It provides a reflection on the disaggregation or diversification of this trade of extension and upon the evolution of the agricultural engineer profession, who has always sought in Argentina to organize on the model of learned professions (such as doctors, lawyers,...). Extension activity is at the heart of transformations occurring in the profession legitimating modes. After describing the context of the agricultural extension in Argentina, the first part presents the method used to produce data on the perceptions of the trade by extension workers themselves. The originality is here on an analysis which includes both public and private extension. A second part presents empirical data in the three workshops that has been organized in each of the three agricultural zones of South West Buenos Aires Province and intents to better understand issues at stake in rural and agricultural development in Argentina through the words of the extension workers. The conclusion transversely analyzes these materials for a global vision of the trade of extension and of the field of agricultural and rural development in Argentina. In particular transformations of legitimating modes of the profession of agricultural engineer are here analyzed as well as the importance of the relationship between the private and the public extension advice

Este capítulo es una invitación a pensar sobre ¿qué es la «profesión»? o también ¿qué significa ser un «profesional»? A cada uno/a de los egresados/as le significará algo particular, en función de su trayectoria o de su forma de haber interpretado la carrera y haberse proyectado/a en su próximo desempeño. Desarrollo territorial y competencias profesionales: una visión sobre el rol del ingeniero agrónomo desde el Laboratorio Agriterris

El enfoque territorial en el desarrollo rural y agropecuario ha tomado gran importancia en muchos países en los cuales se ha tomado conciencia del rol de la actividad agropecuaria más allá de su función meramente de suministro de commodities. Es el caso de Argentina desde los años 2000, así como de dos otros grandes países agropecuarios como Brasil y Francia. En este trabajo queremos presentar el programa de investigación de nuestro laboratorio tri-nacional que, en base a la comparaciones que realiza de la implementación del enfoque territorial, propone una reflexión sobre las competencias de los profesionales que acompañan los cambios en la actividad agropecuaria, y en particular del ingeniero agrónomo. Este texto está dividido en dos partes, en la primera hacemos una presentación general del Laboratorio AGRITERRIS, para luego volcarnos a la presentación de enfoques y resultados concretos de las investigaciones. Transformations of extension work in the Argentinean pampas and reconstruction of the profession of agricultural engineer

Cet article analyse les perceptions des conseillers agricoles de la région du sud-ouest de la province de Buenos Aires sur les transformations de leur métier et de leurs compétences. Il apporte une réflexion sur la diversification de l'exercice de ce métier, en rapport avec l'organisation de la profession d'ingénieur agronome qui a toujours tenté, en Argentine, de se référer au modèle des "learned professions" (médecins, avocats...). Le conseil apparaît dans cette analyse au coeur des transformations des modes de légitimation de cette profession. Après avoir rappelé le contexte du conseil agricole en Argentine, la première partie expose la méthode mise en oeuvre pour permettre aux intéressés eux-mêmes de produire des données sur leurs perceptions du métier. L'originalité porte ici notamment sur une analyse qui englobe conseil privé et conseil public. Une seconde partie expose les données empiriques produites par chacun des trois ateliers réflexifs conduits dans les trois zones agricoles de la région d'étude ; elle permet de mieux situer les enjeux du développement rural et agricole en Argentine à partir des discours des agents de développement. La conclusion analyse transversalement ces matériaux pour construire une vision du champ du conseil et du développement agricole et rural en Argentine. Une Argentine « discrète »… : repérage de nouvelles territorialités en région pampéenne à partir de parcours d’entrepreneurs issus de l’agriculture familiale. Le cas du district de Saavedra (Pigüé)

Dans cet article sont analysés trois parcours d’innovation de familles agricoles du district de Saavedra dans la Province de Buenos Aires afin de démontrer que, malgré un contexte très difficile pour l’agriculture familiale en Argentine, dans les années 1980 et surtout 1990, il existe un champ d’initiatives possibles pour ces familles. Ce sont des « cas exemplaires » qu’il s’agit d’interpréter dans les contextes sociaux et territoriaux particuliers qui leur donnent sens et qui interdisent de prescrire de simples imitations aux autres familles rurales. Leurs succès sont dus à des initiatives et des compétences singulières qui s’enracinent dans les histoires personnelles, dans le potentiel de travail et de possibilités d’un groupe familial et dans les caractéristiques sociales contingentes – positions sociales et réseaux – de chaque famille. L’innovation n’est pas un “événement” isolable de l’histoire longue d’une famille et de son contexte territorial. L’hypothèse élaborée dans cette recherche est celle de l’émergence, discrète, dans les espaces ruraux argentins d’un ensemble d’initiatives de ce type qui peuvent être mises en synergie entre elles et avec les agences de développement, notamment les nouveaux services de développement des municipalités.A discrete Argentina… Detecting new territorialities in the Pampa through the trajectories of innovators coming from family farming. The case of Saavedra district (Pigüé) In this paper, three courses of innovation of farm families from the district of Saavedra in the Buenos Aires province are analysed in order to demonstrate that, even in a very adverse context for family farming in Argentina, during the 1980’ and especially the 1990’, it does exist a potential for possible initiatives from these families. They are “telling cases” that have to be interpreted within their social and territorial particular contexts which give them sense and that prevent us from prescribing mere imitations to other rural families. Actually their success is due to singular initiatives and skills rooted in personal histories, in the potential of work and possibilities of a whole family group, and in particular social features – positions and social networks – of each family. Innovation is not an “event” that could be understood apart from the long history of a family and from their territorial context. The hypothesis elaborated in this research is that of the rise, discrete, in the rural areas of Argentina of a whole set of initiatives of this kind that could be interrelated with each other and with development agencies, particularly with the new district development services

Diversidad y coexistencia de modelos de desarrollo agropecuario y forestal : El desempeño profesional frente a nuevos escenarios

Se propone, de manera didáctica y aplicada, una clave de lectura de la complejización de los sectores agropecuarios y forestales en Argentina y, en consecuencia, de las formas de intervención de los/as ingenieros/as en este nuevo contexto. ¿Cómo la investigación puede generar innovación con equidad? Reflexiones grupales en pos de una construcción colectiva

N° ISBN - 978-2-7380-1284-5International audienceThere is no completely objective science nor impersonal research (Alemany y Sevilla Guzmán, 2009). All research and innovation are related to interests that aim to impose a certain world view (Bourdieu, 1990; Santos, 1995; Sormani, 1974). Nevertheless, the different ways under which scientific knowledge is produced may make it more or less available to the “other”. The way dialogue is established between science and indigenous and local knowledge may make research results more relevant from a social standpoint. To discuss this matter, we ask ourselves how researchers can effectively contribute to building a society more innovative and equitable. We mobilize the viewpoints of farmers, extension agents and researchers to try to figure out how they understand agricultural research, what do they expect from it and how they see their own role in it. Interviews made in south-east Buenos Aires province, Argentina, show a big gap between public agricultural research and extension and farmers' reality. It is mainly private business selling inputs and equipment which are close to farmers, filling their needs and transmiting to them agricultural innovations. To try to bridge the gap between farmers and public agricultural research and extension, it is essential to create mechanisms that facilitate a closer contact between the different actors, as well as to make research evaluation more sensitive to the production of knowledge that is relevant to farmers.
