Following our previous fi ndings on the in vitro anthelmintic effect of camel milk on Haemonchus contortus, the current study aimed at investigating its in vivo effect. Investigations were carried out using mice infected with Heligmosomoides polygyrus which is a parasite commonly used to test the effi cacy of anthelmintics. Thirty six Swiss white mice of both sexes aged 5 – 6 weeks old, and weighing between 20 and 25 g were orally infected with 0.5 ml dose of 100, 1-week-old H. polygyrus infective larvae (L3 ). After the pre-patent period, infected animals were randomly divided into 6 groups of 6 animals each. The nematicidal effi cacy of camel milk was monitored through faecal egg count reduction (FECR) and total worm count reduction (TWCR). Four doses (8.25; 16.5; 33.0; 66.0 ml/kg body weight (bw)) for fresh camel milk and 22 mg/kg bw for albendazole were studied using a bioassay. Albendazole and 4 % dimethylsulfoxide were included in the protocol as reference drug and placebo, respectively. For all tested doses except 8.25 ml/kg bw, camel milk was effective in vivo against H. polygyrus reducing both faecal egg count and worm count (p < 0.05). The dose 66 ml/kg bw showed the highest nematicidal activity causing a 76.75 % FECR and a 69.62 % TWCR 7 day after initiating the treatment. These results support the possible use of camel milk in the control of gastro-intestinal helminthiasis

During the Winter Quarter of 2020, three Architectural Engineering students investigated a new type of timber product, dowel laminated timber, for their senior project. Dowel laminated timber (DLT) is a specialty product typically associated with sustainable design and is a form of mass timber. The three students had little knowledge about mass timber outside of a timber design course; their knowledge was primarily in wood framing design. Therefore, the topic was chosen because dowel laminated timber is a topic that holds a large learning opportunity not only for the students but also for the profession. The purpose of the senior project was to investigate dowel laminated timber through fabricating specimens, analyze the performance of the specimens, and improve professional standards

Tumors of the salivary gland are rare, arising predominantly in the parotid gland. They display great pathomorphological variation. Clinically, this tumors manifest, often, as nonspecific parotid masses. Histopathological examination of the tumor specimens\' shows that benign tumors are more frequent, dominated by the pleomorphic adenoma. Treatment of these tumors is mostly surgical. However, facial nerve paralysis remains the main complication of parotid surgery. This study was a retrospective analysis of 43 cases of parotid tumors. Epidemical, clinical, radiological and histological features were studied. Keywords: Tumors, salivary gland, parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma, benign tumors, surgery, facial nerve paralysis. The effects of long-term fertilizations on soil hydraulic properties vary with scales

Soil structural alterations instigated by cropping system conversion and fertilization change have been well documented, but how such alterations vary with scale remains elusive. We investigated this based on the Rothamsted long-term wheat experiment (since 1843) in the UK. Triplicate cores 7cm high and 10cm in diameter were taken from plots that have been under different fertilizations and returned to natural woodland for more than one century for imaging with X-ray computed tomography at resolution of 40µm. We then broke each core and sampled three aggregates from it to scan them at resolution of 1.5µm. For each core or aggregate sample, we calculated its pore size distribution, as well as permeability and tortuosity from pore-scale simulations. The results showed that the fertilization change more than 170 years ago reshaped the soil structure but differently between the core scale and aggregate scale. Macro-porosity of the pores (>40µm) in the cores unfertilized or fertilized with inorganic fertilizers were low and poorly connected in the top 10cm of soil, compared to the cores given farmyard manure or in the woodland. In all treatments, the large macropores in the cores were hydraulically anisotropic with their permeability being higher in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction, whereas the aggregates were comparatively isotropic. The fertilization affected porosity and permeability of macropores at core scale more significantly than those at aggregate scale, and the aggregates fertilized with farmyard manure and in the woodland were more permeable than aggregates in other treatments. It is also found that, compared to no-fertilization or fertilization with complete fertilizers, fertilizing without phosphorus over the past 20 years increased the porosity and permeability of the aggregates but not of the cores. Fertilization with inorganic fertilizers increased tortuosity of the macropores in the cores but not of the intra-aggregates micropores, compared to no-fertilization. Porosity-permeability relationship for aggregates unfertilized or fertilized with inorganic fertilisers follows a power law with R2 > 0.8. In contrast, the permeability of aggregates in farmyard manure and in the woodland trended differently with the porosity. Aggregates and cores responded differently to carbon in that, with soil carbon increasing, the permeability of the aggregates increased asymptotically while the permeability of the cores increased approximately exponentially. Since soil structure is indicators of soil quality and evolves slowly, our results have important implications for understanding how agronomical practice changes reshape soil structure at different scales as well as the long-term consequence for hydrological and biochemical processes

Objective : the Necrotizing (malignant) External Otitis is a very serious, potentially lethal affection. It touches exclusively a debilitated population, where from the necessity of a premature and reliable diagnosis for a beam of cliniquo-biological, radiological and isotopic arguments. Its care as well as its treatment are heavy and require a better definition of themoment of cure. The purpose of our work is to specify the place of the isotopic explorations in the care of the NEO.Materials and methods : we report a retrospective study bringing together 29 patients hospitalized for suspicion of necrotizing external otitis of period going from 2003 till 2009.RĂ©sultats : the Middle Age of our population is 64.2 years, with a clear male prevalence. The majority of our patients are diabetics (90% of the cases) with a cardiac and hypertensive Co-morbidity among 19 patients. All our patients consulted, within 47 average days. An assessment of imagery was carried out, comprising a scanner for 16 of our patients. It wasnormal in 4 cases and had shown lesions of osteitis in 12 cases. The osseous scintigraphy marked in MDP-Tc99 was carried out among 24 patients, within 9.69 average day. It was positive for all our patients, objectifying an osseous hyperfixation. All our patients received an adapted treatment. After amendment of the clinico-biological signs, a scintigraphy in Ga67 was practiced for 16 patients within 74 average days. It confirmed the cure among 12 patients, at which one decided to stop the antibiotic therapy. In the other cases, it objectified an osseous hyperfixation translating the persistence of the active infectious process, from where prolongation of the treatment. Conclusion : it comes out from our work that the imagery is essential to confirm the diagnosis and to specify the extent of the osteitis. Indeed, the scanner and the MRI offer an excellent resolution and evaluate the extension of the infection perfectly. However, because of their poor sensitivity, they have little interest to the early phase of the diagnosis and for the therapeutic follow-up. The osseous scintigraphy has the advantage of an excellent sensitivity, approximately 100% in particular at the early stage, but is not specific. The tomographic techniques (SPECT) and the quantification improve however its specificity. The scintigraphy with gallium 67 seems quite as sensitive as and more specific than the osseousscintigraphy, especially if it is quantified, and appears essential with the therapeutic follow-up. Its standardization would have an excellent predictive value of cure, allowing the stop of the antibiotic therapyKeywords : Necrotizing External Otitis, scintigraphy with gallium, the osseous scintigraphy

Investigation of CuIn1-xGaxSe2 thin films co-evaporated from two metal sources for photovoltaic solar cells

    Get PDF
CuIn1-xGaxSe2 (CIGS) thin films were grown by co-evaporation using two sources for the metal elements (Cu, Ga and In). A Mo coated soda lime glass substrates heated at 500 °C was used for the deposition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirm that these films are polycrystalline with a chalcopyrite structure and showed homogeneous grain size estimate about 25 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to analyse the binding energy values of Ga3d and O1s onto CIGSe layers. The conductivity measurements in the temperature range of 40-400 K were carried out for 0.05≤ x ≤ 0.23. The effect of grain boundary scattering on the electrical transport played an important role in describing the transport processes in these films. The bowing factor is discussed taking into account the deposition techniques of CIGS films. It has been noticed that the open circuit voltage (Voc) is influenced by Ga content and the energy gap value of the absorber CIGS thin layers and yielded a poor efficiency of solar cells
