Ezgi Akpınar (MEF Author)##nofulltext##Word of mouth is one of the main drivers that shapes consumers’ decisions. With the advent of social media, consumer reviews, opinions about brands propagate ata higher spread and reach masses. Thus, giving the rising interest in word of mouth, many brands are interested in understanding what makes consumers talk favorablyabout their products. Existing research suggests that one of the psychologicalmotivations to engage in positive word of mouth is self-enhancement. Consumers liketo provide positive information, which makes them look good to others. Yet, it is not somuch known how self-enhancement affects sharing. Do consumers also provide positiverecommendations when they already feel good about themselves? Our research showsthat self enhancement boosts the likelihood of giving positive recommendations. Yet,this pattern does not always hold and can be moderated with regulatory focus. We showthat when consumers are under high prevention focus, higher self-enhancement, in fact, decreases the likelihood of giving positive recommendations. This framework shedlights on how companies can encourage positive word of mouth, by understanding selfenhancement and regulatory focus mechanisms.TR - Dizi

The measurement of serum TNF-α levels in patients with lichen planus

Background: Lichen planus is a common mucocutaneous inflammatory skin disease with a multifactorial etiology. Cytokines playa key role in lichen planus pathogenesis. This study investigates the relationship between disease severity and levels of tumornecrosis factor-? (TNF-?), which is considered a primary cytokine that initiates cytotoxicity.Material and methods: Serum TNF-? levels were compared between a patient group (n = 34) and a control group (n = 20). TNF-?serum levels were measured using human TNF-? Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test kits, and the two groups werestatistically compared to each other. Results: Mean serum TNF-? levels were found to be significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group (p 0.005). No relationshipwas detected between TNF-? levels and patients’ sex. Conclusion: It is thought that TNF-?, a proinflammatory cytokine, may play an important role in the pathogenesis of lichen planus.TNF-? may be a simple and effective predictor to illustrate the inflammatory status in patients with lichen planus

Effect of the presence of pneumonia on noninvasive ventilation success in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cases with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure

Aim: To investigate the effect of the presence of pneumonia on the success of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases with acute respiratory failure. Materials and methods: Sixty patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to COPD exacerbation were included. The patients were divided into 2 groups as those with pneumonia (Group 1) and without pneumonia (Group 2). According to initial pH values, cases were also divided into 3 subgroups based on pH values. C-reactive protein (CRP), APACHE II scores, requirement of endotracheal intubation, mortality, and duration of ICU and hospital stay were also recorded. Results: NIMV success was found to be 85.5% in Group 1 and 51.1% in Group 2. Endotracheal intubation rates were higher in Group 2 (P = 0.008). NIMV failure was 70.1% in Group 2 and 10% in Group 1 in patients with severe acidosis. The APACHE II scores and CRP levels were significantly higher and independent risk factors in patients with NIMV failure (P < 0.002, P < 0.001). A significant difference was not found between groups in terms of duration of hospital and ICU stays and mortality. Conclusion: The presence of pneumonia in COPD cases is a factor that reduces NIMV success, but this does not affect mortality and the duration of ICU and hospital stay

Contribution of the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) systems to the road safety: A scenario-based comparative evaluation

17th International Conference of Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies: Transportation and Logistics Management, HKSTS 2012; Kowloon; Hong Kong; 15 December 2012 through 17 December 2012Though the number of "real ground" PRT projects are few, it can be possible to deduce some hypothetical safety conclusions. For the very optimist assumption that the control algorithms will only "allow" them to operate in non-collision mode on the network, the safety figures are re-evaluated for two urban settings: First (1) is the case where the urban design was fully recreated based on PRT system. The other (2) is the hypothetical PRT system would be embedded into the existing transportation system. The two cases of the safety measures and cost figures are compared to evaluate the opportunities and pitfalls by the application of a PRT system via the scenario analysis. By doing so, after description of the present situation, there comes the construction of possible alternative futures to compare with the present one. It can be deduced that, even if the safety figures of PRT system are hypothetical, PRT-based urban environments promise a lot in terms of safety levels (as far as 80 per cent) with, however, the expense of financial burden for the local government. Yet, for low-cost solution, PRT-embedded urban environments also provide promising results compared to "doing nothing" as far as 30 per cent reductions, in accidents in total and 44 per cent in deaths

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of web-based instruction with web-based instructional material, which covers“Matter and Heat” unit on 6th grade Science and Technology Course Workbook, on students’ academic achievement. Nonequivalent control group, which is a model of Quasi-experimental method, was used in the study. The research was conducted with 102 sixth grade students attending two different primary schools in Artvin in spring semester of the 2010-2011 school years. As data collection tools, “Matter and Heat” unit achievement test was administered in two schools as pre-tests and post-tests and open-ended questions were used after implementation. Between the experimental and the control group students’ post- test scores, significant differences were found in favor of the experimental group in which web-based instruction was used.
