Comunicación realizada en el congresoPink-coloured tomatoes are reputed as good flavoured and are very popular in local markets. Pink tomatoes show a transparent, colourless fruit cuticle in contrast to the naringenin-chalcone flavonoid-rich, orange-yellow cuticle of normal, red tomatoes due to the y (colourless epidermis) recessive mutation in MYB12 gene located in chromosome 1. In order to investigate the basis of the alleged higher quality of pink vs. red tomatoes and, especially, our previous observations of good flavour in hybrids between red and pink tomato varieties, two red x pink F1 crosses between pairs of tomato near-isogenic lines were obtained, namely ‘Ailsa Craig’ wt/wt x ‘Ailsa Craig’ y/y and ‘Ponderosa Red’ wt/wt x ‘Ponderosa Red’ y/y, being the latter a pink tomato line in which y allele was introgressed from its closely related ‘Ponderosa Pink’ cultivar. The parental lines and the two F1 hybrids were grown to harvest in a greenhouse and total soluble solids (°Brix) and titratable acidity (TA) were measured in red ripe fruits. While no differences for °Brix were observed between the parents of each cross, significantly higher °Brix was measured in the two red x pink F1’s compared to their corresponding parental lines. No clear differences between parental lines and F1 crosses were shown for TA. The experiment was repeated but including also the pink x red, reciprocal F1 crosses. The overdominance for °Brix but not for TA was confirmed in the red x pink hybrids while the pink x red hybrids produced °Brix values similar to those of their parents.Universidad de Málaga. The harmful effect of removing the extracellular vitrification medium during embryo cryopreservation using a nylon mesh device in rabbit

[EN] During the last decades, many techniques have been developed to reduce sample volume and improve cooling and warming rates during embryo vitrification. The vast majority are based on the "minimum drop size" concept, in which the vitrification solution around embryos is reduced by aspiration, leaving a tiny part of volume surrounding embryos. However, novel cryodevices were aimed to remove the entire vitrification solution. This study was designed to compare the "minimum drop size" technique using Cryotop (R) with the nylon mesh as cryodevice on rabbit morula embryos. The outcomes assessed were the in vitro development rates (experiment 1) and the offspring rates at birth (experiment 2). Embryos were vitrified in a two-step procedure; equilibrium (10% EG + 10% Me2SO) for 2 min and vitrification (20% EG + 20% Me2SO) for 1 min. In experiment 1, embryos (n = 323) were warmed and subsequently in vitro cultured for 48 h to assess the embryo developmental capability to reach the hatching-hatched blastocyst stage. In experiment 2, embryos were transferred using the laparoscopic technique (n = 369) to assess the offspring rate at birth. In this context, rates of in vitro embryo development were similar between vitrified groups (0.73 +/- 0.042% and 0.66 +/- 0.047% for Cryotop (R) and nylon mesh device, respectively), but lower than in the fresh group (0.97 +/- 0.016%, p 3.0.co;2-pNakashima, A., Ino, N., Kusumi, M., Ohgi, S., Ito, M., Horikawa, T., … Saito, H. A Model-Driven Approach for Business Process Management

    Get PDF
The Business Process Management is a common mechanism recommended by a high number of standards for the management of companies and organizations. In software companies this practice is every day more accepted and companies have to assume it, if they want to be competitive. However, the effective definition of these processes and mainly their maintenance and execution are not always easy tasks. This paper presents an approach based on the Model-Driven paradigm for Business Process Management in software companies. This solution offers a suitable mechanism that was implemented successfully in different companies with a tool case named NDTQ-Framework.Keywords/Index Terms: Model-Driven Web Engineering, Web Engineering, Web Development Methodologies, Business Process Managemen

Constraining the PG 1553+113 binary hypothesis: interpreting a new, 22-year period

PG 1553+113 is a well-known blazar exhibiting evidence of a  ⁣2.2\sim\! 2.2-year quasi-periodic oscillation in radio, optical, X-ray, and γ\gamma-ray bands. We present evidence of a new, longer oscillation of 21.8±4.721.8 \pm 4.7 years in its historical optical light curve covering 100 years of observation. On its own, this  ⁣22\sim\! 22-year period has a statistical significance of 1.9σ1.9\sigma when accounting for the look-elsewhere effect. However, the probability of both the 2.22.2- and 2222-year periods arising from noise is 0.02%\sim0.02\% (3.5σ3.5\sigma). The next peak of the 22-year oscillation should occur around July 2025. We find that the \sim\,10:1 relation between these two periods can arise in a plausible supermassive black hole binary model. Our interpretation of PG 1553+113's two periods suggests that the binary engine has a mass ratio 0.2\gtrsim 0.2, an eccentricity 0.1\lesssim 0.1, and accretes from a disk with characteristic aspect ratio 0.03\sim 0.03. The putative supermassive black hole binary radiates nHz gravitational waves, but the amplitude is 10100\sim10-100 times too low for detection by foreseeable pulsar timing arrays.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 tabl

Gamification is a methodology linked to active learning. Due to its impact in recent years in higher education, we believe it is necessary to analyse university students' perception of these methodologies. The aim of this work is the design and validation of an instrument that meets this need. A Likert scale questionnaire has been constructed in which different categories related to the teaching and learning process are addressed. The design and validation process has been as follows: first phase of validation by experts from different areas and universities; second phase of pilot test with 160 students to which an exploratory factor analysis was carried out, the results of which generated a process of adaptation and improvement of the construct with a third version after the analysis; third phase with a new exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 416 students. The results have made it possible to validate the questionnaire construct in terms of internal consistency and interrelation of its items and the detection of factors that mainly measure the degree of acceptance of the insertion of playful methodologies and the opinions of the students as opposed to elements of the traditional teaching model. The fourth phase was the application of a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to the most relevant categories, generating an instrument that is adapted to a theoretical model. The conclusions indicate that there is an inclination on the part of students to introduce playful strategies to complement more traditional elements in teaching

A single injection of corifollitropin alfa supplemented with human chorionic gonadotropin increases follicular recruitment and transferable embryos in the rabbit

[EN] Contents Superovulation protocols are designed to achieve maximum embryo yields. Nevertheless, ovarian response control and the quality of obtained embryos are still a challenge. On the other hand, to save the superovulated embryos until their subsequent use, it is usual to cryopreserve them, so it is also crucial to assess their cryotolerance. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of a single injection of corifollitropin alfa (FSH-CTP) alone or supplemented with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and to determine the impact of this stimulation on in vitro and in vivo development of fresh or devitrified embryos. Our outcomes showed that ovulation rate and recovered embryos were significantly increased when hCG was used. In vitro development of fresh and devitrified embryos and survival at birth were not significantly affected by superstimulation treatment. Results of this study suggest that a single injection of long-acting FSH-CTP supplemented with hCG can be effectively used in rabbits to elicit an increase in ovulation rate and number of recovered embryos. Furthermore, we demonstrated that hCG supplementation had no negative effects in embryo cryosurvival and development, showing similar survival rate at birth than FSH-CTP alone group. This research was supported by the Spanish Research project funded by Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MICINN) AGL2017¿85162¿C2¿1¿R and Generalitat Valenciana research pro¿ gram (Prometeo II 2014/036). Role of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase inhibitors after brain progression in platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer: a case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
IntroductionThe incidence of brain metastases in ovarian cancer is quite rare, being approximately 1%–2%. According to retrospective studies, patients with BRCA 1/2 mutations present a higher risk. The trimodal approach based on surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy presents better outcomes, but the prognosis remains poor with overall survival since the brain progression is around 1 year. Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) have provided a new alternative for the management of advanced ovarian cancer. The SOLO2, NOVA, and ARIEL3 clinical trials do not refer data on patients with brain metastases, and the published evidence for PARPi in this setting comes only from case reports and retrospective studies.Case reportWe present the case of a 54-year-old woman with stage IV ovarian high-grade serous papillary carcinoma who, after 37 months of treatment with olaparib, presented a single brain lesion. After radical treatment with surgery and adjuvant whole-brain radiotherapy, she resumed olaparib with no evidence of disease during 15 months. After a second single brain relapse treated with stereotactic radiosurgery, the patient continued olaparib beyond the brain progression with no evidence of extracranial disease. Despite that there were no changes in size or number of brain lesions, the neurological situation progressively worsened and the patient died 8 months after the second progression.DiscussionThe higher incidence of brain metastases of ovarian cancer points out a possible tropism for the CNS in BRCA-mutated patients. In preclinical studies, PARPi has shown to cross the blood–brain barrier, with possible antitumor activity in the central nervous system (CNS) while maintaining control of extracranial disease. The best survival data are obtained with a trimodal approach, and adding a PARPi could improve the survival outcomes in the context of platinum-sensitivity disease. Targeted therapies combined with local treatments are also used in other malignancies, suggesting potential effectiveness due to tumor heterogeneity. PARPi before brain metastasis may delay its diagnosis, and using iPARP after brain metastases could improve the outcome of this population.ConclusionThe role that PARPi may have in the treatment of brain metastases of ovarian cancer requires more studies. In the context of radical treatment of brain metastasis (surgery and/or RT), with no evidence of extracranial disease, maintaining treatment with PARPi beyond the brain progression should be considered

Multifaceted role of cycling DOF factor 3 (CDF3) in the regulation of flowering time and abiotic stress responses in Arabidopsis

[EN] DNA-binding with one finger (DOF)-type transcription factors are involved in many fundamental processes in higher plants, from responses to light and phytohormones to flowering time and seed maturation, but their relation with abiotic stress tolerance is largely unknown. Here, we identify the roles of CDF3, an Arabidopsis DOF gene in abiotic stress responses and developmental processes like flowering time. CDF3 is highly induced by drought, extreme temperatures and abscisic acid treatment. The CDF3 T-DNA insertion mutant cdf3-1 is much more sensitive to drought and low temperature stress, whereas CDF3 overexpression enhances the tolerance of transgenic plants to drought, cold and osmotic stress and promotes late flowering. Transcriptome analysis revealed that CDF3 regulates a set of genes involved in cellular osmoprotection and oxidative stress, including the stress tolerance transcription factors CBFs, DREB2A and ZAT12, which involve both gigantea-dependent and independent pathways. Consistently, metabolite profiling disclosed that the total amount of some protective metabolites including -aminobutyric acid, proline, glutamine and sucrose were higher in CDF3-overexpressing plants. Taken together, these results indicate that CDF3 plays a multifaceted role acting on both flowering time and abiotic stress tolerance, in part by controlling the CBF/DREB2A-CRT/DRE and ZAT10/12 modules. We thank Dr Pablo Gonzalez-Melendi and Dr Jan Zouhar for technical handling of the confocal microscope and Dr Rafael Catala for the assistance with the low temperature stress assays.
