Two simple, rapid, and useful spectrophotometric methods were suggest or the determination of sulphadimidine sodium (SDMS) with and without using cloud point extraction technique in pure form and pharmaceutical preparation. The first  method was based on  diazotization of the Sulphdimidine Sodium drug by sodium nitrite at 5 ºC, followed by coupling with α –Naphthol in basic medium to form an orange colored product . The product was stabilized and its absorption was measured at 473 nm. Beer’s law was obeyed in the concentration range of (1-12) μg∙ml-1. Sandell’s sensitivity was 0.03012 μg∙cm-1, the detection limit was 0.0277 μg∙ml-1, and the limit of Quantitation was 0.03605μg∙ml-1.The second method was the cloud point extraction (CPE) using Trtion X-114 as surfactant. Beer’s law was obeyed in the concentration range of (1-12) μg∙ml-1. Sandell’s sensitivity was 0.02958 μg∙cm-1, the detection limit was 0.01745 μg∙ml-1, and the limit of quantitation was 0.028303 μg∙ml-1. All variables including the reagent concentration, reaction time, color stability period, and mole ratio were studied in order to optimize the reaction conditions. The mole ratio for the composition of product is (1:1). Both methods were effectively useful to the determination of sulphdimidine sodium in pharmaceutical dose form.  The attained results were in a good agreement with the official and other methods in the literature .No interference were observed from the commonly encountered additives and excipients

Solids suspension in viscous Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids

Mechanically agitated solid mixing has been investigated for many years. A multitude of empirical correlations and theoretical models have been proposed in order to predict the minimum impeller speed, Njs, required for complete solids suspension. Hitherto, nearly all this research has focussed on low viscosity Newtonian liquids, typically water. This study has been concerned with extending the acquisition of solids suspension data into the transition and laminar regimes using both high viscosity Newtonian liquids as well as non-Newtonian as well as non-Newtonian liquids. The Newtonian liquids were mixtures of glycerol and water or corn syrup and water. Their viscosities varied from 0.022 to 11.35 Pas. The non-Newtonian liquids were made of aqueous solutions of Carbonyl Methyl Cellulose. These v/ere found to conform to a simple power-law rheology. The flow index, n, varied from 0.95 to 0.73, and the consistency index from 0.012 to 0.700. Suspension speed experiments were carried out in unbaffled, flat-bottomed tanks. Agitation was provided by a range of 45° pitch, six-bladed turbine impellers. Baffles, when used were found to hinder suspension. Solids distribution experiments were carried out in fully profiled vessels. A non-intrusive optical technique was used to sample local solids concentrations. By using such viscous liquids, it was found possible to suspend solids well within the laminar regime. Under such circumstances, those empirical and theoretical relationships derrived from turbulent conditions proved unsatisfactory for ether a prediction of Njs or an explaination of the solids suspension mechanism. Instead, an attempt has been made to explain the suspension mechanism, and hence to predict Njs using the mean liquid velocities found at close proximity to particles at the base of an agitated vessel. The Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids were found to have markedly different axial solids concentration profiles both form each other and as compared with water

COVID-19: An impetus to reform paediatrics curriculum for undergraduate medical students in Iraq

The beginning of COVID-19 infection in late 2019 in China and its global spread represent one of the stressful events of recent times. Apart from posing risks to the health, living, society, and economy, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated various aspects of medical education. In this article, we have highlighted the journey of paediatrics curricular reform in Iraq with a special emphasis on the need to reform in the era of the pandemic. The reform is essential to arm undergraduate medical students with the necessary competency to deliver adequate paediatric healthcare to the community should COVID-19 infection comes roaring back

Investigating the Reality of Using Quantitative Methods in Improving Decisions in a Sample of Public Industrial Sector Companies

Purpose: The research aims to verify whether or not the production and marketing managers in Iraqi public companies (research sample) use the contemporary quantitative methods (operations research). The present research draws the attention on these managers to explain their importance and impact in choosing the best decision alternatives that respond to environmental complexities (economic, social, technical, and even political) that took place after the events of 2003.   Theoretical Framework: The use of quantitative methods is seen as a criterion for the validity of decisions to be taken before implementation, which requires managers to think seriously about the importance and impact of these methods in reaching sound decisions, which raise economic efficiency and productivity, and improve the financial position of the company in its markets and among its competitors.   Design/Methodology: The research community consists of (3) general industrial companies, as a sample chosen by the researcher to represent the Iraqi industry. And because the research problem is one of the existing and chronic problems in the Iraqi industry, therefore, the time series of the research included length of the economic life of the three companies.   Findings: The results of the research showed that the industrial companies (the research sample) did not use quantitative methods in the past and in the present in decision-making processes, whether productive, marketing or other decisions, the researcher did not find any interest in the economic nature of the decisions taken. Therefore, we recommend attracting analysts and specialists in economics and management sciences to be a nucleus for the establishment of a central supporting unit that uses quantitative methods in the field of decision-making.   Research, Practical & Social Implications: The research dealt with the issue of using quantitative methods in a sample of public industrial sector companies, and clarified its important role in making more objective decisions of an economic nature that works to reduce the randomness of dealing with local markets, the cases of uncertainty, and the economic and social benefits that can be provided to the companies themselves. And for members of society and those who deal with it.   Originality/ Value: The originality of the research is embodied in the investigation of whether quantitative methods are used or not by organizing survey lists that were distributed to production and marketing managers in industrial companies (the research sample) to answer them, which is a precedent that has not occurred before in the Iraqi industry
