osteoclast precursors differentiate with greater efficiency than wild types. RNA sequencing of wild-type and STING-deficient osteoclast precursor cells and differentiating osteoclasts reveals unique clusters of ISGs including a previously undescribed ISG set expressed in RANKL naïve precursors (tonic expression) and down-regulated during differentiation. We identify a 50 gene tonic ISG signature that is STING dependent and shapes osteoclast differentiation. From this list, we identify interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) as a tonic STING-regulated ISG that limits osteoclast formation. Thus, STING is an important upstream regulator of tonic IFN-I signatures shaping the commitment to osteoclast fates, providing evidence for a nuanced and unique role for this pathway in bone homeostasis

    Mitochondrial permeabilization engages NF-κB-dependent anti-tumour activity under caspase deficiency

    Apoptosis represents a key anti-cancer therapeutic effector mechanism. During apoptosis, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) typically kills cells even in the absence of caspase activity. Caspase activity can also have a variety of unwanted consequences that include DNA damage. We therefore investigated whether MOMP-induced caspase-independent cell death (CICD) might be a better way to kill cancer cells. We find that cells undergoing CICD display potent pro-inflammatory effects relative to apoptosis. Underlying this, MOMP was found to stimulate NF-κB activity through the downregulation of inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Strikingly, engagement of CICD displays potent anti-tumorigenic effects, often promoting complete tumour regression in a manner dependent on intact immunity. Our data demonstrate that by activating NF-κB, MOMP can exert additional signalling functions besides triggering cell death. Moreover, they support a rationale for engaging caspase-independent cell death in cell-killing anti-cancer therapies

    Basal metabolism of obese adolescents: Evidence for energy conservation compared to normal and lean adolescents

    To test if obese adolescents systematically conserve energy, comparisons of basal metabolic rate (BMR) of obese, normal, and lean male and female adolescents were made. Obese had eleevated values by as much as 23% ( P ≤ 0.05) expressed as kJ · 24 hr −1 compared to the normal and lean. When indexed to body mass (kJ · kg-BM −1 · hr −1 ), the BMR for the obese was depressed by as much as −53% ( P ≤ 0.01), and when indexed to fat free mass (kJ · kg-FFM −1 · hr −1 ) it was depressed by −33% compared to normal and lean adolescents. A “theoretical metabolic rate” (TMR), based on the observed fat free mass, fat mass, and their thermal equivalents, was proposed as a theoretical way to properly index basal metabolism, referenced to body composition. Comparisons of the TMR between the obese, normal, and lean revealed that the obese values were depressed by an average −22% ( P ≤ 0.05). In comparison, differences in TMR between the normal and lean males and females were no larger than 8% (ns). It was concluded that since both the observed BMR (expressed relative to body composition), and the derived TMR values were depressed for the obese compared to the normal and lean adolescent, the data suggest an energy saving hypothesis for obese adolescents.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38546/1/1310020510_ftp.pd

    The Relationship Between Central Auditory Tests and Neurocognitive Domains in Adults Living With HIV

    Objective: Tests requiring central auditory processing, such as speech perception-in-noise, are simple, time efficient, and correlate with cognitive processing. These tests may be useful for tracking brain function. Doing this effectively requires information on which tests correlate with overall cognitive function and specific cognitive domains. This study evaluated the relationship between selected central auditory focused tests and cognitive domains in a cohort of normal hearing adults living with HIV and HIV– controls. The long-term aim is determining the relationships between auditory processing and neurocognitive domains and applying this to analyzing cognitive function in HIV and other neurocognitive disorders longitudinally. Method: Subjects were recruited from an ongoing study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Central auditory measures included the Gap Detection Test (Gap), Hearing in Noise Test (HINT), and Triple Digit Test (TDT). Cognitive measures included variables from the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), Cogstate neurocognitive battery, and Kiswahili Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The measures represented three cognitive domains: processing speed, learning, and working memory. Bootstrap resampling was used to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the proportion of variance explained by the individual central auditory tests for each cognitive measure. The association of cognitive measures with central auditory variables taking HIV status and age into account was determined using regression models. Results: Hearing in Noise Tests and TDT were significantly associated with Cogstate learning and working memory tests. Gap was not significantly associated with any cognitive measure with age in the model. TDT explained the largest mean proportion of variance and had the strongest relationship to the MoCA and Cogstate tasks. With age in the model, HIV status did not affect the relationship between central auditory tests and cognitive measures. Age was strongly associated with multiple cognitive tests. Conclusion: Central auditory tests were associated with measures of learning and working memory. Compared to the other central auditory tests, TDT was most strongly related to cognitive function. These findings expand on the association between auditory processing and cognitive domains seen in other studies and support evaluating these tests for tracking brain health in HIV and other neurocognitive disorders

    Undifferentiated round cell sarcoma with BCOR internal tandem duplications (ITD) or YWHAE fusions:a clinicopathologic and molecular study

    Until recently, undifferentiated round cell sarcomas (URCS) in infants have been considered a wastebasket diagnosis, composed of various pathologic entities and lacking consistent genetic alterations. The recent identification of recurrent BCOR internal tandem duplications (ITD) and less common alternative YWHAE\u2013NUTM2B/E fusions in half of infantile URCS and the majority of so-called primitive myxoid mesenchymal tumors of infancy (PMMTI) suggests a common pathogenesis with clear cell sarcoma of the kidney which also harbors the same genetic alterations. These tumors also share a similar morphology and immunoprofile, including positivity for BCOR, cyclin D1, and SATB2. In this study, we investigate the largest cohort to date of genetically confirmed URCS and PMMTI with BCOR ITD or YWHAE fusions to better define their morphologic spectrum and clinical behavior. Twenty-eight cases harbored BCOR ITD and five YWHAE fusions, occurring in 29 infants and 4 children, 19 males and 14 females. Microscopically, 20 were classified as URCS and 13 as PMMTI. Follow-up was available in 25 patients, with 14 (56%) succumbing to their diseases at a mean duration of 18-months follow-up (range: 2\u201362). Six patients remained with no evidence of disease at a mean follow-up of 63 months (range: 4\u2013192), four patients were still alive with disease (mean follow-up: 46 months, range: 4\u2013120), and one died of other causes. Local recurrence and distant metastasis were each observed in 11/25 (44%) of the patients. The overall survival was 42% at 3 years and 34% at 5 years (median survival: 26 months). There was no statistically significant survival difference between cases diagnosed as URCS and PMMTI and between those with BCOR ITD and YWHAE fusions

    Livelihood support for caregivers of children with developmental disabilities: findings from a scoping review and stakeholder survey

    PURPOSE: Poverty amongst families with a child with disability adversely impacts child and family quality of life. We aimed to identify existing approaches to livelihood support for caregivers of children with developmental disabilities in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: This mixed-method study incorporated a scoping literature review and online stakeholder survey. We utilised the World Health Organization community-based rehabilitation (CBR) matrix as a guiding framework for knowledge synthesis and descriptively analysed the included articles and survey responses. RESULTS: We included 11 peer-reviewed publications, 6 grey literature articles, and 49 survey responses from stakeholders working in 22 countries. Identified programmes reported direct and indirect strategies for livelihood support targeting multiple elements of the CBR matrix; particularly skills development, access to social protection measures, and self-employment; frequently in collaboration with specialist partners, and as one component of a wider intervention. Self-help groups were also common. No publications examined effectiveness of livelihood support approaches in mitigating poverty, with most describing observational studies at small scale. CONCLUSION: Whilst stakeholders describe a variety of direct and indirect approaches to livelihood support for caregivers of children with disabilities, there is a lack of published literature on content, process, and impact to inform future programme development and delivery
