    Saving energy in aggressive intrusion detection through dynamic latency sensitivity recognition

    In an always connected world, cyber-attacks and computer security breaches can produce significant financial damages as well as introduce new risks and menaces in everyday's life. As a consequence, more and more sophisticated packet screening/filtering solutions are deployed everywhere, typically on network border devices, in order to sanitize Internet traffic. Despite the obvious benefits associated to the proactive detection of security threats, these devices, by performing deep packet inspection and inline analysis, may both affect latency-sensitive traffic introducing non-negligible delays, and increase the energy demand at the network element level. Starting from these considerations, we present a selective routing and intrusion detection technique based on dynamic statistical analysis. Our technique separates latency-sensitive traffic from latency-insensitive one and adaptively organizes the intrusion detection activities over multiple nodes. This allows suppressing directly at the network ingress, when possible, all the undesired components of latency-insensitive traffic and distributing on the innermost nodes the security check for latency sensitive flows, prioritizing routing activities over security scanning ones. Our final goal is demonstrating that selective intrusion detection can result in significant energy savings without adversely affecting latency-sensitive traffic by introducing unacceptable processing delays. \ua9 2017 Elsevier Ltd

    Preoperative imaging in third molar surgery - A prospective comparison of X-ray-based and radiation-free magnetic resonance orthopantomography

    This study aimed to compare preoperative data relevant to third molar surgery based on radiographic orthopantomography (OPG) and orthopantomogram-like MR images (MR-OPG), using five different MR protocols. X-ray-based OPG and OPG-like MRI reconstructions from DESS, SPACE-STIR, SPACE-SPAIR, T1-VIBE-Dixon, and UTE sequences were acquired in 11 patients undergoing third molar surgery, using a 15-channel mandibular coil. Qualitative (image quality, susceptibility to artifacts, positional relationship, contact/non-contact of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), relationship to maxillary sinus, IAN continuity, root morphology) and quantitative (tooth length, retromolar distance, distance to the IAN, and distance to the mandible margin) parameters of the maxillary and mandibular third molars were assessed regarding inter-reader agreement and quantitative discrepancies by three calibrated readers. Radiation-free MR-OPGs generated within clinically tolerable acquisition times, which exhibited high image quality and low susceptibility to artifacts, showed no significant differences compared with X-ray-based OPGs regarding the assessment of quantitative parameters. UTE MR-OPGs provided radiographic-like images and were best suited for assessing qualitative preoperative data (positional relationship, nerve contact/non-contact, and dental root morphology) relevant to third molar surgery. For continuous and focal nerve imaging, DESS MR-OPG was superior. MR-OPGs could represent a shift towards indication-specific and modality-oriented perioperative imaging in high-risk oral and maxillofacial surgery

    Enhancing consumers' self-reported loyalty intentions in Islamic Banks: the relationship between service quality and the mediating role of customer satisfaction

    The main objective of this paper is to investigate how service quality and customer satisfaction are correlated to self-reported loyalty intentions in Islamic banks. The paper presents primary data collected by self-administered questionnaires involving a sample of 655 respondents from all local Islamic Banks in Jordan. The results show that compliance, tangibility, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy positively linked to self-reported loyalty intentions, with compliance and assurance appearing as the greatest correlation with self-reported loyalty intentions compared to other service quality dimensions. Islamic banks should focus on continuous improvement of service quality due to the direct correlation with customer satisfaction and loyalty. It is important for Islamic banks to review and endorse all policies and procedures to ensure that their documents and investments are undertaken in line with the requirements of Islamic law. Managers should pay special attention to the service quality provided by their employees and develop their skill set through training and education programmes based on Islamic principles. As the first study of its kind in Jordan, the paper’s contribution stems from filling the research gap in examining the relationship between the various service quality dimensions and self-reported loyalty intentions in Islamic banks using the CARTER model.     Stylolite in Upper Cretaceous Carbonate Reservoirs from Northwestern Iraq

    Stylolites are commonly observed in the carbonate reservoirs in various oilfield of Iraq including those of upper Cretaceous successions from northwestern Iraq, where they are characterized by stylolite-rich zones in the Cenomanian-early Turonian Gir Bir Formation and to a lesser extent in the Turonian-Santonian Wajna and early Campanian Mushorah formations respectively. The observed stylolites are either large to be identified in the core samples or smaller ones that are well observed in the thin sections and are characterized by variations in amplitude, morphology and accumulated insoluble residues. The recorded stylolites are classified as hummocky, irregular, low and high-amplitudes peaks, and irregular anastomosing stylolites. Stylolites affect the porosity permeability and thickness reduction compaction as the main chemical compaction (pressure solution) that reduce porosity. Whereas, in other places, the stylolites act as seals and stop the upward movement of hydrocarbons. This is also seen for mineralization processes such as silicification that ended near the stylolite surfaces

    Imaging in Third Molar Surgery: A Clinical Update

    Third molar surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Considering the patient's young age and the often-elective nature of the procedure, a comprehensive preoperative evaluation of the surgical site, relying heavily on preoperative imaging, is key to providing accurate diagnostic work-up, evidence-based clinical decision making, and, when appropriate, indication-specific surgical planning. Given the rapid developments of dental imaging in the field, the aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date clinical overview of various imaging techniques related to perioperative imaging in third molar surgery, ranging from panoramic radiography to emerging technologies, such as photon-counting computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Each modality's advantages, limitations, and recent improvements are evaluated, highlighting their role in treatment planning, complication prevention, and postoperative follow-ups. The integration of recent technological advances, including artificial intelligence and machine learning in biomedical imaging, coupled with a thorough preoperative clinical evaluation, marks another step towards personalized dentistry in high-risk third molar surgery. This approach enables minimally invasive surgical approaches while reducing inefficiencies and risks by incorporating additional imaging modality- and patient-specific parameters, potentially facilitating and improving patient management

    Posttraumatic stress disorder predicts poor health-related quality of life in cardiac patients in Palestine

    BACKGROUND: The longitudinal association of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with health-related quality of life (HRQL) in cardiac patients' remains poorly studied, particularly in conflict-affected settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this cohort study, we used baseline and one-year follow-up data collected from patients 30 to 80 years old consecutively admitted with a cardiac diagnosis to four major hospitals in Nablus, Palestine. All subjects were screened for PTSD and HRQL using the PTSD Checklist Specific and the HeartQoL questionnaire. We used a generalized structural equation model (GSEM) to examine the independent predictive association of PTSD at baseline with HRQL at follow-up. We also examined the mediating roles of depression, anxiety, and stress at baseline. RESULTS: The prevalence of moderate-to-high PTSD symptoms among 1022 patients at baseline was 27∙0%. Patients with PTSD symptoms reported an approximate 20∙0% lower HRQL at follow-up. The PTSD and HRQL relationship was largely mediated by depressive and anxiety symptoms. It was not materially altered by adjustment for socio-demographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors. DISCUSSION: Our findings suggest that individuals with a combination of PTSD and depression, or anxiety are potentially faced with poor HRQL as a longer-term outcome of their cardiac disease. In Palestine, psychological disorders are often stigmatized; however, integration of mental health care with cardiac care may offer an entry door for addressing psychological problems in the population. Further studies need to assess the effective mental health interventions for improving quality of life in cardiac patients

    Common Forms of Communication Among Teachers of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Jerusalem Schools, and the Challenges They Face

    The study aimed at examining the forms of communication used by teachers with students of autism spectrum disorder in Jerusalem, as well as identifying the challenges that teachers face in communicating with these students. The researchers relied on the questionnaire as a research tool, and they used the descriptive correlative approach as a method for the study. The study sample included (97) male and female teachers in kindergartens and schools on the autism spectrum, and the researchers concluded several results, the most important of which are: the arithmetic average of the field of verbal communication reached (3.89) with a percentage of (77.9) and a high value, and the arithmetic average of the field of non-verbal communication was (3.41) with a percentage of (68.3) with a high value. The arithmetic average of the field of challenges of communicating with the autistic child faced by teachers was (0.80) with a percentage of (80.5) with a high value. The results also showed that there were no differences in the responses of the study sample between the average responses of teachers to common forms of communication with children on the autism spectrum according to the variables of (gender, the level of educational qualification), and there were differences in the responses of the study sample according to the variables of (years of experience of 5 years to less than 10 years and the age of the younger age group of the sample from 21 to 30). Also, there were no differences in the responses of the study sample between the average responses of teachers to the challenges they face with children on the autism spectrum due to the variables of (gender, level of educational qualification, age), and were our differences in the responses of the study sample to the variable of (years of experience of 5 years to less than 10 years). The two researchers reached several recommendations, the most important of which are: increasing the awareness of educators on the importance of communication programs such as the Lovaz program, and working on training teachers on how to use programs that work on communicating with children with autism

    Effect of Extraction Method and Solvent Power on Polyphenol and Flavonoid Levels in Hyphaene Thebaica L Mart (Arecaceae) (Doum) Fruit, and its Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities

    Purpose: To evaluate the influence of extraction method and solvent type on extractable polyphenols and flavonoids in Doum Hyphaene Thebaica L. Mart. (Arecaceae) fruit, as well as to examine the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the fruit extracts.Methods: The extraction procedures were performed separately in an ultrasonic bath or shaking water bath for 30 min (70 °C for ethanol and 60 °C for methanol) at agitation speed of 50 Hz and 70 rpm, respectively. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was investigated using ù-carotene bleaching, 2,2- diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power ability assays. In vitro antibacterial activity of the extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi was assessed using agar disc diffusion assay.Results: Total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), as well as antioxidant capacity were maximized using methanol as the extraction solvent, particularly with the ultrasonic method. The half  maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of the methanol/ultrasonic (MU), methanol/water bath (MW), ethanol/ultrasonic (EU), and   ethanol/water bath (EW) extracts in the DPPH assay were 107.6 126.7, 172.7, and 196.3 Ïg/mL, respectively. The extracts showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi, while MU extract inhibited the growth of all pathogenic bacteria used in this study.Conclusion: The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Doum fruit extracts are significantly affected by the type of extracting solvent and equipment used.     A Novel High Frequency Encoding Algorithm for Image Compression

    In this paper a new method for image compression is proposed whose quality is demonstrated through accurate 3D reconstruction from 2D images. The method is based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) together with a high frequency minimization encoding algorithm at compression stage and a new concurrent binary search algorithm at decompression stage. The proposed compression method consists of five main steps: (1) Divide the image into blocks and apply DCT to each block; (2) Apply a high frequency minimization method to the AC-coefficients reducing each block by 2/3 resulting in a Minimized Array; (3) Build a look up table of probability data to enable the recovery of the original high frequencies at decompression stage; (4) Apply a delta or differential operator to the list of DC-components; and (5) Apply arithmetic encoding to the outputs of steps (2) and (4). At decompression stage, the look up table and the concurrent binary search algorithm are used to reconstruct all high frequency AC-coefficients while the DC-components are decoded by reversing the arithmetic coding. Finally, the inverse DCT recovers the original image. We tested the technique by compressing and decompressing 2D images including images with structured light patterns for 3D reconstruction. The technique is compared with JPEG and JPEG2000 through 2D and 3D RMSE. Results demonstrate that the proposed compression method is perceptually superior to JPEG with equivalent quality to JPEG2000. Concerning 3D surface reconstruction from images, it is demonstrated that the proposed method is superior to both JPEG and JPEG2000
